Street interviews, listener call-ins, vinyl gluttery, sporadic normalcy, original floperas and fiktion, blatant talking over songs, politix, tenderness, and a vague undercurrent of angst. Right up your alley!

Options January 10, 2013: That Dirty Clown - a 1992 Popera by Clay Pigeon

Listen to this show:  Pop‑up player!

Approx. start time
That Dirty Clown is a popera that I wrote circa 1992, when I lived in Florida. It was originally released in an edition of 200 cassettes. It was recorded on a 4-track cassette machine. Vocals are tape manipulated. I appreciate your nice comments about this project. Hard to believe it's 21-years old. Always remember. CP

  6:11pm david:

Amazing that this is from '92 - really shows the timelessness of what Clay does.

  6:12pm dale:

YAY! my wife bought three or four copies of that dirty clown for gifts. think you played this first in 2006 on fmu (?) right up there with phantom of the paradise
Avatar 6:12pm kat330:

I've noticed amEdeo plays tracks from this most every show. Mollusk!
  6:13pm Carmichael:

Clay! Send in the dirty clowns!
  6:13pm Nate:

This quitting smoking thing has brought out the creative and abstract in you CP! I like this new direction!
  6:13pm sFrances:

holy s*&t, this just keeps better & bonkersy better.
i feel like swearing a blue streak, this is so awesome.
(Hi Kat330!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm G:

People are still commenting (on this show, it seems) on Fabio's board, because it's often left open afterwards...
  6:14pm blee:

Oh crap, she's gotta dirty clown baby!
  6:14pm Carmichael:

Did you quit the nicotine, Clay?? Good for you!
Avatar 6:14pm kat330:

Your inception for this opera coincides about exactly with amEdeo's CONception -- so makes sense. :)
  6:15pm dale:

up and down like a rusty roller coaster - gold, GOLD i tells ya!
  6:15pm blee:

@G - even Clay is commenting on this board. : )
Avatar 6:15pm Philo Gristle:

Sounded like the Eraserhead baby.
  6:17pm oddly gone:

This pop opera secretes a delightfully cloying vibe. I recommend it with the mushy peas and gravy. Bravissimo, Maestro Pigeon!
  6:17pm sFrances:

coincidentally: i've been rewatching the entire Twin Peaks series this week....

I luuuuuuuuuuuuuuv this.
Avatar 6:17pm Pennywise:

Want a balloon?
  6:18pm Maxim Goose:

i said it on Fabio's comments board-- something like.. "hey- you're playing the dirty clown album-- good plan!"
  6:18pm dinatekno:

Holy crap! This is fantastic! Dirty clown - somehow, I picture X.Ray Burns in his best Juggalo cape - laughing...
Avatar 6:18pm Philo Gristle:

@sFrances Does it still hold up? The first season was a big deal when it came out, loved it.
  6:19pm steve:

Clay i just posted on the other board not realizing it had changed. to reiterate: this is blowing my mind with its surreal, creepy dreamyness
  6:20pm Maxim Goose:

oh and also --this "one of these tracks can be found with other weird and wonderful things on the compilation album "the vanity case reality tunnel volume two.. the carnival is over"-- just thought i'd say "
that dirty clown is one of my all time favourite albums-- just thought i'd say that too
  6:21pm Danne D:

Can't understand why some people are afraid of clowns....nope can't understand it all....

  6:21pm Candy Colored Clown:

"I'll f#@! anything that moves"
  6:22pm sFrances:

@Philo: totally still holds up. I've been laughing and cringing at the same spots I did when it originally aired. And discovering some new layers of perception too. I worked at a bookstore when it came out, so I got the Laura Palmer diary, the Fodors type tourist guide to the town of Twin Peaks as well as the Agent Cooper cassettes.
  6:22pm david:

<Dusty Show "Yes!" sample>
  6:22pm Nate:

How many takes was this, CP? I wish I could get into your awesomely creative arc on this. I'm fascinated!

Avatar 6:25pm Clay:

Thanks for your nice comments. This was recorded on a cassette 4-track deck. Pretty lo-fi. Weird to hear this after twenty-years. Crappier than I remember! 2/22
  6:25pm other david:

Genius, Clay :)
  6:25pm TImb:

Hi Clay, listening from Fort Lauderdale. I love "Dirty Clown"! My friend lent me the CD a few months ago. Thanks for playing this today. Hope all is well.
  6:26pm Nate:

@kat330 gotta be a Scorpio
  6:26pm dale:

the clown car horn interjections get me every time
  6:26pm Danne D:

I want cake now :(
  6:26pm Tugboat:

Tugboat Checkin in from the harbor.
Avatar 6:26pm Philo Gristle:

@sFrances I remember there was even a magazine dedicated to the mysteries of the show, Wrapped In Plastic, which I remember purchasing a few copies of. I think they did 30-40 issues of it total. I wasn't *that* into it, and my interest petered out by the time the second season was halfway through..... but it'd be interesting to see again.
  6:26pm sFrances:

this does not sound crappy at all, Clay!
quick kicking yourself, even floppy clown shoes can bruise. ;)
Avatar 6:26pm kat330:

Thanks, Mr. Pigeon (I presume those #'s were answering my ?) !
  6:27pm kata:

oops, I was still hangin out on Fabio's playlist. I dig this Clay ! very enjoyable.
  6:27pm moose:

gee i just got here- i think i'll have to step out of the playlist and away from the sound and listen to the archive-now time for a 'jazz cigarette!'
  6:27pm Cory:

if it sucks can I have a copy?
Avatar 6:27pm kat330:

@Nate: Not asking for his sign. I have a more nefarious purpose. ;)
Avatar 6:27pm Clay:

  6:29pm sFrances:

@Philo: today I came upon a car wrapped in plastic (& aluminum foil). Am working on the photos of it now. & yeah, by season2 you totally see Mark Frost's more supernatural influence & with David Duchovney in drag, it's interesting to see it as a precursor to X Files.
I realized rewatching TP that it was where my interest in taxidermy began and now I have some of my own...(I also ended up moving to the PacNW/Portland,OR for 8 years)
  6:29pm moose:

(just cause i misted so much)
Avatar 6:30pm kat330:

This really is making me think back to seeing Killer Joe last week -- the family "dynamics."
  6:31pm david:

Abbey Road-quality, these tape speed adjustments.
  6:31pm Danne D:

The way to a Dirty Clown's heart is through his stomach
  6:31pm sFrances:

this also has a really nice Residents circa Demons Dance Alone vibe to it.
Avatar 6:32pm kat330:

@Danne: KFC?
  6:32pm Bears On Trikes:

Fuck a bunch of clowns.
  6:33pm Nate:

@Danne D: LMFAO!
Avatar 6:33pm Philo Gristle:

@sFrances ha! Hope you post links when you get them done. While I loved early X-Files, it lost its way trying to explain the mysteries. Twin Peaks just piled them on.
  6:33pm Maxim Goose:

not crappy
it's a kind of beautiful, melancholy piece i reckon
and also fucked
  6:34pm Carmichael:

When Josie turned into a drawer knob, I was done. I think the show finally jumped the shark when Leo went drooly.
  6:35pm glenn:

oh hey, another shooting at an american school. http://news.nationalpost.com/2013/01/10/one-person-wounded-after-student-armed-with-shotgun-opens-fire-in-california-school/
  6:35pm Nate:

Nice vibrato CP!
  6:35pm dutty clown:

this is beautiful!!!
  6:35pm blee:

This is a quality popera. The voice effects are kinda Ween, too.
  6:36pm dale:

thhis is the part where my wife and i do spit takes.
  6:36pm steve:

oh my god she had his baby!
Avatar 6:36pm kat330:

It was so hard to get an idea of the whole work -- the gestalt of TDC -- from hearing only isolated tracks on amEdeo's archives. It is really effective, Clay.
  6:36pm dinatekno:

The imagery this recording is stirring up in my brain is frekin twisted and scary - THANKS Clay! I love this!
  6:37pm sFrances:

@Philo, will try to get one shot up before the show is over!
& so true David about the tape speed switching quality .
this is stunning.

  6:39pm Danne D:

Dirty Clown Jr. was ahead of his time by 20 years. Today he'd have a show on The Learning Channel

A havin' my baby. What a wonderful way of saying how much ya love me ....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm G:

  6:44pm dale:

aww poor lil bastard.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm Matt from Springfield:

I also see some listeners were still on the Fabio side - only fitting for such a crazy Popera concept!
Avatar 6:44pm kat330:

@Brainiac: Well, thanks for that edification and cheers! [it's ChrissIE btw]
  6:44pm Danne D:

Poor Dirty Clown Jr :(
  6:45pm InBrkly:

I feel like I should tune out now and set aside time to listen to this from the beginning.
Avatar 6:45pm Philo Gristle:

Yikes, Matt! Must be a first!
  6:45pm Nate:

CP? What do think of the collaboration or duel w/ Hearty White? It was brought up last week on the PL. . .
Avatar 6:45pm kat330:

Haven't seen Les Miz or the current film, but surely this gives it a run for its money.

  6:49pm dale:

no people's choice nomination for this? how do we make that happen next year?
  6:50pm Danne D:

She didn't make very good life choices, I have to say.
Avatar 6:50pm Philo Gristle:

Thanks, sFrances! How appropriate a syncronicity!
  6:51pm Maxim Goose:

time for a re-release?....
Avatar 6:51pm kat330:

@dinatekno: Yeah, kinda justifies my iatrophobia. More people fear clowns, but I fear doctors.
  6:52pm dale:

ooh, this part is going on the mixtape to be played at my funeral.
  6:53pm Nate:

Another masterpiece! I'm not sure what I enjoyed more, though. . .The "Accuplaylist" or your performance! Bravo playlisters! Bravo CP!
