Live performance and chat with David Bromberg
It all started with an unexpected solo slot on stage at the Isle of Wight Festival for David Bromberg. The 1970 festival goers were tough on the performers, but Bromberg managed to win them over and gained a contract with Columbia Records in the process. Since then David has, as his bio notes, "...played with everyone, he’s toured everywhere, he can lead a raucous big band or hold an audience silent with a solo acoustic blues." David Bromberg is playing three nights later in the week at City Winery, but managed to make time to stop at WFMU for a live set on Irene's show.

Bob from Miami:

Hi Irene~Checking in from Miami survived another hurricane/tropical storm weekend. Weather's clearing and you show makes it all the better.

Good aftermorning, all! Bob, these storms are a joke to me. What did we get? Maybe 40mph winds?

Irene:

Hi Everybody! Looks like the torrential rains are here in NYC too (probably not related to the approaching hurricane). The thunder rumbled as I got
into the building and the skies just opened up. I say it's a good day to stay put and listen to WFMU.
  12:15pm
kat330:

Late but been listening, and now need to be off to the kitchen for a bit.

Hi, Irene and all of youse! Can't wait for the Bromberg!
  12:18pm
DCE:

13 minutes til lunch...I...can't make it...
  12:20pm

Great show, so far, Irene! I've got the day off, due to the storm. Just making coffee now. (I'm so lazy sometimes.)
  12:20pm
Van in DC:

Wow, what a wonderful flow between these opening tracks!
  12:22pm
brett:

Daniel is an awesome dude
  12:26pm
DCE:

Brett, I met Daniel in Cleveland last year at a house show. I attest to your statement.
  12:26pm
Van in DC:

Silk Route. Wow. This would flow into Silk Road stuff from Kitaro so nicely. (Yeah I know, "who?") :)
  12:27pm
Bob from Miami:

Beautiful set Irene, makes me wanna pull out some of my old Sandy Bull and Davy Graham LP's. Not now later!!!
  12:27pm
mark vt:

Storm? is that thing working its way up the coast? Me no have no tv. Guess I should pay attention.
  12:28pm
D in Miami:

Kitaro? Isn't that the new age-y guy?
  12:31pm
Van in DC:

Yes, he is *awesome* (in my opinion)
  12:41pm
Van in DC:

No no, not mistaken for Kitaro...just was saying Silk Route would flow into Silk Road nicely :)
  12:42pm
D in Miami:

Ooh, the wind just picked up with a lot of rain. I love this weather.
  12:47pm
Bob from Miami:

Hi D in Miami, i'm in Hollywood and were getting lot's of wind shear and torrential rain. I'm packing records all day (ebay) and listening to the best show on FMU. Best of both worlds..
  12:48pm
kat330:

Here in southern Indiana, no rain (per usual) though imagine we'll see the remnants of Isaac by week's end.

Sweet hummingbird drinking deep outside my window. :)

Aw shucks, Bob in Miami! Thanks for the kind words. Stay dry, everybody!
  12:50pm
Paul Elliot:

Exactly why I love Irene Trudel, a total chestnut from what must be the bands' worst record. Great song i used to love bu have notplayed in a few decades...
  12:51pm
Matt from Springfield:

Excited about the Bromberg set! Hi Irene and everybody!
  12:54pm
Paul Elliot:

On the other hand - I ran into Todaphonic Todd at Lincun Center Outdoors a few weeks back at the Laura Nyron tribute and was talking about Gil Scott Heron with a mutual friend - I turned to Todd and noted -"Bet you never played any Gil Scott on your show", right "Nah" he respnded. That's what I thought. I know Irene would pull some Gil Scott Heron out of a hat in a set including sufi music and some old ECM Records gem...
  12:55pm
D in Miami:

It's nice to know someone else here in SFL listens to FMU. I've only met one person who was familiar with it. When I describe it to friends they say it sounds like a weird station. If they only knew!
  12:55pm
susie:

oooh! Trummors is good! New sound for me. Thanks for playing that!
  12:55pm
kat330:

We've been hearing every conceivable "moon" related song since the news of Armstrong. There are so *many* this included.
  12:57pm
D in Miami:

But does the moon rise, or is it that we sink?
  12:57pm
duke:

People on twitter seemed confused about which Armstrong http://929jackfm.com/youve-got-the-wrong-armstrong-6-people-confused-over-neil-armstrongs-death/
  12:58pm
kat330:

[s.b. so many *great* ones, this included.... hey, it's Monday, and I had an ill weekend...]
  12:59pm
Bob from Miami:

Hey D it's the only station that matters, have been a supporter for 10+ years, have sold records at their annual record fair for many years.
  12:59pm
D in Miami:

Well, at least we knew it wasn't Stretch-Armstrong.
  12:59pm
kat330:

I heard that Armstrong's family suggested in memoriam people should look up at the moon and wink. That's so nice.
  1:00pm
Matt from Springfield:

The Moon probably rises, but I just guess that because it's much smaller and orbits us. The Earth is more "still" relative to the Moon.
  1:00pm
Marshall Stacks:

David Bromberg! Wow, what a coup to have him on your show, Irene. Really looking forward to his set!
  1:01pm
kat330:

Liking the thread of a theme going on here, Irene: Northern Lights - Southern Cross to Sun Midnight Sun.
  1:01pm
kat330:

@Matt: The Sun also rises.
  1:02pm
D in Miami:

Sadly, I discovered it about 5 years ago. But what a find! You were probably one of the collectors at the MAM vinyl show here.
  1:03pm
Bob from Miami:

Ditto kat330: Saw it written and i saw it say!!
  1:04pm
Marshall Stacks:

For what it's worth, I almost literally bumped into Buzz Aldrin in a men's room a year or so ago. A little guy in a really nice suit with more gold bling than you could shake a stick at (sorry). Quite a contrast with the very private Neil A.

Ever hear the great Angst song "Neil Armstrong?" It wouldn't fit in with what Irene's playing right now, though.
  1:06pm
Bob from Miami:

4 D~Yeah i set up along with Michael from Yardbird. I owned Blue Note in Miami..
  1:06pm
kat330:

@MS: After visiting the various Space-related museums -- Gus Grissom, just up the road a few pieces; Huntsville, AL and just this past June the Kennedy Space Center -- it was clear all the early astronauts needed to be small. Probably is still preferred.
  1:07pm
Matt from Springfield:

Heh! Hi kat! :)

That's a nice gesture for Neil - if the sky is clear tonight I will wink at it!
  1:09pm
kat330:

Like so many my age, I really wanted to be an astronaut, then I found out about the 20/20 vision requirement. One of my first popped dreams.

Hi, Mattram!
  1:09pm
Cheri Pi:

this is really nice Irene.
  1:09pm
D in Miami:

Bob, I helped you guys set up. I work there. Small town.
  1:10pm
kat330:

Yay!!
  1:10pm
Matt from Springfield:

All right Dave Bromberg!
  1:11pm
Matt from Springfield:

@kat: Makes me want to pronounce it like Ber-tram/-trand.
Mattram Russell! :)
  1:13pm
Bob from Miami:

4D:Remember it well, that's what i love about this show!!
  1:13pm
kat330:

That's a good association thank goodness. :)
  1:14pm
D in Miami:

Kat, I was just at Kennedy Center a month ago. Never really had an interest in being an astronaut before, but it really peaked my interest. The whole idea of going to space is just amazing, no matter what.
  1:16pm
kat330:

What a cool way to promote his CDs!
  1:17pm
kat330:

@D: Did you see one or both of the IMAX shows?
  1:18pm
D in Miami:

Irene, this show is really making me want to finally get out and buy an acoustic guitar. I just have an electric, but always loved playing my friends' acoustics. Just feeling the resonance is so great.
  1:20pm
D in Miami:

Kat, I watched both. I was really skeptical about the whole IMAX/3D thing, but we had to see the 2nd. It was so good.
  1:22pm
zoot:

I have fond memories of seeing Mr. Bromberg perform back in the mid-seventies. I still have this tune on vinyl.
He's swell!
  1:22pm
Matt from Springfield:

Is this the song he wrote with George H? You can tell that's George lead guitaring!
  1:23pm
kat330:

@D: I've always played acoustic, but my husband bought me an electric (unbidden) a few years ago. My problem with it is how effing *heavy* it is!
  1:23pm
Bob from Miami:

Hey Irene/Dave did George play on the single? Sound like his slide work..
  1:24pm
Parq:

I have vivid memories of going to see Bromberg's retirement show Part 1 in Central Park, including Phoebe Snow joining in a great version of Hit the Road, Jack, and then going home and taping (and listening to) Part 2 at the Bottom Line, leading off with a heartfelt version of "Sloppy Durnk", and including a great version of "Holdup". By the way, I've never heard that 45 mix before.
  1:25pm
kat330:

Yeah, I think it must have been My Sweet George.

@D: Time allowed us only the Hubble Telescope show. It was extraordinary.
  1:26pm
Marshall Stacks:

@Parq - yes! When I saw him in Central Park he was backed by the Brecker Bros. Fond memories of that fantastic show.
  1:28pm
Bob from Miami:

Love Aero Plane w Vassar Clements and Norm Blake. I promoted it in the south for WB in the early 70's. Thank you David,so wonderful to have you touring again. Hope you come south!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm
Irene:

Yeah, George Harrison played on The Holdup. Sounded like the session was wild!
  1:31pm
Dave E.:

Great interview Irene.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm
Irene:

Wish I could've gotten him to talk about George a little bit more. I'll just have to get David back in to talk about him sometime. I felt like Bromberg had a lot of stories to tell and was just getting warmed up.
  1:35pm
kat330:

@Irene: OTOH, he mentioned the documentary doesn't delve much into that area.
  1:35pm
KP:

Went to see David Bromberg at the Bottom Line. Neil Young and Bob Dylan were sitting together at the table next to us. Actually I was tipped the would be there so i guess we came to see them. They did not play.
  1:37pm
Matt from Springfield:

Thanks Irene! And yes, his anecdotes could probably fill several audio books!
  1:38pm
Matt from Springfield:

Isle of Wight - just like with Leonard Cohen, the night seemed to be good in calming the wild audience (along with their music).
  1:39pm
Matt from Springfield:

@KP: Wow. Was that a sold out show? Did you seek out their table or just happen to sit next to them?
  1:43pm
kat330:

I know there's a Bugs toon that fits this tune. :)
  1:44pm
Parq:

There was an album of the 1970 Isle of White show. Hendrix had a kind-of famous set there. On the album, Kristoferson introduces his last two songs by saying "We'll do two more in spite of anything but rifle fire; then we'll split."
  1:46pm
KP:

The friend had a connection to the place and he was sitting with us. He sat there staring at Dylan the whole time and when Zimmy got up to use the bathroom, he jumped up and followed him in there.
  1:47pm
kat330:

Don't know when this was recorded, Irene, but the Hiatt choice must have come close to his 60th milestone last week.
  1:48pm
KP:

There was a big crowd. Nobody (except maybe my friend) bothered NY and BD.
  1:49pm
kat330:

@KP: That's just creepy. As I've said before, celebrity probably sucks.

  1:59pm
Matt from Springfield:

@KP: Besides your stalker friend, sound like a great show! ;)
  2:00pm
Matt from Springfield:

Most peculiar tune Woody wrote, or sung? It doesn't strike me as so unusual, since Woody covered some pretty peculiar tunes out of traditional American folk anyway.
  2:01pm

Thanks Dave, and Irene!

I'm just going by Dave's opinion on the Woody tune here.

hi Irene,
Bromberg, Jerry Jeff, John Hartford--what a line-up! Had the priviledge to see all 3, at an earlier Philly Folk Fest, guess around '69-'70. A solo performence, on a warm summer aft. w/ John, at the long-gone Englishtown Music Hall still haunts my reveries!!

Doug will be in Studio P or live at the mothership?
