Listener comments!

  9:01am Cheri Pi:

Hi Liz B!
  9:04am Dead Corporate Eyes:

the fog is still in my head...let's keep it that way for awhile. good morning!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06am Liz B.:

Don't worry, DCE, I'll keep it foggy for a bit! Welcome Cheri and anyone else out there who may be too foggy to chime in yet!
  9:09am Dead Corporate Eyes:

this is great
  9:13am BenG:

Foggy, with patches of clarity. I have a feeling that in the fog and after it lifts we're on some kind of musical odyssey. Thanks Liz.
  9:14am northguineahills:

Nice start thusdar!
  9:15am northguineahills:

*thusfar, not that it won't continue in said direction.
  9:17am Dead Corporate Eyes:

I thought "thusdar" might be some kind of nickname for Liz. Why not?
  9:18am Dead Corporate Eyes:

sort of a Viking name...join Odin and Thor, Liz!
  9:20am northguineahills:

This Sunhiilow sounds a lot like old school Spacetime Continuum.
  9:20am BenG:

I thought Thusdar is brother of Sun Ra.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am Liz B.:

Ha ha, I kinda like "Thusdar!" For some reason, I always need to wade into Monday cautiously... can't just jump in the deep end and get it over with.
  9:23am northguineahills:

I thought Thusdar was a cousin of the Thundercats.
  9:27am Cheri Pi:

Back to the fog
  9:30am lane:

hey all!... LIZ... long time listener first time live stream commenter... love you taste! and, we met once. ROCK ON!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am Liz B.:

Hi Lane, great to see you here! Welcome to the magical world of the WFMU comment thread!
  9:45am BSI:

This is, indeed, a magical world...
  9:47am Bolondgomba:

Flittingly smooth compilation, Liz
  9:48am Braveness23:

Mmm... birthday cake! I made birthday cake crepes once!
  9:53am still b/p:

"Another Cigarette..." reminded me of the mole cartoon soundtracks.
  10:00am Cheri Pi:

that sounded very A Certain Ratio-y
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am Liz B.:

Someone left a copy of "O: The Oprah Magazine" here in the studio. Such a great megalomaniac move... create a magazine named after yourself and every issue has you on the cover!
  10:14am Dead Corporate Eyes:

she's gotta create her mythos, after all.
  10:15am bw:

good morning all! Hey hey LB!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Liz B.:

I'd like to think that if I were a billionaire, I'd just buy an island somewhere and chill instead of bothering to pose for the cover of the magazine named after me every month.
  10:18am Dead Corporate Eyes:

megalomaniacs are never satisfied
  10:21am BenG:

Look at Rupert Murdoch, as the Beatles might say, "a mean old man", throwing his mean ass children to the wolves. The guy will do anything for a headline.
  10:22am tim from Champaign:

Was it Jonesy and X-Ray who left the Oprah magazine?
  10:23am Skirkie:

Oprah is on an island somewhere. It's been a hologram for years now.
  10:24am 100% pure dc pat:

jeeze I dunno LizB, if I were a billionaire I think I'd create a magazine about me too. dc pat fancy or something...
  10:24am Jennique:

If I were a billionaire I'd make a theme park after myself, sorta like Dollywood, only with way weirder rides.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am Liz B.:

Ha ha, good point, Skirkie! You're probably right! The mag doesn't have a subscription sticker on it, so I will never know the true owner. We can all speculate, though.
  10:26am Dead Corporate Eyes:

dc pat, I'd subscribe to that!
  10:26am still b/p:

If Oprah was just a mega lo mein-iac instead, she'd still never be satisfied, but at least it would only be a burden for her lunch companions.
  10:28am BSI:

My money's on BRYCE as the O-planter.
  10:29am Caryn:

Maybe Ken is boning up on Oprah to prepare for a fundraising plea? Being able to say "I really liked the latest issue of O" and quoting specific articles will help him butter up Oprah. Best way to loosen the purse strings.

If you're a billionaire, why settle for an island? I say a hollowed-out volcano base or underwater base of operations like a Bond villain would be way cooler.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am Liz B.:

Good points, Jennique and Caryn... a theme park or a hollowed-out volcano are far better ways to waste one's billions!
  10:34am Caryn:

I think I'd avoid a theme park, because those are just law suits waiting to happen. Unless you only use the park yourself, of course.
  10:35am Skirkie:

Pumice comes from volcanoes, incidentally.
  10:40am Jennique:

If anyone wanted to sue me about my theme park, I'd just settle out of court and build them their own theme park and let the country be overrun by theme parks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am Liz B.:

Jeans that make you look 10 lbs thinner and other denim miracles!
  10:42am 100% pure dc pat:

Yeah I'm with Caryn, why WOULDN'T you become a crazed Bond-type villain if you were a billionaire?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am Liz B.:

Taco Fiesta! The easiest dinner party you'll ever throw
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am Liz B.:

The new rules for healthy living: so much more fun than the old ones!
  10:44am Caryn:

Maybe you could have everyone sign waivers before entering? "Yeah, you can visit the most awesome theme park on the planet, just sign this here paper."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am Liz B.:

Express yourself! 26 ways to tell your story and share it with the world
  10:45am Skirkie:

That magazine probably has some subliminal messages that can be read by black light or some such method.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am Liz B.:

Oprah talks to an American Idol
(Steve Tyler written inside of a heart with an arrow through it)
  10:46am Caryn:

Liz, is one of the 26 ways to express yourself to the world "become a billionaire and then publish a magazine named after yourself"?
  10:48am Caryn:

I also suspect "have your own talkshow", "recommend your fave books via your own book club" and "have your own tv network" are part of the 26 ways.
  10:49am 100% pure dc pat:

Spiritualized are on Fat Possum? Weird.
  10:53am Caryn:

I don't know if I'd become a supervillain if I was a billionaire, but I'd certainly take some style tips as far as lairs are concerned. Maybe a leisurely "gentleman thief" (or whatever the female equivalent is) lifestyle might be nice? I suspect I might go the Diabolik route: cool mountain lair, hot supermodel lover who never wears underwear, a fleet of black and white sportscars, a round, revolving bed covered in money...
  10:55am Skirkie:

...have the bed money changed every week. Make sure the old money is thrown away.
  10:56am suea:

is that the issue with not one but TWO Oprahs on it? I saw it in the market today. you know, there is an article in there that will CHANGE YOUR LIFE. or so it says on cover.
  10:57am Caryn:

That's what laundering money is for, Skirkie! As a billionaire, the old money will easily be recycled by buying some more sportscars. Fresh money will take its place.
  10:59am Martha Stewart:

You want sheets with a high bread-count.
  10:59am Caryn:

I suspect the Teremina language is Lithuanian, not Russian.
  11:04am 100% pure dc pat:

yeah, I like the mountain lair but the Thunderball-style underwater-city-kind-of-thang would be cool too. Have have more than one supermodel...many, many supermodels. And everybody has to wear togas all the time. Beer comes out of all the golden faucets...what else?
  11:04am Skirkie:

Hells no. If I'm a crazy billionaire I'm not re-using filthy bed money. It gets tossed in the volcano.
  11:06am Caryn:

@dc pat: I think you mean "The Spy Who Loved Me"-style underwater city? "Thunderball" just had underwater fighting and the shark pool.
  11:08am 100% pure dc pat:

nah, there was a Blofeld/Sean Connery one in an underwater mansion or something, wasn't there? Hang on, got to find out...
  11:08am BSI:

@dcp: will there be a dog park & at least one place to get a curry?
  11:10am Jennique:

I'd need a place for authentic gelato and landing pad for my jet pack.
  11:11am 100% pure dc pat:

dang you're right, guess it was Spy Who Loved Me. Fucking Roger Moore. He ruined it for me..

BSI: curry comes out of the OTHER golden faucets. No dogs allowed.
  11:11am northguineahills:

Nice Container track!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Liz B.:

Now I'm bummed, suea... there is only one Oprah on this magazine cover! I want the two Oprah issue!
  11:12am 100% pure dc pat:

tons of jet packs and landing pads...you gotta use jet packs everywhere you go--down to the mailbox, everywhere...
  11:12am Caryn:

"The Spy Who Loves Me"s villain, Stromberg, was originally supposed to be Goldfinger's brother. I guess that would've made him Fishfinger?
  11:13am BSI:

Good news on the curry. And this isn't a dog. He's an ugly dwarf cripple person. Seriously.
  11:14am Skirkie:

Oprah's got a fold-in in the back of the magazine right? Where the answer is always Oprah, I bet.
  11:15am Jennique:

Dogs are allowed EVERYWHERE. And giraffes. All strapped with jet packs.
  11:16am 100% pure dc pat:

I liked George Lazenby, he was great. and that lady who played Emma Peel, roww, roww...23 skadoo....
  11:17am eliab:

  11:17am Jennique:

For some reason I keep picturing the animated evil lair/volcano in the animated movie The Incredibles.
  11:17am BSI:

@dcp: Diana Rigg in the Avengers? Amen times infinity.
  11:17am Caryn:

Well, honestly, if Bond was ever going to get married, of course he would marry Emma Peel! Totally logical! I think that's my fave Bond movie.
  11:18am 100% pure dc pat:

I'm sorry, I'm going to have to put my foot down with the dog issue. I know a lot of FMU commenters like dogs, but the only dogs allowed in my underwater mansion are guard dogs with wetsuits and aqualungs...no jet packs for them. You just can't trust 'em.
  11:19am 100% pure dc pat:

right Diana Rigg...tch, tch....chicken inspector...
  11:19am Quibbler:

D.C. is pure?
  11:20am Caryn:

I like the fact that the Bond movies over the years have featured 3 out of 4 Avengers women and Steed.
  11:20am Skirkie:

My dogs would have the talking collars from that depressing balloon movie.
  11:20am 100% pure dc pat:

it always bummed me out that she gets wasted in the end though...
  11:22am northguineahills:

Saw Ital Friday, while chowing down on pierogis.
  11:22am Carmichael:

Good morning everyone. Good looking setlist there, Liz.
  11:22am Caryn:

Yeah, but at least Bond gets his revenge! I like that both "Diamonds Are Forever" and "For Your Eyes Only" carry over the idea of a vengeful Bond out to get Blofeld.
  11:31am lane:

loving this groove!
  11:35am Mary Wing:

Morning Liz and peoples of radioland! That Oprah magazine has been floating around the station for a while; I think I read the Steven Tyler interview in the DJ bathroom last week. It wasn't particularly interesting.
  11:36am Jennique:

Went to Barcade this weekend and this song is giving me flashbacks. Centipede and Joust were my high score games.
  11:37am 100% pure dc pat:

last year I went on a genre quest, read Red Harvest, then watched Yojimbo followed by Fist Full of Dollars. I recommend it to everyone.

Eyooo, that Opera mag was in the DJ bathroom??
  11:37am 100% pure dc pat:

haha! "Opera", meant Oprah
  11:40am Caryn:

Of course, that is the next step in her quest to rule all media: an Oprah opera.
  11:43am Bolondgomba:

active potential continually
  11:43am northguineahills:

I've seen the other titles, what's "Red Harvest"?
  11:46am 100% pure dc pat:

ngh: supposedly, (though now I'm seeing that this is disputed) Kurosawa based Yojimbo on that Hammett private eye novel.
  11:47am Caryn:

Kurosawa said Yojimbo was more based on Hammett's "The Glass Key", but I think if you read both, it would be a good basis for watching the movies.
  11:49am Caryn:

Of course, if you read "The Glass Key", you would then also have to watch the film versions. And "Miller's Crossing".
  11:49am 100% pure dc pat:

great Caryn, thanks a lot! Why didn't you tell me that last year??
  11:49am Bolondgomba:

maybe you'll despise the idea of watching anything after the trip with the book.
  11:50am 100% pure dc pat:

not if we're talking Kurosawa and Leone.
  11:51am Caryn:

Well, personally I feel that "Red Harvest" is closer to "Yojimbo" than "The Glass Key" is, and heck, there's lots of debate about the movie issue, so I don't think you made a mistake by reading it, dc pat.
  11:51am Mike East:

speaking of books into movies - I watched the Fincher version of Girl with the Dragon Tattoo on Saturday, now I have to read the book to figure out which film was more faithful. I preferred the Swedish version. Good morning everyone (have i said that yet?)
  11:52am Bolondgomba:

aha, of course, it can happen the other way around to
  11:53am Caryn:

When I headed up the university film club, I'd set up nights showing 3 movie versions of the same story or on the same theme, so these discussions are all too familiar to me.
  11:54am Bolondgomba:

after I read the Quiet American from Greene I wasn't particularly interested in a cinematographic adaptation.
  11:55am 100% pure dc pat:

yes, the Stupid Punk Rock has arrived!
  11:55am Caryn:

@Mike East: I'd try to track down the tv series version of the Swedish film to get the most "faithful" adaptation, if that is the main criterion. 3 hours per book.
  11:57am Bolondgomba:

and than again, The Third Man was quite a trip without knowing that Greene wrote it
  11:58am Mike East:

thanks, Caryn. Looks like that's available for me to stream...I will have to devote a rainy day to it.
  11:59am 100% pure dc pat:

I just saw the Third Man couple months ago for the first time. Never got around to seeing before. Good one.
  12:00pm Caryn:

Funnily enough, just this morning I burned the tv series of the 3rd Millenium book onto a DVD.
  12:01pm Caryn:

Damn, missed the other n in there...
  12:01pm 100% pure dc pat:

welp time to eat sushi, bye!!
  12:02pm Caryn:

Time to eat mud pie, bye!
  12:05pm Cheri Pi:

this whole set rules!
  12:06pm Van in DC:

hi / bye
  12:06pm Nathan:

I second that. Great set Liz!
  5:04am Tytia:

Thanks for beautiful set! And Tytia Mina Teremina sings in pure Lithuanian!
