You see a blanket on the ground. It's your favorite color, smooth and soft. You can sit on it, or lie on it. It's a flying blanket, and you are the pilot. You are in control. You can fly anywhere you wish, just by thinking about it. You are the pilot.

  Mon. 4/23/12 9:13pm ranjit:

I had to sing "we are the 801" by myself tonight :(
  Mon. 4/23/12 9:13pm sweeeet:

did it freeze?
  Mon. 4/23/12 9:15pm Listening:

@sweeet: That's the end of the album Evol, a locked groove
Avatar Mon. 4/23/12 9:21pm Dan B:

Yes, the end of Evol -- happy to take suggestions of two things tonight for the show: songs ending with locked grooves and songs with full starts and stops in them or with a fake fade out in the middle (i.e. Helter Skelter) -- any ideas?
  Mon. 4/23/12 9:27pm G:

Not sure it really applies, but side one of Peter Gabriel's 2nd solo album (c. 1978) has a song "White Shadow" that ends with a B flat keyboard tone that cuts off and, if you have the speakers cranked enough, transitions smoothly into the B flat of the background electrical hum, which continues indefinitely if you let the tone arm ride along in the innermost groove. I always wondered if that was deliberate :-)
  Mon. 4/23/12 9:28pm damien:

NRBQ: "Tragic Magic" - Album: "Scraps"
  Mon. 4/23/12 9:30pm D in Miami:

Good start, Dan. I only have one locked-groove vinyl. A split by Cortez/Language of Light. It's a good way to end an album.
  Mon. 4/23/12 9:31pm joe:

Five Per Cent for Nothing - Yes
  Mon. 4/23/12 9:36pm InBrkly:

All of these are fave songs but what a weird theme. I'm racking my brains to come up with a song. Kick Inside of Me by Simple Minds comes to an abrupt halt.
  Mon. 4/23/12 9:39pm D in Miami:

There's a final hidden song at the end of Cindytalk's "Wappinschaw" with an abrupt, jarring start.
  Mon. 4/23/12 9:41pm tr::sh:

'I talk to the wind' has a silent beat before it goes into the flutey part.

Os Mutantes - Ando Meio Desligado
  Mon. 4/23/12 9:42pm damien:

"Running, Jumping, Standing Still" - by "Spider" John Koerner and Willie Murphy. Though, you should just play the whole damned album!
  Mon. 4/23/12 9:42pm 12539:

Wikipedia says, "The first known hit single to have a recorded locked groove is "Muskrat Love" by Captain & Tennille."

I Dare You.

New Order's "Every Little Counts"

Good evening Dan and all the listeners.
  Mon. 4/23/12 9:51pm Andrew Waterloo:

The only one I can think of is one of the sides on Godspeed you Black Emperor's F#A# Infinity ends in a lock groove
  Mon. 4/23/12 9:52pm Joe Mulligan:

I just got a one-sided album of locked grooves by Henry
  Mon. 4/23/12 9:53pm steve:

Joe & Joe s/t LP - Joe Potts + Joe Hammer from LAFMS... one of the heaviest tape mangling lps ever and thankfully side two ends in a locked groove

I have no idea what's going on, but it's about damn time they played some songs I like on this station.
  Mon. 4/23/12 9:59pm Frisko Kid:

Lee Ranaldo, of course. Metal Machine Music. "Nail" by Scraping Foetus Off The Wheel features a locked groove on the final song (“Anything”)
Mon. 4/23/12 10:00pm Richard from Venezuela:

I found this interesting post about lock grooves on cointinuo's blog http://goo.gl/kGOsZ

By the way, what is a lock groove?
  Mon. 4/23/12 10:00pm D in Miami:

There's some fade-in and cut on the untitled track from Boris' Smile album.
  Mon. 4/23/12 10:05pm ranjit:

Do you have the chip version of Tristan Perich's 1-Bit Symphony? That ends with an infinite loop.
Mon. 4/23/12 10:06pm Richard from Venezuela:

Challenging radio. This is why wfmu rocks.
  Mon. 4/23/12 10:08pm D in Miami:

This is why Dan locks!
Mon. 4/23/12 10:08pm Tom - In Gravesend Brooklyn:

evening Danny.
  Mon. 4/23/12 10:33pm Patrick:

I seem to remember that FMU did am all locked grove lp as a marathon prize a few years ago. also there are some great cuts/pauses in many melvins songs. on the album the Maggot all of the songs are split in two, on the cd. for example track one is actually tracks 1&2.
  Mon. 4/23/12 10:34pm G:

@Patrick: It was either 2009 or 2010...
  Mon. 4/23/12 10:35pm damien:

the best is Mr. Johansen singing "THe King of Babylon" on Miami Vice, circa 1986

Judy in the Loop with Pauses
  Mon. 4/23/12 10:39pm Patrick:

@G i thought it was a little longer ago then that, i have it somewhere, i remember when i got it i would play it just to annoy people, after a while you could not help but to get into it. some of the noises where amazing. i think Irwin did a show once where he played tracks off it for a good part of his show.

  Mon. 4/23/12 10:58pm steve:

Dan B, can you seriously tell which loop is by which artist on this record??
  Mon. 4/23/12 10:59pm G:

Wikipedia: "...records consisting entirely of circular multiple bands to provide collections of infinite loop sound samples of duration limited to one revolution of the disc. [Duration; 1.8 seconds] Notable examples of this are the releases from RRRecords of the 7-inch RRR-100 (with 100 individual bands) and the 12-inch RRR-500 (with 500 bands) and RRR-1000 (with 1000 bands.)"

this loops is loopy loops
  Mon. 4/23/12 11:10pm Ike:

Anybody listening via FM in Brooklyn nabes like Flatbush, Ditmas Park, Windsor Terrace, or Kensington? I was there this weekend and the Haitian 90.9 pirate was back on the air, interfering with FMU worse than ever. Hope it's not broadcasting all week too. Pelt the FCC with complaints maybe?
  Mon. 4/23/12 11:16pm D in Miami:

Sweet! I haven't heard this since it came out. That SP100 was a good comp.
  Mon. 4/23/12 11:18pm G:

@Ike: I wrote Liz about that problem the last time it was happening (maybe February) and part of her advice was for us to see if we can find an address or phone number for the pirate location, because a direct communication from FMU might work better than waiting months or years to get to the top of the FCC's docket. The internet shows that 90.9 is assigned to a local college radio station that the college station doesn't seem to be using, so the pirates decided it's empty and they can "use" it -- but with the output cranked so high it also kills 91.1's over air signal, and I have to stream. (I'm near Brooklyn College, and I'm pretty sure the pirate station is not too far north to northeast of here, within a couple of miles at most.)
  Mon. 4/23/12 11:22pm G:

Mon. 4/23/12 11:23pm That "Soundbite of the Day" from Looney Tunes:

Monotonous, isn't it?
  Mon. 4/23/12 11:28pm Ike:

@G: Yeah, I heard the pirate give out a phone number but it was in Haitian Creole so I couldn't understand most of it. I hope a French-speaking FMU listener in the area will monitor the pirate, or somebody will tape airchecks and pass them to the folks at FMU. As for the college station WKRB, they moved to 90.3 a few years ago, since 90.9 never made sense. Too crowded.
  Mon. 4/23/12 11:28pm G:

Perhaps, but updating the playlist is a lot easier. :-)
  Mon. 4/23/12 11:31pm G:

@Ike: As of Feb., the 90.9 college station hadn't updated its website, FWIW.

The commenter on the blogpost I gave a link to just now speculated "possibly from 55 Winthrop Street"...
  Mon. 4/23/12 11:32pm D in Miami:

I'll bet Dan's in his chair, lulled into a deep trance by his own loop.
  Mon. 4/23/12 11:32pm G:

We're all loopy
Avatar Mon. 4/23/12 11:33pm Dan B:

No chance for trance for meeee, unfortunately i must keep the dust from these grooves and move this song along at however slow a space to take it to a new place
  Mon. 4/23/12 11:34pm Alicia Renee:

...i highly reccomend streaming from @ least 2 different sources (e.g. 128k stream + radio/ flash stream + FMU-app/etc)

((driving earlier, fiddled w/dial assuming to be greeted w/sounds of throat singing...but, again, pleasingly appropriate. this time for a loopy monday))
  Mon. 4/23/12 11:34pm D in Miami:

I knew those Teletubbies were going to be trouble some day. Wreaking havoc on FMU! Those little chubby bastards!
  Mon. 4/23/12 11:36pm G:

Q: Where does a teletubby loop sit down?

A: Wherever it wants to, for as long as it wants to.
  Mon. 4/23/12 11:36pm tr::sh:

sounds good with a fan/makes the fan sound good
  Mon. 4/23/12 11:38pm D in Miami:

Or maybe put the fan in front of the speaker for that vibrato effect?
Avatar Mon. 4/23/12 11:38pm Dan B:

Yes that 90.9 Kreyol pirate in Flatbush has been pissing me off for years. It obliterates WFMU's air signal when on air -- which luckily is sporadic. We should def. get their ID and phone number so Liz can go all medieval on their asses. What is the college that has that frequency?? I checked FCC website a week ago and saw no legit registrations at that freq. BTW, I live in Ditmas within blocks of the place, so maybe we can get a posse and go storm them and take their place over and simulcast WFMU there but just a little off phase.
  Mon. 4/23/12 11:40pm Alicia Renee:

@Ike @G experienced the irksome radio free flatbush rain on my wfmu-parade a couple months back.
t'is a conundrum i suppose (where 2 set up one's pirate-bdcast for longevity vs. ethics of drowning out smaller, non-commerical stations)
  Mon. 4/23/12 11:42pm G:

@Dan: "WKRB 90.9 FM, Kingsborough Community College", now at 90.3 -- but plenty of webpages, including a Kingsboro one I saw early this year, listed it as if it's still at its old 90.9 frequency
  Mon. 4/23/12 11:42pm D in Miami:

I live in Little Haiti in Miami, and they do pirate radio here, too. But we really have no stations worth listening to in Miami. I only stream FMU for my radio needs.
  Mon. 4/23/12 11:42pm Alicia Renee:

*second*
  Mon. 4/23/12 11:42pm Ike:

@Dan, I think G is talking about Kingsborough College but they moved from 90.9 to 90.3 a few years ago. Info saying they're on 90.9 is outdated.

The FCC once shut down a pirate at 90.9 in your general area. But that was 2008:
http://tiny.cc/fritopirate
Maybe they're back?

Thanks Dan an an an an an an an an an an an an an an an an an an
  Mon. 4/23/12 11:56pm Ike:

@Dan, I don't drive over to Brooklyn too often, but the Haitian pirate seemed stronger than ever this past weekend. Smashed WFMU's signal to bits well into Kensington, further than ever before in my experience.

I really like Ditmas Park and might want to move there from NJ someday, but first y'all have to talk this pirate into moving elsewhere, like to 99.9 or something (although, that's most likely already occupied by OTHER pirates).
Avatar Mon. 4/23/12 11:57pm Dan B:

@G/Ike, yeah, it's the same folks as always...they just pop back up cuz it's only minor civil fines even when they get whacked. @D in Miami, 12539, that's what's it's, all the hits, that's fits fur prints.
