Street interviews, listener call-ins, vinyl gluttery, sporadic normalcy, original floperas and fiktion, blatant talking over songs, politix, tenderness, and a vague undercurrent of angst. Right up your alley!

Options September 13, 2012: 9-11 ... Eleven Years On

Listen to this show:  Pop‑up player!

Artist Track Album Label Year Format Comments Approx. start time
September 11th, 2012, exactly eleven-years to the day since the attacks on the World Trade Center in Manhattan - I went with my micro-cassette recorder in tow, to interview people at the attack site and in nearby Zuccotti Park, where boisterous arguments were taking place concerning several of the days most contentious issues. Over the course of the day I was able to record a broad-range of opinions from a sizable cross-section of people. Be advised, some of the rhetoric was quite inflammatory and potentially offensive. However, in the interest of keeping it real, I have 'left it in' to give an accurate portrayal of the prevailing mood on-site at 9-11 ... eleven years on.

Thanks for listening to this episode of The Dusty Show. It's always a tough task to visit Ground Zero on 9-11. I ask myself if I am just bothering the families of the victims and the first responders, or if it is important to keep the memory of that day alive.

Zuccotti is always a hotbed of political discourse. Even more so since Occupy Wall Street immortalized the location in 2011. Please listen to next week's show, the one-year anniversary of OWS.

I appreciate your continued loyalty and support for this program. I also have to thank my wife, Kirsten, for allowing me to do these shows when I certainly could be doing something more lucrative. She is a steady supporter of myself and the show and that means everything to me.

The weeks fly by. On to another episode. Unitl next time everyone, take care, and always remember those who perished and gave their lives, and those who continue to suffer the terrible after-effects of 9-11-01.

Hello Clay and Pigeonaires!
Hi (on this side) kat!
Avatar 6:01pm Clay:

Hi kat. Good to see you.
  6:02pm Cecile:

Are you kidding me?
Avatar 6:02pm Clay:

Kata, Matt ... welcome.
Avatar 6:02pm Clay:

Hello, Cecile!
  6:03pm kata:

If you occupy the Clay Street Bridge you'll be within walking distance of Tops Diner.

Hi Everyone.
Avatar 6:04pm Clay:

Hi, Danne!
  6:05pm Matt from Springfield:

The last speaker and the first are the best intro to a 9/11 anniversary I've heard.
Disregarding the shouters any. Freedom of screamcchh.
  6:06pm kat330:

Clay, did you wander into a small thicket of opinion, or was this pervasive?
  6:06pm Phillip in San Antonio:

Man Clay, you really got this guy started!
  6:06pm kata:

kudos to you Clay for orbiting a touchy subject, the "third rail" indeed.
  6:07pm Phillip in San Antonio:

Did your interview start all of that?
  6:07pm Matt from Springfield:

Welcome back Danne!

I saw you'd returned on the Hearty White playlist. I've only live commented there once so far, but you may find a Mr. "Matthyou Springwater" when you visit there ;)
  6:07pm Scott Blake:

Hello from Omaha, NE.
Avatar 6:08pm Clay:

Hi Phillip!

@Kata ... TY. There was a small area of Zuccotti where people were boisterously arguing. Cops all around, but not intervening. A couple of blocks from the WTC site.
  6:08pm Philo Gristle:

Howdy, Clay and All! Great work so far.
  6:08pm kat330:

Hi, Omaha Scott!
Avatar 6:09pm Clay:

Scott, been a while. Hope life's been good to you. Homesick for SW Iowa, bro.
  6:09pm Matt from Springfield:

This episode is an allegory of the Dusty Show; The shouting nuts in the background represent all other political discourse nowadays, Clay and the thoughtful interviewees represent this show!
Avatar 6:09pm Clay:

TY Philo. Nice to see you and the Mrs.
  6:09pm Bad Ronald:

Brilliant Clay! I smell a Pulitzer...
  6:10pm Danne D:

I avoided the TV on that day - I remember the day in high school watching the space shuttle blow up over and over again.
  6:10pm kat330:

Philo and I were at Ground Zero site around three weeks after. Seared into memory forever...
  6:10pm Danne D:

I listened on the radio and looked at stuff on the web.
  6:10pm Phillip in San Antonio:

Man i really need to see that movie Bad Ronald.
Avatar 6:11pm Clay:

Hi Ronald. TY! Thanks for stopping by.
  6:11pm Danne D:

I wasn't down there for a long long time.

I have a hard time even going down to that PATH stop now. I tried to keep my head down as I don't want to see anybody taking a picture and smiling - I'd probably go off on them.
Avatar 6:11pm Clay:

That's heavy, kat. Must have been devastating to see.
  6:12pm Ike:

Blaming everything on one group or one conspiracy makes everything so much easier for some troubled minds to understand... it squeezes the world into a simple dime-store narrative with specific mustache-twirling villain(s).
  6:12pm Danne D:

I was down by there a couple months ago and there was this guy going person to person hocking some book and had the page open to the burning buildings. I called him a fucking ghoul.
Avatar 6:12pm Clay:

Good insight, Ike. Sounds correct.
  6:13pm Scott Blake:

I recently conducted a media study of archived footage from September 11, 2001, counting the number of times major news networks showed the plane crashes, building collapses and people falling from the towers.
  6:13pm kat330:

@Clay/Danne: We had already planned a NYC visit months ahead of that. Our Manhattan hosts were the ones who suggested we all go down there. I'm still uncertain we should have.
  6:14pm Scott Blake:

CNN showed the plane crash 109 times from 9AM to midnight, about once every eight minutes. The BBC showed the planes crashing into the towers 240 times, roughly 16 times per hour.
  6:14pm Danne D:

I don't begrudge people going down there and remembering in the fashion they see fit. And Clay, I have zero problem with you going down and getting the thoughts of people that are there - that is a different thing altogether.
  6:14pm Scott Blake:

CNN showed the towers collapsing 161 times, or about once every five minutes. CBS was the first to show victims falling from the towers, beginning around noon and replaying the footage 13 times that day.
  6:15pm Cecile:

well, I must go, but great show Clay.
  6:15pm Matt from Springfield:

I was glad in retrospect that the teachers at my high school didn't play TV the first 4 hours or so after 9/11--I saw glimpses of TV at the library in between the classes, but it seems the more people watched of TV of 9/11 in the first few hours/days, the more traumatized they seem to have been.
  6:15pm Danne D:

@kat - I certainly have no issue with you, I know you're good people
  6:15pm Peter fae Glasgow:

Hey Clay, sounding awesome!
Avatar 6:16pm Clay:

Scott ... When I gather soundbytes. it's strange to see it again. Too real.
6:16pm What Online News Looked Like on 9/11:

Avatar 6:16pm Clay:

Bye Cecile. Always welcome here.
  6:17pm plil:

did you notice on the msnbc rebroadcast of the original 9 11 telecast one reporter mentioned twice that bombs were set off inside the twin towers
  6:17pm dale:

anthrax scare a week later was the icing on the cake. sad time in our history.
Avatar 6:17pm Clay:

Hi Peter! Welcome and thank you.
  6:17pm Timb:

Thanks for doing a show about 9/11, Clay. Not enough people talk about this anymore, honestly.
  6:17pm Danne D:

@Matt - I bet your teachers are a similar age to me. All I know is that the day that Challenger blew up they played it like 1000 times. I knew the coverage of the WTC would be the same way. It was self preservation. I watched the collapse later that day (while I was buying the radio I used to listen to coverage).

My sister's next door neighbor died in one of the towers - he worked in finance, the one brother of five with the "safe" job - his other brothers were police and firefighters. You just never know.
  6:18pm Carmichael:

Yeesh, just arrived. Hiya Clay and ClayHeads. Rock me gently, rock me slowly.
  6:18pm Matt from Springfield:

It was a uniquely horrible thing, but so raw, visceral, and repetitive--there was no new information for a long time. It's best not to stick to the TV in times like that. Instead remember the victims, and find out what you can do to help survivors.
  6:18pm Scott Blake:

I believe the news acted against peaceful society on 9/11 by showing the plane crashes, building collapses, and falling people, giving power to the very people that wanted to frighten us.
Avatar 6:19pm Clay:

Hi Tim. Good to see you. Hello Plil.

Welcome, Carmichael.
  6:19pm Danne D:

The WFMU twitter links to the Aircheck show from a few years ago (hosted by Evan Funk Davies incidentally) which actually had a lot of the media confusion than went on.

I think the truthers are nuts fwiw.
  6:20pm skittles:

oh my god californians are so dumb
  6:20pm Phillip in San Antonio:

How old is this girl?
Avatar 6:20pm Clay:

You nailed it Matt. Wish I'd followed your advice.
Interesting theory Scott. Your study sounds compelling.
  6:21pm Night Al:

I made my first trip ever to NYC on the Thanksgiving Day after 911. All the photos and notes along the fence brought tears to my eyes. The smell still lingered around there. Got off at the Fulton station? and immediately noticed the smell. Amazed that the windows in the church there were intact.
  6:21pm Matt from Springfield:

@Danne: You know that could be a factor. They may have been a bit older, but probably remembered such sudden live events well.
  6:21pm kat330:

@Danne: In further explication, our hosts were actually in Los Angeles on 9/11, and my (since 1975 in Boston) was supposed to fly home for her birthday -- today, September 13th -- but couldn't get back to the U.W.S. for many days. By the time we arrived, I think we were compliant with anything and everything they chose to do.
  6:21pm Danne D:

I remember in the office building I worked in at that time being in the little deli that it had inside and basically the grainiest (over the air) tv images. This dude was there and was commenting about how the buildings collapsing would affect the real estate prices. I wanted to throttle him but chalked it up to a defense mechanism in his mind - the equivalent of nervous laughter.
  6:21pm Matt from Springfield:

And just how the Hell did Iraq get back in the picture here???
  6:22pm Carmichael:

Interesting theory, skittles. BTW, you're an excellent snack.
  6:22pm Phillip in San Antonio:

What is Blackwater called right now?
  6:23pm Fredericks:

FOX news Matthew.
  6:23pm Danne D:

I have to turn down the yelling people here for a moment.
  6:23pm kat330:

[missing: my "Best Friend"]
  6:23pm plil:

uugghhhhh ,,, cant listen to this anymore
  6:23pm Danne D:

If someone can hip me to when the screaming match stops I'd appreciate it.
  6:23pm Fredericks:

Blackwater is "Xe" last I heard.
  6:23pm RCinMT:

Damn this is good radio!
  6:24pm Matt from Springfield:

@Scott: Bin Laden wanted death and destruction and fear--but I agree with an article on how the attack probably went off visually more spectacularly than even bin Laden could have planned. And the media totally went with it.
Avatar 6:24pm Clay:

Fredericks slips in the side door. Hello, fine fellow.
  6:24pm Danne D:

The posters were all so heartrending in the weeks after.

I remember the awful smell - even being 20 miles away in Woodbridge - and knowing what it must be.
Avatar 6:24pm Clay:

  6:24pm Fredericks:

Screaming stopped.
  6:24pm Phillip in San Antonio:

Thanks Fredericks!
  6:24pm Danne D:

Looks like screaming stop so my headphones are back up.
  6:24pm kat330:

Seems over, Danne.
  6:25pm Fredericks:

Hey! Clayton and pals.
  6:25pm Morbid Memory:

The sound of bodies hitting the pavement in the audio feeds from the scene.
  6:25pm Matt from Springfield:

Damn right RCinMT!
  6:26pm kat330:

It's back...
  6:26pm Marmalade kitty:

Hello Clay! Listeners!
  6:26pm Danne D:

Tim kinda got lost in the midst of those Osmond family specials.
  6:26pm Matt from Springfield:

*Still* behind Fredericks/Phillip--the unusually tweedy name Academi is the new buzz.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academi, academi.com
  6:26pm Danne D:

Yeah I noticed kat.
  6:26pm other david:

Listening, great as ever Clay. Though a lot of this is tough.

Shouting and screaming, defending yourself by invading a country that didn't attack you.. everyone walks away from the argument convinced they're right.

9/11 was seismic, surreal as it unfolded, but now I think everyone, everywhere, believes their town could be next.
  6:27pm Scott Blake:

Thanks for positive comment Clay and Matt from Springfield. I did the media study to respond to all the negative feedback from my 9/11 Flipbook. I think it is important to talk about the media’s participation in sensationalizing the tragedy.
Avatar 6:27pm Clay:

Good one, Danny.
Avatar 6:27pm Clay:

Other David ... really good to see you my friend.
  6:28pm Matt from Springfield:

Hello Kitty and OD! Come and join the madness! ;)
  6:28pm Danne D:

"Do the Math" is one of those phrases that I wish was retired.
Avatar 6:28pm Clay:

Marmalade. Hi! Glad you stopped by.
  6:28pm Phillip in San Antonio:

Whoa, so Xe changed the name to Academi!
  6:29pm Fredericks:

Damn, Matt. You'd think they were criminals the way they change their names.
  6:29pm Carmichael:

Thank you for taking a moment to rock, Clay.
  6:30pm Eddie VH:

There is nothing that pull-offs can't improve!
  6:30pm kata:

I visit 'What Really Happened' often. It's important to look beyond the "official story."
  6:31pm Matt from Springfield:

@Phillip: That kind of mirrors the intel world, where with the exception of the State Department's analysis unit (the Bureau of Intelligence and Research, INR), the more "studious" a covert group sounds ("Research" "Planning" "Study Unit" etc), the more likely it is to be a doorkicking, shoot-em-up direct action force...
  6:31pm other david:

That was an awesome moment
Avatar 6:31pm Clay:

No Problem, Carmichael. More rock in the future. Promise.
  6:32pm Matt from Springfield:

@Fredericks: Like passports sown in the sides of their suitcases, except that in their case it's company names!
Avatar 6:32pm Clay:

True Eddie. Pull-offs and a 50w Marshall w/Angle Cabinet.
  6:32pm Leonard Bernstein:

This will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before.
  6:32pm Danne D:

This guy must get some interesting misdirected mail:
  6:33pm Eddie VH:

...stacks of 'em!
Avatar 6:34pm Clay:

I love that, Mr. Bernstein. :>)
  6:34pm Matt from Springfield:

@Danne: The Truthers say: "Wake up Winnipeg folk/bluegrass scene! You're gonna be next!!" :)
  6:35pm Matt from Springfield:

Thank you Mr. Bernstein, that's wonderful.
WFMU is sure doing its part.
  6:35pm Phillip in San Antonio:

I can't find any information on how many people work for Academi.
Avatar 6:35pm Clay:

Winnepeg = The Guess Who, Brave Belt, BTO!
  6:36pm Night Al:

I think the USA spends WAY too much money on defense, when so much needs to be built up in our country, not destroyed in others. Why does the USA have to be the policeman for the world? I feel like the military is JONESING to start more conflicts. Libya, Egypt, Syria, Afghanistan. I feel like there is an agenda that is being covertly implemented sometimes. As an ex-army member, I'm angered by all the people calling for conflict when they've never served.
  6:37pm Carmichael:

... and Slim Whitman!
  6:37pm Matt from Springfield:

I wonder if there will someday be a special plaque commemorating the 55+ first responders who have died since 9/11 because of illness.
Avatar 6:37pm Clay:

Welcome. Al!
  6:38pm Carmichael:

Al, were you in the US Army?
  6:39pm Phillip in San Antonio:

Bit of a light-hearted note.
  6:39pm Night Al:

  6:39pm other david:

  6:40pm Night Al:

  6:40pm kata:

  6:41pm Carmichael:

Cool, Al. I'm a USAF veteran.
Avatar 6:41pm Clay:

Dale! Over hill, over ... Good 2cu.
  6:41pm Matt from Springfield:

@Night Al: Even most very senior commanders in the military will generally not want to invade somewhere. Your last sentence hit the nail on the head, esp. by neocons: it's the political elite at the very top of government, who have beliefs like America's elite outside of government (from whom they are drawn). They want to remake the world in America/their-vision-of's image, and some don't care how many of our servicemen will die or be broken to accomplish it.
  6:41pm Night Al:

My dad was AF in Korea
  6:42pm kat330:

@Night Al: It's more often than not been orchestrated by the Masters of War. [Dylan cf.]
  6:42pm Danne D:

  6:43pm Danne D:

  6:45pm Matt from Springfield:

@Clay: Speaking of the Zuccotti location, do you often see Truthers congregated there?
  6:45pm Danne D:

This guy needs to speak up a little.
  6:45pm kat330:

Shopping, shopping -- yeah, I recall hearing that mantra over and over, too. Consumerism is the #1 U.S. religion.

  6:46pm Danne D:

Does the name Zuccotti make anyone else hungry for Italian food?
Avatar 6:46pm Clay:

Ioki ... it DOES kind of sound like him. You're right.
  6:47pm Matt from Springfield:

At Occupy Congress in January, there was a whole slew of political opinions on the scene, but nearly all of them were cordial and supported core Occupy beliefs. The two exceptions were small groups of Truthers, and anti-Semites (in that case, they were different groups).
  6:48pm other david:

This is difficult as all hell to listen to, but needs to be recorded and aired - brilliant, Clay
  6:48pm kat330:

@Danne: You should take a gander at Fabio's last set! [Parmegiani and Capella ]
  6:49pm Matt from Springfield:

@Danne: I once engaged in tongue-in-cheek pseudo-history on a Dusty Show board; I explained that Zuccotti got it's name because Italian immigrants used to cook "zucchini" and sell it "hot" to passers-by :)
  6:49pm Phillip in San Antonio:

Zuccotti has made me crave a cannelloni.
Avatar 6:49pm Clay:

Thanks other david. Should've used my digital recorder. Live and learn.
  6:50pm kata:

Matt, I want to respectfully say to you: speaking out against supporting Israel's wars does not equal anti-semitism. It is criticism of a governments actions, plain and simple.

Award winning Clay
  6:53pm other david:

Clay you need another hour on the show, where people can call in and reflect on the interviews :)
  6:53pm dale:

sagan, re the day after film - 'Imagine a room awash in gasoline, and there are two implacable enemies in that room. One of them has nine thousand matches, the other seven thousand matches. Each of them is concerned about who's ahead, who's stronger'

i don't know why, but i thought it was one has 9,000, the other has one match. point is the same
  6:53pm Scott Blake:

I've been thinking about the 1,000 year anniversary of 9/11 lately. I hope there will be less screaming.
  6:53pm Matt from Springfield:

@kata: It's all about context. "Zionism" means different things to different people, and many who are opposed to Israel's settlements, or wars, or the state as a Jewish identity call themselves anti-Zionist. The particular group I saw, by their posters and listening for a minute weren't focused on peace or ending aggression. At least in my interpretation.

  6:55pm Night Al:

When I flew to NYC for my first visit on Thanksgiving Day just after 911, I was pulled aside by a red beret and questioned. It seems my only coat I owned was my army jacket from 1982. I looked a little militant to him for just 10 weeks after 911. I explained I've been living in St Pete since I mustered out and had no winter clothes. A girl I met at my local tiki bar had invited me up to stay with her on 116th St in spanish harlem since I've never been to NYC. She and her friends were down decompressing after 911. She had to back out of the WTC area that morning on her way to work. If she hadn't been running late, she would have been there. Thanks Tracy Merlau! Love you girl!

I hear ya Matt. Thanks for clarifying.
  6:56pm Matt from Springfield:

Most others at the event who mentioned Israel spoke words against its aggression, or settlements. Also about the US letting Israel dictate our foreign policy for us. But in that context they weren't sympathizing with Hamas/Hezbollah or anything like that. It's what you say, as well as how.

Have a good night everyone!
Stay safe next week, Clay!
  6:59pm Matt from Springfield:

I agree OD @6:53! Clay should do that on the next "Double Dusty" fill-in, air a tape and ask for calls on the interviews afterwards! :)

@kata: My pleasure, I hear you too. That's the problem: such a complex issue is hard to get a handle on sometimes. If some people only want simple answers to everything, they're the ones who will inevitable become extremists.
  6:59pm Matt from Springfield:

Powerful show Clay! I'm going back to listen again later!
Have a good night Danne, kata, kat330, OD, Philo, dale..and all you wonderful commenters!
