Curious. Did the subject of religion ever come up? Back in the mid 70s when my family could come over for the holidays I remember Ebbie sitting down at the table with a glass of Drambuie and a plate of pork roast. He looked up, then to his wife (my moms cousin Helga) and said "I'm a baaad muslim" before digging in.

While shopping for Filipino food, I came across rose water from UAE. My extended family really loved Turkish delight and rose cake. Yellow Dogs have very nice voices. I like to hear them.

@Gary: well, in the Philippines it's only been harassment and head shaving. The beatings and killings have been limited to the other two. A few months ago, several dozen emos (though some reports put the number as high 300) were rounded up and forcibly shaved by the authorities in the Philippines for supposedly "giving the nation a bad image". It does seem like in recent months, there's been more news of this kind.

Maybe I should clarify that harassment and head shaving also happens in the other two, but they ratchet up the abuse to actual violence and killing too.

As told to me by American teens, "Emo" is emotive, like theater, drama, and acting. It's exaggerating emotions, but more than emotions themselves. And it's more than wearing black.

And to tie in with the earlier discussion: "In 2008 "anti-emo" groups attacked teenagers in Mexico City, Querétaro, and Tijuana.
In Russia, a law was presented at the Duma to regulate emo websites and forbid emo style at schools and government buildings, for fears of emo being a "dangerous teen trend" promoting anti-social behaviour, depression, social withdrawal and even suicide.
In May 2010 in Saudi Arabia, the religious police in the city of Dammam arrested 10 emo girls for allegedly offensive un-Islamic behaviour and dress. In March 2012 reports by human rights activists suggested that, in a single month, Shia militias in Iraq had shot or beaten to death up to 58 young Iraqi emos.

The muslim minority is mostly in the south near Davao , but they're scattered about. I met one or two in Manila. I'm surprised by the shaved heads. Not sure it's connected to muslim extremism or simply conservative Filipinos.
