Street interviews, listener call-ins, vinyl gluttery, sporadic normalcy, original floperas and fiktion, blatant talking over songs, politix, tenderness, and a vague undercurrent of angst. Right up your alley!

Options August 16, 2012: Dusty Half-Baked - Interviews - 11 Flea Market Finds

Listen to this show: Pop-up listen Pop‑up player!

Artist Track Album Label Year Format Comments Approx. start time
Lake  Into The Night   Options Paradise Island  Columbia  1979  LP  The Lake song, Time Bomb, appeared on Clay's Classics II (marathon premium).  0:00:00 (Pop‑up)
This was my 5th show on FMU in two weeks - A fill-in for Irene, two fill-ins for Christ T. and two Dusty Shows. I didn't have much time to assemble it, so I took raw interview segments recorded Weds., August 15th at Madison Square Garden, and mixed them live with these LP cuts, obtained at Skippy's Flea Market in Hamden, NY, and at Marco's Flea Market in Walton, NY. I also had the occasion to attend the Delaware County Fair in Walton with my wife. A most enjoyable day of cows, horses, pancakes, and sun.
An Interview with Frank, Mgr. of the Dunkin Donuts at Penn Station, NYC.
I am actually appalled at the proliferation of Dunkin' Donuts stores everywhere, though I occassionally succomb to a donut (Blueberry Cake, Boston Creme).
Dead AIr
Gib Sage  Believing Things   Options   Stop  1972  45  I was surprised to see this 45, mostly because it was on the Stop label out of Nashville, and I had only seen this label once before, on a 45 by Ron Photo (Feauto) an obscure and now deceased singer from my little hometown of Audubon, Iowa. I figured Gib abd Ron were label-mates and perhaps they knew each other. That was such an incredible time of musical discovery in my life. Sentimental me.
An Interview with Two Union Workers in front of Madison Square Garden, 7th Ave, NYC.
Two Rich Clowns
USA All The Way!
DJ Moment
Burgess Meredith  Everyman (Excerpt)   Options Everyman - A Moral Play  Caedmon  ?  LP  Read about Everyman here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Everyman_(play)
An Interview with Heather and her Mother from Staunton, VA.
Rebel Daughter
Big Dream for the Future
Welcome to NY!
DJ Moment - Salute to the Accuplaylist Visitors
Brady Kids  Drummer Man   Options The Kids From the Brady Bunch  Paramount  1972  LP  Funniest Accuplaylist comment: "That's Bobby on drums!" I don't think so.
An Interview with Donald
A Mess ... a Mess!
Too Much Freedom
Secretive, Burnt-Out ... Bon Jovi
Scott Williams Mention ... BoxerTalk
Boxer  No Reply   Options Absolutely  Epic  1977  LP  Many of these LP's were found outside at Marco's Flea Market, where they had been enduring rain, sun, and sleet for some time.
Note: I am just playing segments of these songs in many cases. If you like them, I encourage you to seek out the full-length versions.
Interview with an Un-named PR Woman
I Could Lose This Job (Lose Yours? dusty@wfmu.org)
Talking with Fabio ... the Lord of Pleasure
Pleasure  Selim   Options Joyous  Fantasy  1977    Liked this
A Mention of the Upcoming DUEL Between Fabio and Clay Pigeon - Weds., August 30th. Just Two Weeks Away. Beginning at 4:30 EST. Don't Miss It!!!!
Interview with an Anonymous Passerby
Obama and Homicides
Family  Part of the Load   Options Anyway  United Artists  1971  LP  Really dig this LP. More to come.
Many of these LP's I found this week were marked 'WONY' - and evidently were jettisoned by this radio station, operated on the campus of the State University of New York in Oneonta. Their loss ... our GAIN! Love it.
An Interview with Tony, who "sells stuff."
A Tremendous Chris Christie Fan
Dime Store Charlatan
Subtonal  Fever (Subtonal RMX)   Options Semitones In Darkness  Elektrolux/Mikrolux  2002  12"  This artist was incorrectly identified as Mikrolux, which is actually the record label. My fault. The artist is actually, Subtonal, alias, Andreas Kauffelt. I find it difficult sometimes to identify artists, labels, song names, and song speeds on modern vinyl. It is almost as if the artists wish to keep things cloaked in mystery, or else I am just getting old and lack the contemporary deciphering skills to figure it out. This being said, I picked up about ten LP's worth of this stuff in the past couple of days at my neighborhood Goodwill, where some disenchanted Bristish DJ had apparently dumped them. His/her loss ... our gain!
Paul Williams  My Fair Share   Options A Little On The Windy Side  Portrait  1979  LP  Check out the JUne 14th Episode of The Dusty Show for an interview with Paul Williams ... always welcome.
An Interview with Shana from Minnesota
Interloper Compares Shana to Katie Couric!
Our Fine City
That "Fargo" Accent
The New York Rock & Roll Ensemble  Dance of the Dogs   Options Reflections  ATCO  1970  LP  Music composed by Manos Hadjidakis
An Interview with Janette
Obama Quits!
EMAIL ME Immediately ........ dusty@wfmu.org
Strange Dusty
Walter Brennan  The Farmer and the Lord   Options Old Rivers  Liberty  1962  LP  Reminds me of Iowa. Sigh.
Rain and the Umbrella Man
An Interview with Chris - Construction Worker - Mohawk
Holding On To Heritage
High-Altitude Work
Do YOU Love America? Are YOU Hopeful for the Future? dusty@wfmu.org
Constant Redbone
Mohawk Farewell
Magic Mike - The Pick of Destiny
Sweetwater  My Crystal Spider   Options Sweetwater  Warner/Reprise    LP  Interesting reading from WIKI ----- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweetwater_(band)
Cy Coleman  Reverie In Topaz   Options The Ages of Rock  MGM    LP  Outro music during farewell banter with S(Andy).
Thanks for listening to this episode my friend. It was a bit haphazard ... a bit, 'half-baked,' as it were. There isn't always the time to produce shows the way I want to with all the hyper-editing, etc. I do what I can.

I also wanted to mention Occupy Wall Street, as I notice from time to time it is brought up on the Accuplaylist. I followed it pretty intensely during the zenith of the movement from last September until the beginning of the summer, but when the energy wained and the numbers dropped off, I guess I, too, fell out. I have been monitoring it to see if it gels again, or if it will be a catalyst for some new movement. Certainly, I would step in again if it appears to move the needle a bit more on the public consciousness scale. IN the meantime, I have been concerning myself with other issues. Politics, social concerns, and just everyday life. Getting back on the streets to talk to everyday people. I hope you enjoy it. Please feel free to send me any thoughts you have on the show or the world in general. I am always happy to get your input.

Summer is blazing by so fast. Can't believe it's almost over. Such is life ... like sand through the hourglass ... hope you are having a good time out there. Until next week ... take care and ....

OH, wait! I almost forgot! Don't forget the DUEL with Fabio and I, coming up in two weeks. I plan on taking him to the cleaners!

Always remember!

  6:05pm Carmichael:

Hey Clay, what it be bro.
  6:05pm kata:

...and ever'boday !
  6:06pm Matt from Springfield:

Lake was from '79? Shucks, I wanted to comment that the people in the picture on the main page are probably digging that selection--but '79 is WAY to late for those clothes!
  6:06pm kat330:

Him, Kata & OD! I Don't Believe You, Clay (about the FMU ratings you were feeding Fabio ;).
  6:06pm Julian:

In Baltimore along I95 you can catch a whiff of donuts near exit 50. I love America.
  6:06pm Matt from Springfield:

Kat! OD! Cecile! Kata! Carmichael!
Avatar 6:07pm Clay:

Lots of knob twiddling to do. Hey guys.
  6:07pm sfrances:

howdy y'all!
I'll miss the show live for the next 2 weeks: will be back visiting PDX
  6:07pm kata:

smelling donuts is sometimes better than the eating.
  6:07pm Night Al:

The Pidge is too busy to comment today...live show he's mixing.
  6:07pm Philo Gristle:

Hey Gang!
  6:09pm kat330:

[that was meant to be HI, Kata & OD!] Typos all in a rush trying to complete dinner and listen.
  6:09pm Timb:

Greetings from Fort Lauderdale! Dark show you did on Tuesday. Also, my friend just turned me on to "That Dirty Clown". Fantastic music and storytelling. So dark! Clay, hope you have a great show today!
  6:09pm kat330:

Hi back, Matty Mensch!
  6:09pm Night Al:

One last chapter to read in Keith Richard's autobiography "Life". He was a master junkie.
  6:11pm Night Al:

Greg Allman's "My Cross To Bear" is on the table ready to go after Keef.
  6:11pm sfrances:

Virginia representing on the street, for better or worse
  6:12pm Matt from Springfield:

Staunton! Pronounced "Stan-tin"!

Hi frances, Al, Philo, all newcomers!
  6:14pm Philo Gristle:

Having a brain freeze trying to recall a great rock'n'roll autobio.... wanted to read Iggy's book way back when it first came out but never did.
  6:14pm Matt from Springfield:

At she acknowledges her inconsistencies...sounds like she's using Romney as a protest vote--although if she's voting in VA, that's no mere symbolic vote; this is a Swing State y'know.
  6:15pm Matt from Springfield:

Virginia shout out!
  6:15pm seang:

funk it up
  6:15pm sfrances:

Hooray for The Brady Kids, great music to pay bills to...;)
  6:17pm John McCabe in LA:

hi Clay i finally got a job
  6:17pm kata:

I really liked "Rotten: No Irish, No Blacks, No Dogs" but I have a major soft spot for Johnny.
  6:17pm Alice:

That's Bobby on drums.
  6:17pm Andrew Waterloo:

Hey everyone
  6:17pm moose:

hi everybody and matt from springfield and clay, i dozed off during fabio and wowee did this ever wake me up
  6:17pm Danne D:

Yay it's Clay :)

Btw, Clay I couldn't say so during your Chris T fill-in, but I couldn't help but note your choice of Emerson Lake and Powell's version of "Mars the Bringer of War"
  6:18pm kata:

congrats John McCabe in LA !!
  6:18pm sfrances:

Suspicious Bon Jovi!
  6:19pm John McCabe in LA:

  6:19pm kat330:

Kata, did I read you were baking baguettes? For you and significant other?

Yes, congrats, John! Your gain is our Show Barn's loss. :)
  6:20pm hamburger:

just saw a video from andy cohen's tumblr 'ultimate romney flip flop compilation' - worth checking out
  6:21pm Philo Gristle:

@kata It's hard to get a warts-and-all from an autobio, but I suspect Johnny could do it if anyone. Sort of would like to read Johnny Ramone's new book (speaking of politics), but kind of dread the idea just as much.
  6:21pm Matt from Springfield:

Hooray John!
What are you doing now?
  6:22pm Matt from Springfield:

And hey moose!
Clay gets your attention, for sure!
  6:23pm John McCabe in LA:

i work for a document scanning service i make pdf's
  6:24pm Phillip in San Antonio:

Hello all! Good story on the Tuesty Show the other day.
  6:25pm Marmalade Kitty:

Hello Clay, listeners!! :)
  6:25pm Phillip in San Antonio:

This guy sounds like a goof.
  6:25pm other david:

... interesting logic.
  6:26pm Night Al:

McCartney's latest biography was interesting. "A Life".
  6:26pm other david:

Hey MK!
  6:26pm Fredericks:

Obama is committing a lot of homicides?
Avatar 6:26pm Clay:

Frantic. Love your commentz
  6:27pm sfrances:

I joined the ranks of the unemployed a couple of weeks ago, but happily so!! And will remain happily so for a couple of months.
  6:27pm Matt from Springfield:

Hi Kitty!
  6:27pm Frantic:

  6:28pm John McCabe in LA:

more Brady Kids!!
  6:28pm Matt from Springfield:

Re: the previous interviewee: Now you would think the Principal from Beavis & Butthead would be more traumatized by dumbasses, than African-Americans... :D
  6:28pm Marmalade Kitty:

I discovered this great little film: The American Dream..
  6:29pm Fredericks:

Why won't the media report on Obama's killing spree?
  6:29pm Danne D:

'grats on the employment John McCabe :)
  6:29pm kat330:

Well, Night Al, I count three Putty Kats in this here beautiful pea green boat, a.k.a. the Dusty Show.
  6:30pm Seamus:

Don't roof rack me bro!
  6:30pm Fredericks:

Why doesn't spell-check recognize Obama's name?
  6:31pm Matt from Springfield:

Now, re: the Paul Ryan fan, very good point, in whether we will have to accept a lower standard of living: "We already have". That's the truth! I don't know what we can do about it, in the short-term anyway.
  6:31pm Danne D:

I'm not a fan of Romney or his Grizwaldian tendencies but "now the brown's coming down" was a bit much on that Devo track.
  6:31pm John McCabe in LA:

the spell check industry is anti obama
  6:33pm Danne D:

This guy wants to sleep with Cher?
  6:33pm david:

howdy dusters... joining in a bit late but happy to be here...
  6:33pm Matt from Springfield:

@John: Fantastic! I create PDFs every day in my job, so I shall say welcome to the Adobe-verse! :)
@Fredericks: Turn off spell check on your browser! Doesn't do me any good on the Net anyway, so many mis-spelled words.
  6:33pm Philo Gristle:

I wish spell-check would recognize my (real) name. A good politically active friend during Bushwack years wrote me an email changing it (Juha) to Jihad...
  6:33pm Philo Gristle:

Stream just cut off....
  6:33pm sfrances:

oh my, Paul Williams,"sleep with me if you dare". ack!
  6:34pm kat330:

@Philo: And we've no doubt been monitored and on some sort of suspect list ever since. :{
  6:34pm kata:

@kat330 - yes and I just put the baguettes in the oven ! so I am in and out of here a bit... and yes I'll be sharing them with my bf. I'm definitely a novice baker.

what are you making for dinner ?
  6:34pm Philo Gristle:

Paul Williams will always be Swan to me.
  6:36pm sfrances:

"spinning around and vomiting"
  6:36pm Fredericks:

Thanks for the tip, Matt.
"Grizwaldian tendencies" is a pretty great band name.
  6:36pm kat330:

@kata: Excellent! (sorry for the "subterfuge"... just considering any angle for matchmaking on these boards for a couple of mensch. :)
  6:38pm Philo Gristle:

@Matt @John Pdf's in adobeverse? Check.
  6:38pm the glowing one:

dance for me! hahaha! c'mon colin! dance! dahahahance!
  6:38pm Night Al:

If Romney gets elected we'll all have to ride on the roof. Only multi-millionaires get to ride in the car.
  6:39pm Matt from Springfield:

Don't know what "Grizwaldian tendencies" are either, but the name kicks ass!
  6:39pm kata:

add me to the list of Adobe-worker bees...
  6:39pm david:

in some browsers you can highlight the word and click something to the tune of "add to dictionary" so it doesn't flag as misspelled.
  6:40pm kat330:

I liked the joke noting that Romney & Ryan have one significant and unique thing in commong: They both have driven vehicles with dogs on the roof.
  6:40pm Philo Gristle:

Griswaldian Tendencies = Chevy Chase
  6:41pm Matt from Springfield:

other david, and now the "vanilla" david joins us!
@Philo: Mostly Acrobat now, I was trained on Illustrator once upon a time ago.
  6:41pm Phillip in San Antonio:

So is the occupy movement dead now?
  6:41pm Seamus:

It certainly was not voluntary encopresis.
  6:42pm kata:

actually I'm in Portland OR Clay, I could never be a Californian !! :)
  6:43pm kat330:

@Seamus: You mean the Romney pooch?
  6:43pm Matt from Springfield:

Yeah, I was thinking "Clark Griswold"! Successful in business (like Romney), but also very clumsy, which I imagine Romney would be!
  6:43pm Night Al:

I have the RNC here in Tampa Bay in ten days.
  6:43pm kata:

[thanks for the shoutout though]
  6:44pm Phillip in San Antonio:

Mighty Dusty
  6:45pm Andrew Waterloo:

Clark Griswold is also that guy who took his family on several theme park rides while holding somebody at gun point
  6:45pm kat330:

Portland, kata? Do you hang out with Tony Coulter there?

And just scrolled back to see your din-din question: Sort of leftovers from a big grill fest. oak-plank chicken thighs, home-made potato salad (w/some chunks of grilled andouille) and string beans w/carrots.
  6:46pm kat330:

Yes, Clay -- always so kind of you the shoutouts! The most conscientious DJ on that score I'd say.
  6:46pm Philo Gristle:

I hate Illustrator, but have to use it daily since Freehand was killed & buried. Luckily I get to be a freehand illustrator on occasion.
  6:47pm Night Al:

Weatherman just said the 'feels like' temp is 104 degrees outside. I haven't turned the AC off full blast for months now.
  6:47pm Matt from Springfield:

@Night Al: Give your updates on this playlist that week, I think it runs Mon-Thu.
  6:47pm kata:

my baguettes are rising and golden ! I'm super excited..

No I don't know Tony Coulter, he lives here ?
  6:48pm Night Al:

@ Matt ....I'm secretly hoping a hurricane blows through that week.
  6:48pm kat330:

@david: [I'm WAY behind here!] Yes, we'd fix any such problem on OUR end. Unfortunately, our NYC friend who sent it did not.
  6:49pm kata:

I love Illustrator. I hated it before I truly learned how to use it.
  6:49pm kat330:

Kata, you should check out his Give the Drummer Radio program here. Tuesdays 12 - 3 pm eastern time. Or catch an archive if that's a bad time.

I have friends living outside of Portland in Warren.
  6:51pm Matt from Springfield:

@kata: Portland, OR! So very many FMUers there! Listeners like you, Adam and various others, but also DJs: Tony Coulter, Belinda & Hova, ricardo montalban (KBOO, fills in for Tony), tons of PDX!
  6:51pm kat330:

@Night Al: What region are you from? We've also had a brutal heat wave since first part of July. This weekend, however, *supposed* to cool down. We're in the Louisville KY area, the Indiana side of the Ohio R.
  6:51pm kata:

yeah I know some other fans of his show, but he's web-only I think
  6:52pm Night Al:

We have a state-of-the-art science lab on the surface of Mars. Monkeys smart now!
  6:52pm Philo Gristle:

Matthew Mahogany was really good in Frailty, and Dazed & Confused.
  6:52pm Phillip in San Antonio:

Neil Hamburger pops up in "Tenacious D, the Pick of Destiny"
  6:53pm Night Al:

any song that starts off with a Wurly is OK in my book!
  6:53pm kat330:

Never mind, Al. Scrolled backwards and see Tampa. Arrggh.
  6:54pm Matt from Springfield:

Sweetwater played early in Woodstock--they may have been the first scheduled band, but due to crowds and traffic no one was at the stage except for Richie Havens--and the rest is history.

"Stillwater" was an actual band of the day, that was kind of expropriated for the "Almost Famous" movie. Excellent movie though!
  6:54pm kat330:

Right, Philo! We both quite liked "Frailty" -- Peter Pan kid (from KY, no less), Jeremy Sumter, delivered a great line: "He's a demon."
  6:55pm Marmalade Kitty:

this track, who is it? It great :)
  6:55pm the glowing one:

they sound like an even trippier version of Jefferson Airplane
  6:55pm Matt from Springfield:

Dazed and Confused! Really young Matthew "Mahogany", and a bully Ben Affleck!
Avatar 6:56pm Clay:

Thanks for listening everyone. This Dusty was Half-Baked, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. A 'normal' show next week, then a 2 1/2 hour duel with Fabio in two-weeks, starting at 4:30! Have a great weekend. Always remember ... dusty@wfmu.org
  6:56pm duke:

Bye...gotta go...great show
Avatar 6:56pm Clay:

MArmalade, this is Stillwater.
  6:56pm kata:

omg my baguettes are out of the oven and they look awesome!
  6:56pm Night Al:

@kat330 ....my grandpa's grandpa is buried on a KY mountain called The Breaks near Pikeville. There's a historical marker as his headstone.
  6:56pm Danne D:

When I think of Mitt Romney I think of this:
  6:56pm david:

sounds a lot like Gracie
  6:57pm kat330:

Thank YOU, Clay! Night all!
  6:57pm seang:

great show dude
  6:57pm Marmalade Kitty:

ya, sounds lot like Jefferson Airplane/united states of america
  6:57pm sfrances:

thanks so much, Clay! Will miss the duel live (will be on plane returning from PDX). Always Remember!
  6:57pm Bas, NL:

Thanks for the show Clay!
  6:58pm Danne D:

Thanks for a great show, Clay :)

And hiya Bas :)

Take care everyone :)
  6:58pm Philo Gristle:

Fully baked, with a soft crust! Will re-member. Thanks listeners, and many thanks Clay!
  6:58pm kat330:

@kata: Bon appetit!
  6:58pm other david:

real enjoyable show Clay - as ever! - thanks!

Nice seeing you all too :)
  6:59pm Matt from Springfield:

Awesome show, once again!
Thanks Clay! Have a good night everyone! Don't forget to remember!
  6:59pm Bas, NL:

Hi Danne D! ;)
  6:59pm kat330:

@Philo: You talking about baguettes or Clay's program? ;)
  6:59pm other david:

Remember not to forget!
  7:00pm Philo Gristle:

@Kat That would be telling!

@OD wasn't that a Charlie Feathers song??
