Street interviews, listener call-ins, vinyl gluttery, sporadic normalcy, original floperas and fiktion, blatant talking over songs, politix, tenderness, and a vague undercurrent of angst. Right up your alley!

I began to have trouble with my micro-cassette recorder at this point. Loss of treble here and there. This is why, in the editing process, I went to a format of asking the question after the fact, and then dubbing in the interview subject's response. Later on the problem clears up a bit. This is probably the end-of-the-line for this particular micro-cassette unit. I have another in the bullpen, but Radio Shack has discontinued the model I have used since 1998, and they are getting hard to find. The "Dusty" sound comes from these little $29 units. Who knows when I'll have to find a new "sound." Kind of sad.
An Interview with Mark Along 5th Avenue in Manhattan as Onlookers Await a Glimpse of the President's Motorcade.

In addition to micro-cassette troubles, there is the ongoing struggle of differing rates of tape speed from one cassette unit to the other. As I've mentioned before, I often have to monitor the tape speed control of WFMU's studio cassette deck to compensate for tape speed differences with my home unit. I tend to get 'chipmunk' voices (sped-up) and I have to slow them down manually. As the tape continues to roll, this rate will change at different rates. It varies also from 60 to 90-minute cassettes. Naturally, this effects music as well, and during songs I have to make sure they are not too fast or slow. Sometimes I fail. All in the interest of keeping the "sound" you seem to favor over the digital recording. Strange. I have a rather expensive Sony digital recorder, but I still use the $29 Radio Shack unit. Hope to keep using one!

That's it for another Dusty Show everybody. Thanks for listening. I've really been enjoying your Accu-Playlist comments and emails. If you'd like to drop me a line ---- dusty@wfmu.org

I know I sometimes overdo the politics, but with an election upcoming, I'll probably keep doing it. I'll try to keep mixing in other topics and music along the way. Also have to figure out my micro-cassette sitch. People always say "why don't you go digital or just use some other kind of micro-cassette, but I have become rather obsessively attached to the one's I use. Whatever. I'll figure something out.

I hope life is treating you well and that you've been having a good summer. I really appreciate your continued listening, support and loyalty. It matters to me. Quite honestly, these shows are a ton of work, but it's a labor of love most of the time, and being an FMU DJ is a privilige I dn't take lightly. So ... until next time, keep on rocking and always remember.

Ready to get down, in and amongst the commenters!
Avatar 6:04pm Clay:

Not too many of them so far, Matt.
  6:04pm Caryn:

Hello all!
Avatar 6:05pm Clay:

Hi Caryn!
  6:05pm Matt from Springfield:

And the Street Sixteen!
Giving the Dusty Show its essential sound, and cleaning up the streets of NYC at the same time! (Glad those roving street record collectors didn't give you trouble...)
  6:05pm Caryn:

Hi Clay! And Matt!
  6:05pm Night Al:

Greetings from Florida!
  6:05pm Matt from Springfield:

Hi Caryn!
  6:06pm Matt from Springfield:

@Clay: You've played that Midnight Cowboy song as an instrumental before, haven't you?
Avatar 6:06pm Clay:

Hi Al!
Avatar 6:07pm Clay:

Not that particular version, Matt. There's probably 49of them.
Avatar 6:09pm Clay:

For the record, I really struggled with my micro-cassette recorder this week. Treble drop-off, tape speed issues. It made editing very difficult. On top of that, I have been asking too many of the same questions all the time. Revamp needed.
  6:10pm Matt from Springfield:

@Clay: Ah, but it IS a version of it. Wondered where that tune came from.

Was there audio problems with your half of the interview? Or is that a new thing you're trying, re-dubbing your questions between the answers?
  6:10pm Timb:

Hi Clay! Greetings again from Florida. The Dusty Show is always the highlight of any Thursday workday for me. Break a leg!
Avatar 6:11pm Clay:

Hey Timbo!
  6:11pm Night Al:

You're a brave man walking around NYC not only making eye contact, but asking people questions about politics! Be careful with the wackos.
Avatar 6:11pm Clay:

Correct Matt, that;s why I did that.
  6:13pm dale:

listening in the hudson valley mr. pigeon
  6:14pm Matt from Springfield:

This is actually quite nice. Nilsson's original demos are usually worth the listen.
Avatar 6:14pm Clay:

Thanks Dale> Heading up tomorrow. Went to the Frederic Church Museum recently. Great exhibition.
  6:14pm Matt from Springfield:

HCQ = "High Celebrity Quotient"
  6:14pm Caryn:

If you need a revamp, Clay, you could take advantage of the olympics and ask obscure sports questions. "So, who do you think is going to win in the dressage event?"
  6:16pm Caryn:

Oh, come on, Bono, there were way worse haircuts!
Avatar 6:16pm Clay:

I need to do a 'Summer" show.
Avatar 6:16pm Clay:

Hopefully not Romney, Caryn.
  6:17pm Matt from Springfield:

"He doesn't do well anywhere he goes, that guy." Quotable Quote! Mittens in a Nutshell!
  6:17pm Caryn:

True. Is his horse actually competing in the dressage, or is that just a joke I keep hearing?
  6:18pm Caryn:

@Matt: well, the Irish have a way with words. Always have, always will.
  6:18pm Timb:

Is that you playing the guitar, Clay? That was impressive!
  6:18pm Danne D:

Here to occupy the playlist :)
  6:19pm Matt from Springfield:

There's your next premium Clay: "Clay plays 70s mellow rock versions of classic musical numbers"
Avatar 6:19pm Clay:

It's Anne's horse, and I do really feel for Anne's medical condition. Yeah Timb, that was me.
Avatar 6:19pm Clay:

That's the bonus disc from CC4 Matt. Hi Danne D!
  6:20pm Matt from Springfield:

Hi Danne!
United - WFMU - will never be defeated!
  6:20pm Night Al:

Many Dusty Show listeners don't realize that Clay was a rock star from Florida once!
  6:21pm Danne D:

I'm fine if RomneyHorse wins a gold medal. USA! USA!
  6:21pm Rafalka:

I'm there for Anne -- not Mitt.
  6:22pm Caryn:

El WFMU unido jamás será vencido!
  6:22pm Matt from Springfield:

Yeah Clay, last night EFD went in his Deloris time machine and pulled out one of your own classics! :)
  6:22pm Danne D:

Yup, Mitt ain't even watching. And if it helps Anne deal with her MS that's fine by me.
  6:22pm RuralJim:

Any plans for another dueling DJs show?
  6:22pm Rafalka:

Colbert poked fun of me, and I say neeeeiiiiggghh! He's a whinny.
  6:23pm Matt from Springfield:

Great command of languages, Caryn!

Kiss my ass, Rafalka.
Avatar 6:25pm Clay:

Hey Hey Paula!
  6:25pm Caryn:

Oh, Boris. If you had just stuck with this and not gone on that zipline... we wouldn't have as much humour in our lives. So thanks for that!
  6:26pm Night Al:

Herb Alpert and Michael Franks with Lani Hall perform on Saturday, March 2 at 7:30 pm. Rmoney, producing "locker room quotes" to America's detriment!
Remember how Dubya & Co used to churn those out? You can have those again with Rmoney!!
  6:27pm Romney's Press Sec'y:

@Night Al: Under what name / stage name in Florida and elsewhere?
  6:27pm Matt from Springfield:

Someone was throwing THAT away?! I LOVE this one, one of the Blue Notes/Teddy Pendergrass very best.

Recently John Legend and The Roots did a fairly faithful cover of this.
  6:28pm Night Al:

@ Romney's Press Sec'y.... Clay'll have to tell ya if he wants.
  6:30pm Romney's Press Sec'y:

Guess so.
  6:33pm Night Al:

I watched my cousin rehearse with the Blue Notes for a month in his living room...
  6:33pm Matt from Springfield:

@RPS: Ahem. There's hint above, if you'd research the links us helpful commenters post ;)
  6:35pm Matt from Springfield:

Heh, Night Al! In that case I'm probably the 7 billionth Beatle. None of my material has been released...

  6:38pm Romney's Press Sec'y:

Why the need for a detective hunt?
  6:38pm Night Al:

Seriously Matt...I had 'The Love I Lost' stuck in my head for months.
  6:38pm Matt from Springfield:

Rmoney!! It's official now! ;)
  6:39pm Caryn:

Unfortunately, too many Everest climbers nowadays are tourists who are dragged up and down the mountain with tons of oxygen tanks. They don't train, they don't climb properly, and they risk the lives of others so they can say "I climbed Everest." No you didn't, you were carried up and down the damn mountain!
Avatar 6:40pm Clay:

"If You Don't Know Me By Now," is a favorite Harold Melvin tune of mine.
Avatar 6:41pm Clay:

this is like guy and ralna on lawrence welk singing one toke over the line.
  6:42pm Matt from Springfield:

That's true Clay, and everyone DID record "Wichita Lineman" in 67/68!
Your next task is to find a school choir record where they sing "Wichita Lineman"! Hmm, maybe Irwin will find one!

I suddenly feel like I'm a kid in the back of my dad's car.
  6:47pm JohnEBGood:

Hey Clay, Love your show. I was in 10th grade in 1975 at Ferris HS in Downtown JC when I saw the Stones in 75 at the Garden. The Ohio Players "Fire" was played before a 100 piece steel band opened up and played a set including the great Scott Joplin song "The Entertainer" that was popular then for its role in the classic movie "The Sting. " Were you at the show?
  6:48pm other david:

Matt. we fry everything, add copious amounts of salt and put cream on everything else :)
  6:48pm Caryn:

@Is it that everything is cooked until you can eat it by sucking it through a straw?
  6:48pm Night Al:

@ Rafalka... i'm curious what music you'll listen to and reminisce to when your over 50.... Green Day? Death Cab For Cutie?
  6:49pm paula pc:

Clay, what a sweet show today
  6:49pm Danne D:

  6:50pm Rafalka:

In human years, I'm well over 50 already. Hm, Patti Smith's Horses for one.
  6:50pm Steve Walsh:

I'm really NOT in Kansas anymore!!
  6:50pm Night Al:

YES is on tour...just played Florida.
  6:51pm Rafalka:

But probably Viennese waltzes to Piaf to.
  6:51pm Matt from Springfield:

Is Kansas prog though? Wiki describes them as such, but I really haven't explored their back catalog beyond their harder rock hits (and one big acoustic hit :)
  6:52pm Night Al:

@ Rafalka ... Oh..OK.. I saw patti around 1978 here in St Pete.. I was up front and she kept making eye contact with me... I'll never forget it.
  6:52pm Danne D:

Trump? Really.
  6:53pm Danne D:

Rafalka would be a better President than Trump.
  6:53pm Matt from Springfield:

@Caryn: At least historically that's how Irish cuisine was! Irish-American cuisine has been like that too, but in the last century I'm sure it's dramatically improved. Just what constitutes "modern Irish" cuisine I wonder about.
  6:53pm Rafalka:

In your night owl dreams! She has astigmatism and was looking at the dude to the right of you.
  6:53pm Danne D:

Rick James Bitch!

  6:56pm Danne D:

Good show Clay :)
  6:56pm Caryn:

To Clay and others: De pie, cantar que vamos a triunfar. Y así verás tu canto y tu vida florecer.

@Matt: true. Kidding aside, I like Irish food, especially the seafood. Incidentally, the best Spanish and Italian restaurants I've ever been to have both been in Ireland.
