Listener comments!

Fri. 8/24/12 12:05pm Matt from Springfield:

I join the "Caravan" of listeners heading over to Steinski..
  Fri. 8/24/12 12:05pm Honey Water:

Howdy and drool folks! Yesterday's and today's soon-to-be lunch: I llather a pita pocket's interior with black olive tapenade. Strew in some shredded lettuce, crumbles of feta cheese and bacon, thinly mandarined cucumber slices, strips of roasted red pepper and grilled onions, chopped boiled egg and garden-fresh tomatoes, and a couple strips of grilled chicken breast. Opa! Pita perfection! Now, into the kitchen to prepare as I listen.
  Fri. 8/24/12 12:06pm Honey Water:

Oh, yes, and Caravan's a fave, so this should be eggs-L-ent!
Fri. 8/24/12 12:07pm listener james from westwood:

oh, man, honey water, you're gonna have me going down to the greek joint a block away hearing about that lunch!
  Fri. 8/24/12 12:07pm Honey Water:

{s.b. Slather, oiks.}
Fri. 8/24/12 12:07pm Matt from Springfield:

Hi HW!
Chef's salad in a pita sandwich!
Avatar    Fri. 8/24/12 12:10pm Doug Schulkind:

OK, that's better. Sorry 'bout that.
  Fri. 8/24/12 12:11pm Danne D:

will listen to the archive (I like to listen to these start to finish). I love the Steinski archives. I enjoy the way he does his read backs (including a song snippet - it'd be cool if some other DJs - for the prerecorded shows - adopted a similar style).

Thanks for getting these archived, Doug!
Avatar    Fri. 8/24/12 12:13pm Doug Schulkind:

@Danne D
I totally agree with you. Steinski's innovation with his talkovers is just brilliant.
Avatar    Fri. 8/24/12 12:14pm Doug Schulkind:

It's also a TON of work. It means you can record the show live, you have to pre-record all the mic breaks and then edit in the sound snippets. I used to watch Steinski produce these shows. It took him 20 or more hours for each hour-long show. Incredible.
  Fri. 8/24/12 12:18pm northguineahills:

Did Caravan ever cover "Caravan"?
  Fri. 8/24/12 12:20pm Honey Water:

OK, back from kitchen, but now hands in my pockets preoccupied.

@LJfW: Only those with a budget to keep pantry and fridge with all ingredients ever needed for anything could always "have that recipe again." But it's ever so nice when what's on hand comes together for a special taste treat! Can't think of any improvement to this -- a few pine nuts maybe.
Fri. 8/24/12 12:20pm Matt from Springfield:

Nat King Cole always delivers.
Avatar    Fri. 8/24/12 12:20pm Doug Schulkind:

Didn't Ornette Coleman call his group Caravan of Dreams for a while?
  Fri. 8/24/12 12:22pm Honey Water:

Oh and [reluctantly putting down pita], Hi, back atcha Matt! :)
  Fri. 8/24/12 12:25pm northguineahills:

It will be a while before I eat today. All of the talk of cheese yesterday got to me before I broke down and got into the Havarti & Muenster. Being lactose intolerant sucks (I even took lactaid beforehand). I regret nothing!
Fri. 8/24/12 12:26pm Matt from Springfield:

I may want to eata pita myself after hearing that wonderful description!
  Fri. 8/24/12 12:27pm Carmichael:

I remember seeing the Neville Brothers and being surprised by their scorching Caravan version. Charles Neville and guitarist Brian Stoltz really "Duked" it out!
  Fri. 8/24/12 12:29pm Honey Water:

@Matt: The tapenade is what's making this so extraordinary. Rarely do we have it on hand, thus the MacArthur Park aspect of it -- such a pita.
Avatar    Fri. 8/24/12 12:29pm Doug Schulkind:

The Nevilles: American royalty.
  Fri. 8/24/12 12:30pm Honey Water:

With my attention span, there are probably not very many singular melodies I could hear over and over for an hour, but Caravan is one for certain. Harlem Nocturne another, Rhapsody in Blue, Take 5, a few others.
Avatar    Fri. 8/24/12 12:34pm Doug Schulkind:

I did an hour of "Hey Jude" a few months ago on my Tuesday show. Not sure I could've taken much longer...
  Fri. 8/24/12 12:35pm trish:

Appreciate the lunch inspiration, Honey Water.
"Hey, I have most of that stuff.."
  Fri. 8/24/12 12:35pm Honey Water:

Yay! Go for it, Trish!! :)
  Fri. 8/24/12 12:40pm northguineahills:

This space age pop is groovy!
  Fri. 8/24/12 12:42pm Honey Water:

@Doug: Guess I didn't catch that show so can't really ad-JUDE-icate it, but my guess is I might be climbing the curtains (and I don't even have any) by the 1/2-hour mark.
Fri. 8/24/12 12:42pm Matt from Springfield:

Lambert, Hendricks & Ross! Cool cats, they are. The original people who did "Twisted".
  Fri. 8/24/12 12:44pm Honey Water:

@Matt: I presume you've heard Joni's cover?
Avatar    Fri. 8/24/12 12:45pm Doug Schulkind:

@Honey Water
It was actually a pretty diverse hour of sounds:

wfmu.org...
  Fri. 8/24/12 12:45pm Ike:

I remember hearing this program when it was originally broadcast. The playing of lots of different renditions of "Caravan" had already been going around at FMU, I think. Steinski brought this compulsion to a climax.
  Fri. 8/24/12 12:46pm Danne D:

Steinski spoiled us listeners :)
  Fri. 8/24/12 12:47pm Honey Water:

Kiitos, Doug!
Fri. 8/24/12 12:47pm Matt from Springfield:

@HW: The first version I (and most) probably hear. I heard it was a cover shortly after.
Avatar    Fri. 8/24/12 12:47pm Doug Schulkind:

About a year ago, Steinski uploaded for me a collection of about five hundred versions of Caravan. It...was...overwhelming.
  Fri. 8/24/12 12:49pm Honey Water:

@Matt: Me, too. Quick and crisp so every syllable was understood. A nice departure from her usual heavenly sweetness.
Fri. 8/24/12 12:52pm Matt from Springfield:

Wow Doug, that means there's forty-something "Caravan" Steinski episodes left to go!
  Fri. 8/24/12 12:52pm Carmichael:

I'm thinking Steinski does nothing halfway.
Fri. 8/24/12 12:52pm Matt from Springfield:

@Carm: Steinski-or-Nothing.
Avatar    Fri. 8/24/12 12:53pm Doug Schulkind:

@Matt
Reminds me of the movie "The Shoot Deejays, Don't They" about the Caravan marathon.
Fri. 8/24/12 12:53pm listener james from westwood:

i can only imagine esquivel took a swing at this perennial hit.
  Fri. 8/24/12 12:54pm Honey Water:

Yeah, Steinski's self-evaluation could only include "perfectionist" on the downside.
  Fri. 8/24/12 12:55pm Honey Water:

Oh, Esquivel! LJfW, only found him through (hope I'm right here) Rex Doane's program.
Fri. 8/24/12 12:57pm Matt from Springfield:

@Doug: That would be 40 Steinski "Caravan" episodes aired back-to-back, with Glen Jones on Air providing commentary between each one.
  Fri. 8/24/12 12:57pm Honey Water:

NOOO, wrong. :[ Esquerita from Rex.
Avatar    Fri. 8/24/12 12:58pm Doug Schulkind:

Lamentably, no Esquivel in this show...
Fri. 8/24/12 12:59pm listener james from westwood:

irwin chusid's archives are the first place i'd look for an esquivel cut.
Fri. 8/24/12 12:59pm listener james from westwood:

i believe in a world where esquivel and esquerita are playing the same hall.
  Fri. 8/24/12 1:00pm Honey Water:

Strange no caraVan in DC today. More's the pita.

Thanks, Steinski and proxy Doug for a lovely lunch hour!

Have good and safe weekends all!
Avatar    Fri. 8/24/12 1:01pm Doug Schulkind:

Was that "hall" or "hell," LJFW?
  Fri. 8/24/12 1:01pm Honey Water:

I thought of that, too, Doug. :)
Fri. 8/24/12 1:03pm Matt from Springfield:

Definitely a good melody, this episode was like all these bands together on the same stage, one taking over from the next and keeping the jam going!

Thanks Doug! Thanks Steinski! Have a great weekend, everyone!
Fri. 8/24/12 1:04pm Van in DC:

Archive listen for me too
Fri. 8/24/12 1:05pm Van in DC:

Honey Water - had to do my daily walk and get food...lamb over rice with side of salad and chick peas, and a kiwi strawberry juice drink :)
Fri. 8/24/12 1:06pm listener james from westwood:

thanks for the caravan of "caravan"s, doug!
  Fri. 8/24/12 1:06pm northguineahills:

Thanks Doug! See you next week and have a great weekend!
Avatar    Fri. 8/24/12 1:06pm Doug Schulkind:

Had fun everyone. Have brilliant weekends!
  Fri. 8/24/12 1:07pm still b/p:

Caramba! Ca-rap! Caravaggio! Missed 99% of the Caravan show. Must caravindicate self in archive too.
