Options Brian Turner: Playlist from June 19, 2012 Options

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

Michael Chapman  Live in the WFMU Studio   Options engineered by Jon Flores    Join Brian today as he welcomes one of the true elder statesmen of British folk guitar and songcraft, easily on the same tier as musical cousins Roy Harper, John Martyn and Bert Jansch though stylistically more in tune with Harper's psychedelicized leanings. Chapman visits the USA on the heels of a flurry of releases; he's recently had output on Ecstatic Peace and some excellent reissues of his Harvest label material via Light in the Attic. Tompkins Square Records also has releaed a 2CD anthology and a brand new tribute disc called "Oh Michael, Look What You've Done", featuring Chapman's songs reworked by Lucinda Williams, Meg Baird, Bridget St. John and more. He plays Zebulon on June 18th, and Union Pool in Brooklyn on June 22nd. Download this set via The Free Music Archive.    1:17:44 (Pop‑up)

  3:01pm Carmichael:

Hiya BT. Hi soon to be everyone.
  3:02pm Mike East:

Hey there, Carm, Brian
  3:02pm Hugh:

Gotta get the new Can! Hi BT! Looking forward to Mr Chapman also.
  3:02pm Cheri Pi:

Hey-I don't recognize this Can.
  3:03pm Dead Corporate Eyes:

hi guys and gals
  3:03pm Cheri Pi:

Mike East-didja get your swag??
  3:04pm northguineahills:

I was going to explain that these were Lost Can tapes, but the album title says it all...., wait I just did explain it....
  3:05pm Everyone:

I (we) are become!
  3:06pm Eeyore:

"everyone but me"
  3:06pm phat:

Holy cow! This is amazing.
  3:06pm Cheri Pi:

This is pretty badass.
  3:06pm Matt from Springfield:

Millionenspiel--a million games' worth of rock!
Hey Brian! How's everyone doing? Loving this Can!
  3:07pm Fat:

Holy cow! this pie is amazing!
  3:07pm Carmichael:

Yes we Can!
  3:07pm TJ:

Thanks for this. I also had not heard it and love me some Can.
  3:07pm Mike East:

not all of it - it was the best show premium from 2011...long overdue. It whet my appetite for much more to come, though!
  3:07pm Dead Corporate Eyes:

yes, but can we Yes?
  3:07pm Mike East:

that was @Cheri Pi
  3:07pm Cheri Pi:

More bands should lose then find their tapes again...
  3:08pm Dead Corporate Eyes:

more bands should have recorded constantly
  3:09pm Cheri Pi:

Well congrats anyway, I hope the WFMU fairy was in my mailbox today.
  3:10pm Mike East:

I feel like Ralphie waiting for his decoder pin sometimes. Its so exciting.
  3:10pm Carmichael:

Who Can Yes?
  3:11pm northguineahills:

@Cheri Pi: Sort of like that Mr. Show episode where they make an episode just to lose it so it can be found later in the future?
  3:11pm Sammy:

Yes, I Can, if Frank says it's OK.
  3:11pm Postmodern Politician:

Yes We Yes!
  3:12pm Matt from Springfield:

@Limo Driver: Hey, aren't you being kind of hard on Sammy?
  3:13pm Cheri Pi:

Well the best swag I ever received was my adopted son Brian Turner. The t-shirts, stickers, albums, dvds, soap, beachballs, thumb-drives, bottleopeners, posters, books, & 45 adapters are just gravy.
  3:13pm Cheri Pi:

exactly NGH!!!
  3:13pm Jon Anderson:

Don't Kill the Whale!
  3:14pm Matt from Springfield:

@NGH: Also, that was an incredible Mr. Show. I remember the body of the episode being great, but the framing device at the beginning and end was amazing!

(That was Paul F. Tompkins who recited "Footprints" to the episode's tape, holding back tears!)
  3:15pm Leonard Graves Philips:

Where'd His Eye Go?
  3:15pm Dead Corporate Eyes:

the screaming settled, the drums come up, now I can turn it up a notch
Avatar 3:15pm BT:

Thanks Cheri. Hi everybody. My premium is imminent!!! Thank you for your patience and of course support.
  3:15pm Matt from Springfield:

Cheri, are you Brian's adoptive parent/legal guardian for this year, or in years past? Congrats anyway! That's wonderful pride in this show, and the station as a whole!
  3:16pm Cheri Pi:

..the magnets, deck of cards, gloves, tote bag, baseball hat, credit in a movie-none of it compares to my BT.
  3:16pm Kim Jong illlll:

  3:17pm Carmichael:

I have plenty of both patience and coarse support.
  3:17pm Matt from Springfield:

Others have mentioned getting swag lately, so it's probably coming through the pipeline. Salivating with anticipation!
  3:17pm Cheri Pi:

Yes Matt i am! and he is surprisingly tidy and hasn't missed curfew yet.
  3:17pm Rodney:

Support, what are we brazzieres?
  3:18pm Matt from Springfield:

Hooray Cheri Pi! :)
  3:19pm Carmichael:

Rodney is just being coarse. I actually have fine support, a minimum of 150 grit.
  3:20pm Rodney:

How's yer fundament?
  3:21pm Marion Morrison:

that there's true grit, Carmichael.
  3:23pm Casey:

Keep your thumb in your fundament, and keep reaching for the stars.
  3:24pm Cheri Pi:

Oh Noes! Producer Gerry Bron passed away today. We're gonna need some Uriah Heep...
  3:27pm Van in DC:

I adopted Irene. Oh, and Kenzo too. I think.
  3:29pm Faye:

Oh god this Kilgour track
  3:31pm Snuggles:

Casey, thanks for the tribute. I will haunt you til your last breath...
  3:32pm Snuggles:

... dogs can type in heaven and we listen to WFMU.org!
  3:45pm Matt from Springfield:

Wow, great "Love Is"! Early 70s live recording?
  3:47pm Carmichael:

Love is Like Oxygen.
  3:47pm Dead Corporate Eyes:

Love is never having to say you're sorry?
  3:48pm Cole Porter:

Love for Sale.
  3:49pm Mike East:

Get A Job always reminds me of Melvin & Howard(s) from SCTV.
  3:49pm Carmichael:

Love is a Rose (but you better not pick it).
  3:51pm Eros:

Love is a four letter word.
  3:51pm Eros Myth:

Dream on
  3:52pm Matt from Springfield:

I heard once that "Love for Sale" was the first song to be banned over the US airwaves.
  3:55pm Eros:

in an elevator?
  3:57pm Sam I Am:

In a box, with a fox?
  4:00pm Dead Corporate Eyes:

on another subject...visiting Chicago soon (first time). Any good/weird music places to visit?
  4:02pm SteveL:

Hiskodetria's cover is pretty darned awesome.
  4:04pm Google:

  4:06pm paul b:

SteveL: Hiskodetria's cover is pretty darned awesome. :: Seconded!
  4:06pm tim from champaign:

DCE - Permanent Records is my favorite record store. The have a very BT selection of records. There are free Monday concerts (usually of interest) at Millenium Park in downtown. The Empty Bottle and The Hideout are my favorite places to see shows. Also, Kuma's Korner is a metal burger bar definitely worth seeking out. The Chicago Reader has pretty thorough music listings.
  4:07pm SteveL:

DCE: If you eat cheeseburgers, get to the Billy Goat Tavern at 200 N Michigan/lower. Delicious and bad for you. Just don't try to order fries. Also, beer is available.
  4:07pm northguineahills:

My favorite cover of "On the Road Again" is Sloan's "On the Road Again/Transona 5"
  4:07pm paula pc:

I always wanted a 15-min version of this...
  4:08pm Chris from DC:

These guys are great. Downloaded this after Liz B played them yesterday.
  4:09pm Chapel Hillian:

This remind anyone of Endless Boogie?
  4:10pm Puertoricarious:

@Chapel YESS! Was just thinking the same thing. A compliment of the highest order.
  4:12pm Matt from Springfield:

Ahhh, keep it goin', Hiskodetria!
  4:12pm phat:

this kicks ass! one advantage of being laid off: WFMU during the day!
  4:12pm Cheri Pi:

DCE- Dusty Groove has a lot of Ethio-jazz and such. Also-the all vinyl Dave's Records is a must visit www.davesrecordschicago.com/
  4:12pm Cheri Pi:

Yes Chapel Hillian Yes it does!
  4:14pm efd:

White Manna and Hiskodetria was a killer combo! Yoinks!
  4:14pm Dead Corporate Eyes:

cool, appreciate the tips. Will be there on a Sunday/Mon/Tues so maybe I'll catch one of them concerts.
  4:15pm Matt from Springfield:

Woooooo! Michael Chapman's back, LIVE live on WFMU!
  4:17pm Dead Corporate Eyes:

aw damn, missing the Sadies by 1 week at Millenium Park...
  4:18pm Michael Chapman's front:

hey, I'm here too!
  4:19pm Matt from Springfield:

Kate Bush did a breathtaking a capella version of the traditional "My Lagan Love", I imagine the unaccompanied "She Moved Through The Fair" would be kind of like that.
  4:20pm Matt from Springfield:

Then SHOW US your front and perform Michael! Don't show us your back until BT's show is over! ;)
  4:20pm Mike East:

Curious what kind of guitar he's playing. Sounds goddamn gorgeous.
  4:21pm paula pc:

really really really great
  4:21pm Joe B:

sounding great!
  4:31pm Mike East:

did he say what kind of guitar? I was on the phone.
  4:32pm Dead Corporate Eyes:

1952 Martin, I believe he said.
  4:34pm Mike East:

ooh. nice. Thanks Mr. Corporate Eyes.
  4:46pm Dead Corporate Eyes:

yes, forever, to the slide
  4:47pm Dead Corporate Eyes:

*desktop percussion ensues*
  4:52pm Matt from Springfield:

Latvian hymns--if only he'd sang and played some of those on guitar!
  5:03pm Mike East:

can't hear his voice!
  5:08pm paula pc:

can I get the name of this number please>>>
  5:11pm Matt from Springfield:

Actually BT, when Michael's finished could you type up and post his setlist?
  5:12pm paula pc:

THANKS for asking, Brian!!!
  5:18pm northguineahills:

This is so awesome! Too bad I didn't know about the Zebulon show last night.
  5:19pm Matt from Springfield:

Thank you Michael!
And thank you Brian, Jon, and WFMU!
  5:21pm paula pc:
