Street interviews, listener call-ins, vinyl gluttery, sporadic normalcy, original floperas and fiktion, blatant talking over songs, politix, tenderness, and a vague undercurrent of angst. Right up your alley!

This episode was assembled hastily before my wife and I left on a long-anticipated trip to Paris. I want to thank Ken and Julie for filling in for me in my absence, and on short-notice, to boot! As often happens when I am not there to make tiny adjustments in the control room, my voice is sped-up to near chipmunk status as the WFMU cassette player and my home unit seem to operate at different speeds. Usually I slow my tape dwon a little to compensate, but, I was in France and so ... Alvinism occurs. My voice is already at Jackie Stewart levels of highness, so further emascualtion is hard for me to handle. That said ... let's get on with it.

That's it for another episode of TDS. I hope you enjoyed it. As I mentioned before, this show was assembled rather hastily as my wife and I prepared to travel.

Thanks to Ken and Julie for filling-in and saving the day. I'm glad I didn't have to play a re-run!

Don't forget ... October 11th - Thurs - 3-7pm - DUEL III between Fabio and Clay Pigeon. Should be Fun!

I also want to mention the Silent Fundraiser happening now on FMU. As I write this, I have only made 11% of my goal and that's not too good. Thanks to those of you who have pledged! I hope that if you haven't, and you enjoy this program, that you might be able to make a pledge to The Dusty Show and FMU.

Well, I guess that's about it. Remember to email me when you can. It's always great to get email from listeners and to know you are out there. Especially if you have never gotten in touch before (though, you are always welcome whomever you are!).

.Until next time, take care, enjoy the fall, and ... always remember!

Listener comments!

  6:02pm Matt from Springfield:

  6:02pm Cecile:

wow, our daughter's wedding. takes me back.
  6:03pm david:

hi folks - is this a rerun? i can't place it...
  6:03pm Glenn L:

  6:03pm Matt from Springfield:

I had some CD comps of 80s New Wave called "Living In Oblivion" half a life ago, it introduced me to a lot of these group and songs. I SWEAR Clay must have put those together, except that there's no Missing Persons on those! :)
  6:03pm dinatekno:

Damn!!! Our Daughter's Wedding!! I am now pogoing in my cube!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:03pm Ken:

This is a brand spanking new Dusty Show, I think....
  6:04pm Liberty Girl NYC:

Where's the music? Stop the madness!
  6:04pm Matt from Springfield:

Hey Cecile and david and any other Pigeonites making their way in!

Clay is in Paris on vacay, so he left this show to be played tonight. ("Mr and Mrs Pigeon" checked into Julie's board early this morning!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm Ken:

Question for you regular Dusty show listeners - how does Clay Pigeon handle the cassette flip? Do I just switch it or do I play a bit of music during the flip?
  6:05pm david:

thanks Ken and Matt - i thought so - i thought I remembered Clay saying he wouldn't be there this week...
  6:05pm Matt from Springfield:

@Dinatekno: YES! I pogoed at my desk with you!
Some of the most high-energy synth rock ever!
  6:06pm sfrances:

hey y'all !
@ Ken: he either talks while flipping or plays a music track...
  6:06pm other david:

background music and seamless flip!
  6:06pm david:

he plays some soothing piano music for the flip - forget what it's called
  6:06pm Matt from Springfield:

@Ken: Traditionally Clay plays Cy Coleman's version of Debussy's "Reverie in Topaz" while making I brief live exchange on mike. Since you prob don't have that sitting nearby, play some piano music if you have it and talk on mike briefly.
  6:08pm Matt from Springfield:

Hey frances and OD! Welcome to this "babysat" Clay playlist!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:08pm Ken:

Cy Coleman huh? OK.
  6:09pm other david:

@Ken: might I suggest some Rush for the flip?

@Matt: howdy mister - this couldn't be in better hands.. unless Ken decides to jump in the elevator again!
  6:10pm ?:

did miss his banter with fabio about what color slacks he was wearing or if fabs ever went to a rush concert - shoulda known he wasn't around
  6:10pm Matt from Springfield:

Waiter, two Tom Collinses for the Collinses here!

Where's Danne? Champaign IL townies interviewed!
  6:10pm david:

perhaps a Starcastle ballad will do ;)
  6:11pm dale:

my new name is ?:
  6:11pm Matt from Springfield:

@OD: Finished that Archive an hour ago! That was hysterical, one for the 7SD history books! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm Ken:

Aww thanks Matt! It was pretty amazing. I kicked Andy's ass in that show.
  6:13pm david:

maybe the farming will skip a generation to the grandkids...
  6:15pm Matt from Springfield:

@Ken: The question now is, how to find NEW sticky situations to get unexpectedly into while recording a show!
  6:16pm Matt from Springfield:

Friendly folks, a nice Midwestern people mini-convention in NYC, on the Dusty Show!
  6:16pm other david:

Clay has an amazing ability to get cagey/reluctant people to speak their mind. I suspect it's partly because he's such a good bloke.
  6:17pm MenfussMike:

nothing wrong with a little Missing Persons.
  6:17pm George Serr:

OMG!!! The Duel is on my Birthday.
  6:18pm Matt from Springfield:

@david: With economies of scale, dominance of huge agribusiness, and oil subsidies, small farming is harder than ever. Except maybe for boutique/organic items. Future farmers "getting into" the business probably will be former restauranteurs/butchers who want to grow a fresh source of certain foods. In fact, some have already moved to the farm to do just that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm Ken:

Matt, I dont know if I want Andy to step up the stupid or the danger - anybody who knows the WFMU elevator can tell you, DONT jump in IT!
  6:18pm Carmichael:

Ken, you 2 could get trapped in the basement while it slowly fills with water.
  6:19pm Cecile:

well, goodbye all. See you later!
  6:20pm dale:

I wonder if mitt goes out to his garage and sits in an amc ambassador with zero miles on it and says 'i'll avenge you father - we'll be president yet'
  6:21pm Matt from Springfield:

Later, 'Cile!
  6:21pm glenn:

henri le chat noir on politics. tinyurl.com/8bgc92b
  6:21pm david:

never get tired of the on-tape unsealing
  6:22pm other david:

Cya Cecile!

@Ken: Is putting ones life in danger, permanently, all part and parcel of good radio?
  6:24pm dale:

is ralph nader still twitching and running?
  6:25pm Phillip in San Antonio:

I wish Nader was running but no. Bernie Sanders should go for it.
  6:25pm david:

nader is out this time dale...
  6:25pm Matt from Springfield:

The fact that US election are the lesser of *only* two evils is part of the problem. Why not a choice of 6-7 evils, configuring themselves into alliances and opposition as circumstances permit.
  6:26pm Phillip in San Antonio:

Jesse Ventura in 2016 maybe.
  6:27pm dale:

i remember one year when venezuela went though 3 presidents in one year. i think the fear of assassination kept them in heavy rotation
  6:27pm steve:

kano! play stuff like this during your duel with Fabio! the kids love it.
  6:27pm MenfussMike:

I wish Ralph was running too. Voted for him last time.
  6:28pm the glowing one:

6-7 evils still make not a single good
  6:28pm other david:

I am fascinated at how socialism became a dirty word in the US.

From the early 1900's, it was Socialists like Eugene Debs agitating for the equality of women and people of colour.
  6:28pm Matt from Springfield:

@dale: Still a better record than Africa, where 3 presidents can be rotated in one year sometimes because of actual assassinations!
  6:29pm Phillip in San Antonio:

Dr. Jill Stein is the Green Party candidate this year. And Gary Johnson is a third party also.
  6:30pm MenfussMike:

the lesser of 2 evils is STILL evil! Nader has endorsed Rocky Anderson. Ron Paul is getting my nod.
  6:30pm Phillip in San Antonio:

Pretty disappointing that we really don't get to see anything from the other parties.
  6:31pm david:

Jill Stein is running for Green, Roseanne for Peace and Freedom Party...
  6:32pm Fredericks:

"The fact that US election are the lesser of *only* two evils is part of the problem."
In 2000, Nader spoke of an instant run-off.
  6:32pm Phillip in San Antonio:

And marijuana too!
  6:33pm Matt from Springfield:

@glowing one: More choices of candidates are still better, any politician should be treated with caution, but why not have more competition in elections?
  6:34pm other david:

"The Republican and Democratic parties are alike capitalist parties — differing only in being committed to different sets of capitalist interests — they have the same principles under varying colors, are equally corrupt and are one in their subservience to capital and their hostility to labor."

^ that was said by Debs in 1904.

  6:34pm Phillip in San Antonio:

Roseanne loves her medical marijuana. It will be very interesting in November for the possible legalization of recreational marijuana in both Washington and Colorado.
  6:34pm Night Al:

Jill Stein and the Green Party will get my vote. I'm very liberal and make it a point to read everyone's website and platform on issues. www.gp.org speaks for me now that Dennis Kucinich is not running.
  6:35pm Matt from Springfield:

@Fredericks: I would support achieving that goal using an IRV or similar system, but that would require consistent activism at a state level. Cali (or at least San Fran) seems to be the only place on that path.
  6:35pm david:

Stein has instant run-off voting in the Green platform...
  6:37pm Phillip in San Antonio:

Who is Ken voting for?
  6:38pm Night Al:

Gary Johnson is ex-GOP. Ron Paul has some major opposing views on issues important to me. As do every other candidate but Jill Stein (and maybe Roseanne Barr).
  6:38pm sfrances:

I've been impressed by the Dem running for city council here/my 'hood, he's gone door to door to meet everyone, sent follow up postcard tied to what was discussed in person: a real worker, progressive breath of fresh air.
I'll be volunteering for Planned Parenthood/phone banks/for getting out the vote in my swing state...
  6:39pm david:

Lets not forget the Vermin Supreme - Jimmy McMillan ticket...
  6:39pm dale:

i may write in my cat peanut's name this year. seriously, people rag on o, but the economy was a freight train nosing over a cliff when he took over.
  6:39pm Beldar Conehead:

We are from France...
  6:40pm Matt from Springfield:

@OD: The main difference in America from 1904 to today, is that back then neither party was really organized; there were very liberal and progressive members in Republicans and Democrats, academics and unionists too, in addition to racists, Puritans, crooked financial elites and monopolists, throughout the country, in both parties.
  6:40pm Phillip in San Antonio:

I'm pretty much with you too Night Al. Stein is very refreshing.
  6:40pm northguineahills:

Man, I do BBV and the whole East Coast Family!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:41pm Julie:

(waving to the Dusty crew as I babysit the tape)
  6:41pm Phillip in San Antonio:

You can't trust a big butt and a smile.
  6:41pm Andrew Waterloo:

I've never heard a substantial ragging on Obama's handling of the economy. It's always stated as if it's a forgone conclusion.
  6:41pm Matt from Springfield:

@frances: I'M committed to "Bam", no turning away! (So please, um, don't spam my phone number :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm Julie:

stay tuned for sloppy tape flipping!
  6:42pm sfrances:

Hey Julie, thanks for babysitting! Hope to hear you on the 11th with the dual!
  6:42pm Night Al:

@ Phillip ... yes, I've been playing a lot of Jill Stein speeches and am very impressed by her.
  6:43pm Matt from Springfield:

Julie Julie! :D
Thanks for stopping by, and making sure us Dusty fans don't burn down the playlist while Clay's away! (waves)
  6:43pm sfrances:

I think you're safe Matt, I'm pretty sure we're just reaching out to my city since every city's Planned is mobilized..=)
  6:44pm other david:

@Matt: agreed! But what's scary is that.. in all that time.. a viable alternative has not been allowed to appear.

Julie <3

Gonna catch DNOTS on the archive later! Mad studying for the last few weeks cutting into my WFMU time.
  6:44pm sfrances:

(really enjoying this guy's take on the NEA, which is a viewpoint I've heard a few times)
  6:45pm Phillip in San Antonio:

There is no filler with Stein, but damn she doesn't have a chance, but i still feel better going with someone that isn't a puppet and has a real soul.
  6:45pm Night Al:

Obama signed the NDAA, the TPP, and let BP handle the Gulf oil volcano. He seems to agree with the military industrial complex agenda and hasn't done enough in my opinion to reverse global warming and further green energy.
  6:45pm Matt from Springfield:

"The new album Laxative, from the band Spiritually Constipated People..."
  6:45pm DPCD:

@glenn- are Canadians ready to build their fence yet?
  6:45pm dale:

excellent flip music
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm Julie:

There is another dual? No one told me!
  6:46pm david:

Julie that tape flip was smooth as a baby's bottom, you did Clay proud
  6:46pm Matt from Springfield:

Flawless tape turn! Success!
  6:46pm dale:

a change for the wurst makes me want a beer
  6:47pm Phillip in San Antonio:

Man Night Al, are we brothers?
  6:47pm other david:

Let's hear it for Julie's tape flippage!

*raises score card*

  6:47pm sfrances:

@Julie, it was *just barely* mentioned in the 1/2 of this week's Dusty show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47pm Julie:

  6:48pm northguineahills:

What everyone said about the flip....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm Julie:

Hmm well I think they JUST did one. But I'm about to nag both of them for a reunion this month. Fabio is here, Clay is not, so I've got the tough one ;)
  6:48pm david:

We need Julie to re-implicate herself in these duels, which are after all triumvirate duels... :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm Julie:

ahh such praise! I miss The Dusty Show!
  6:49pm dale:

i like ann romney. i think she should hook up with obama. once you go barack, you never go back
  6:49pm other david:

I miss the triumvirate :(
  6:50pm Matt from Springfield:

Some time in October? Have to check again. But another DJ Battle scheduled!

@Julie: OD's score confirms it! Play a CD/record of "The Star Spangled Banner" while draping a piece of gold-wrapped chocolate round your neck!
  6:50pm Night Al:

We have to get off fossil fuels. Practically EVERYTHING in our society is made and processed/transfered from fossil fuels. Fiat currency is based on it, and society will fall if we don't become a locally green-fueled, green fed society.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm Julie:

I will remind Clay of my excellent tape flippage!
  6:50pm Phillip in San Antonio:

Julie i almost got pulled over in Castle Hills the other day. 36 in a 35.
  6:51pm sfrances:

we miss you too Julie!! Yes, you def have the tougher cookie in studio ;) tho i'll admit i many of Fabio's opinions in re: taste, tho i also adore what you & Dusty bring to the table (even more)
  6:51pm david:

What's the word for a three-way competition that is equivalent to "duel?" I know we've been over this...
  6:51pm Matt from Springfield:

@OD: I miss the Triumvirate too :( Hopefully we can get a good hour+ reunion, in addition to the DJ Duel! :)

The crazy, positive energy of Clay's, Fabio's and Julie's board converged into a single one! Those were great times!
  6:52pm Phillip in San Antonio:

The transportation system in this country is very much outdated.
  6:54pm other david:

We're all just one bad occurance from the streets.

So yeah, that's why I'm socialist.
  6:54pm Matt from Springfield:

@Night Al: My environmental studies teacher had explained the severity of oil-based agribusiness in peak oil times: our current agriculture system basically converts oil into food...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm Julie:

We need more public transportation! And every place outside NYC I go it doesn't go late enough. 24 hour service has spoiled me.
  6:55pm Phillip in San Antonio:

Oh but fracking is going to save the U.S! HAH! I recently had to drive to Corpus Christi recently and wow it looks like a dirty mess.
  6:55pm Andrew Waterloo:

Especially since industrial farming relies so heavily on fertilizers
  6:55pm the glowing one:

@matt: most of it into meat actually
  6:55pm sfrances:

@Phillip: as someone who's never had a driver's license/never will & is completely dependent on public transportation: I can tell you that most places don't even have realiable public transportation. And forget about the cuts to Greyhound & Amtrak...
  6:56pm david:

Looks like we have critical mass on this triumvirate business... a three-party system...
  6:57pm sfrances:

~always remember~
  6:57pm Matt from Springfield:

@Julie: Despite the Nationals baseball team thrilled about increased attendance, public transport still shuts down during late weeknight games. There's a public fight about who should pay for later service, NO ONE wants to step up.
  6:57pm Night Al:

Ross Perot told everyone during the presidential debates from 1999, that ratifying NAFTA and the WTO trade agreements, would mean the end of the American middle-class. Obama is introducing the TPP trade agreements, known as NAFTA on steroids. Unemployment will only get worse for the USA if he's re-elected.
  6:57pm sfrances:

nice track, Julie!
  6:57pm other david:

It's not Rush, but it will suffice.
  6:58pm david:

@Night Al, I was surprised to go back and listen to some of those Ross Perot interviews from 20+ years ago... guy actually knew his stuff...
  6:58pm Matt from Springfield:

All right! Great Dusty Show, and as always great folks on the comments!
Have a fun trip in old Paree, Clay and Mrs! Thanks Julie and Ken for babysitting the tape.

Have a good night everyone! Start remembering and don't stop! :)
