Live performance and chat with guitarist Kevin Kastning and sax/flute player Carl Clements
For a number of years Kevin Kastning has been turning acoustic guitar playing inside out. Sonic landscapes populate his music, with microtonal overlays of tones and textures. The Massachusetts-based Kastning also favors collaborations that mesh into musical other-ness, such as his discs with Hungarian guitarist Sándor Szabó and one with U.K guitarist Mark Wingfield last year. His latest two are "Tryptich," which features a trio with Szabó and Balázs Major, and "Dreaming as I Knew," with saxophonist/flutist Carl Clements. And there's another new one due June with bassist Michael Manring. Kevin Kastning played live on this show with Carl Clements.

Listener comments!

  12:01pm Sean in Bristol, UK:

Hey Irene, good afternoon to you and all your wonderful listeners
  12:03pm Mark Williams:

nice to know someone in Bristol is listening in (I'm in Washington, DC). Lovely piece to open up with as well.
  12:05pm Van in DC:

Happy Monday Irene. Hi fellow listeners & DC'ers! :)
  12:18pm robyn:

digging the music and the pink.
  12:21pm Matt from Springfield:

DC'ers in the house!
Also digging Jenny Hval and the (upcoming May Day) pink.
  12:30pm mark:

John McLaughlin on the banjo! Thank you Irene!
  12:30pm Dafydd:

A sweet tune by John McLaughlin - perfect!!!
  12:32pm Sean in Bristol, UK:

Oh wow, John Mclaughlin, just wonderful, wonderful as is the rest of this beautiful set.
  12:33pm Van in DC:

Wonderful lead-in set Irene.
  12:36pm dc pat:

ok, where were we with the soccer? I--oh, sorry...
  12:37pm dc pat:

DC! BSI's out there somewhere too, also in our nation's colony
  12:37pm Dafydd:

I'm sticking around!
  12:40pm northguineahills:

Cool, Digging this Steven Smith.
  12:41pm 1mckrs:

Hello to Irene from East Hampton. Did you know the wind often shifts right about the time your show starts and blows in off the ocean? I realized today that if my window is open and I am not looking at the clock, that's how I know to tune in. True.
  12:43pm Matt from Springfield:

@1mckrs: The "wind-dial" option.
Does it work like that in every season?
  12:45pm Van in DC:

Yeah, I hear there's a pretty big soccer game being played today ;) (I so wish I could skip out of work early...)
  12:46pm Sean in Bristol, UK:

@Van, are you on about the Manchester Derby?
  12:47pm 1mckrs:

@Matt: it's rather dependable, except when there's real 'weather' of one sort of another. The sun heats up the land, the wind comes up, and Irene goes on. Something like that.
  12:48pm Dafydd:

Are you saying Irene is full of wind?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm Irene:

Hi Everybody! Finally finished soundchecking Kevin Kastning and Carl Clements. They have a beautiful set planned for you all.
  12:50pm Van in DC:

@Sean - yes, exactly so :)
  12:53pm dc pat:

I'm disallowing myself to participate in soccer talk as I took up a good chunk of LizB's board with it. However, I'm outta here at 2:30, and it ain't because I'm going to the dentist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Irene:

So, I'm sounding a little airey-fairy today? ;D
  12:55pm Van in DC:

Don't go to an ex-GF dentist, anyway ;)
  12:59pm robyn:

this is really lovely.
  12:59pm dc pat:

oh man, I would so have it made if I had an ex-GF dentist. Wait, what?
  12:59pm Matt from Springfield:

@1mckrs: Dependable natural clock! Like it.
  12:59pm Cheryl:

Hi Irene! We are sitting by the computer enjoying, waiting for Kevin and Carl.
Cicely, Spencer and Cheryl
  1:01pm Van in DC:

@dc pat - did you see the story today of the ex-GF pulling out ALL of the teeth of the guy that dumped her? Wow.
  1:08pm Dafydd:

Irene, the music is airey and soothing not the DJ, that doesn't sound right either.
  1:16pm Sean in Bristol, UK:

@ DC Pat and Van, now I don't want the message board to get all sporty but surely you must be going into a lather with how The Nats are playing at the moment.
  1:20pm Van in DC:

@Sean - lovely ballpark they have, I enjoy going there and cheering the opposition ;) (I'm an Atlanta Braves / Texas Rangers fan)
  1:22pm Chris from DC:

They need some offense badly though, Sean. The pitching has been lights out at least. We'll see how Harper works out. As a long-suffering Orioles fan I couldn't be happier so far this season. Ok, done with baseball geeking out.
  1:23pm v k:

MLB does not issue rings for best record at month-end April
  1:25pm Nats and Os:

Beisbol bin bery, bery bad to me
  1:28pm Chris from DC:

Yup, nor do I expect rings in October, VK. But if they can start beating the Yankees and Red Sox more, who knows, the O's could at least be in the mix. Long way to go.
  1:31pm Van in DC:

Note to Kevin: The Wichita State Wiki page is missing somebody in its "Notable Alumni" section. :)

Enjoying the live set
  1:33pm dc pat:

Van: oh, I get it now. yee!
  1:35pm dc pat:

ick. not a baseball guy. I live in shear terror that my son will get interested in baseball....
  1:37pm Van in DC:

Hey dc pat, you realize of course that by skating out early, you're going to miss an epic Jim Price show, right? :)
  1:38pm Carmichael:

I'm getting a new work computer here in a few hours. I could be missing a LOT!
  1:39pm dc pat:

huh. well if I ride fast, I can listen to Jim too. Timing has to be perfect though...
  1:39pm Van in DC:

The Manchester Derby...hmm, I'm rooting in whatever result leaves them tied atop the table ha ha
  1:40pm dc pat:

that would be a Man City win. Say what DOES happen if they end the season tied?
  1:45pm Bailey:

Kevin's name IS among the Wichita East High notable alumni. PS: Hi Kevin, from your cousin Bailey.
  1:45pm paula pc:

so beautiful today, Irene...thank you to you and your guests!!
  1:47pm dc pat:

"If there is a tie for the championship, for relegation, or for qualification to other competitions, a play-off match at a neutral venue decides rank." Come on CITY!
  1:50pm Van in DC:

Yeah, I was wondering if the composing for violin parts is also done on piano?
  1:51pm Van in DC:

Wow, I don't like the sound of that act at all. I wouldn't risk my instrument at customs either.
  1:53pm jb in orlano:

beautiful music! thank you.
  1:57pm Van in DC:

Thanks to Kevin and Carl for stopping in! Enjoyed their multi-talented playing for us.
  2:03pm Matt from Springfield:

Very good compositions, nice meandering set. Thanks Kevin and Carl!
  2:07pm Cheryl in MA:

Sounds great! Miles has been singing along.
Thanks for sharing your talented guests!
  2:07pm Sean in Bristol, UK:

Loving the live set, just the right music for dinner and a couple of bottles of Racer 5 that has travelled 8456 miles to be supped here in Bristol. @ Van, yeah went to the Nationals park a couple of years ago when my team The Mets were in town. Up to 15 MLB ballparks visited now!
  2:14pm Van in DC:

15? Wow. That's impressive. I'm only at 5, I think.
  2:17pm Matt from Springfield:

@Van: 5 total? Past and present? You can count previous ballparks visited (while the team was based there).
  2:19pm dc pat:

I've been to 2. PGH, Nats. And that's the way it's gonna stay.

Actually if there's a draw today, City will be on top because they have more goals.
  2:20pm Sean in Bristol, UK:

@Van, trying to think about your question. piano compositions are usually in four part harmony so violin can be transposed from a piano piece, might be off on the wrong tangent here,
  2:20pm Van in DC:

Ya, I think so...Turner Field (ATL), Coors Field (COL), Rangers Ballpark (TEX), Astrodome (HOU), and Nats new park. Oh wait. also Busch Stadium (STL). All places I've lived :)
  2:21pm Mike East:

I think I've only been to 4, though 2 of them have now been reduced to rubble.
  2:22pm Cheri Pi:

I used to love this song as a tween!
  2:23pm Van in DC:

I was just curious about the violin because I saw the composition there on Kevin's website. And I have so fallen in love with the violin this past year or two. Saw Sarah Chang w the National Philharmonic at Strathmore yesterday...she was phenomenal. At her CD signing, I told her, "I was wrong about you: you dance with your violin just fine. Just fine." She remembered that lol
  2:25pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Hello Airy Irene and all, At my stage of the game, I'm into third generation. At least being a Met's fan - PoloGrounds, Shea & Citifield. I guess going to old Yankee Stadium ( for Mets inter-league, of course!) counts too.
  2:27pm dc pat:

ok listners, I'm off to the bar to watch the first half. I'll be at Bread & Soda in Glover Park if anyone wants to join me.
  2:28pm Sean in Bristol, UK:

Mine are Mets old and new, Yankees old and new, Washington, Seattle, San Fran, Oakland. Cincinatti, Chicago Sox and Cubs, Pittsburgh, Millwaukee, plus Minor League parks at Boise, Fairbanks, Alaska and Coney Island.
  2:28pm Van in DC:

Enjoy dc pat!
  2:29pm Sean in Bristol, UK:

@ DC Pat, likewise!
  2:38pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Can't keep up with you ,Sean but I've also done Chavez Ravine & Fulton County.Do you come over to this side to do BB Tourism?
  2:40pm Casey:

There is no joy in Mudville.
  2:42pm Van in DC:

ha, I've been to far more snow skiing resorts than I have ballparks ;)
  2:43pm Matt from Springfield:

Wonderful Thierry!
Who now wants to watch/listen to "Moonstruck"?
  2:43pm Sean in Bristol, UK:

@KevinfromBayRidge, I just love the game, went to my first Mets game in 1989, knew nothing about the rules, I just loved the everything about it, national anthem, beer, hotdogs and once I learnt the rules, the statistics. Though it can be a little over the top!
  2:51pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Saturday is the fifth of May. Also known for being Cinco De Mayo!
  2:57pm Sean in Bristol, UK:

I think I ask this every year but can somebody bring me up to speed on what Cinco De Mayo means?
  2:57pm Van in DC:

Always love those More Excuses to Get Drunk Days :)

Wonderful show Irene, many thanks! Perfect way to end April.
  2:58pm Matt from Springfield:

Great live set, great show Irene!
  2:58pm Looms:

Hello all! Irene, Thanks for the nice show and live set.
  2:58pm Sean in Bristol, UK:

Yeah, just a fab show
  3:03pm Ken From Hyde Park:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinco_de_Mayo says it's a celebration in the United States of Mexican-American culture and experiences. It's the anniversary of a military battle for Mexican independence from France. Companies that make tequila do a lot to hype up the day.
  7:57pm NE in Brooklyn:

I am sorry I missed this live, but I'm really enjoying listening to the recordings this evening - absolutely other worldly.
