Street interviews, listener call-ins, vinyl gluttery, sporadic normalcy, original floperas and fiktion, blatant talking over songs, politix, tenderness, and a vague undercurrent of angst. Right up your alley!

Options March 15, 2012: Occupy The Waldorf Astoria - Anti-Romney Protest

Listen to this show:  Pop‑up player!

Artist Track Album Label Year Format Comments Approx. start time
This show was recorded on Wednesday, March 14th, in front of (and around the circumference of) the Waldorf Astoria Hotel at 50th St. and Park Avenue in Manhattan. Occupy Wall Street protesters and other concerned citizens were speaking out against Mitt Romney's presence in town for a campaign fundraiser, and other related greivances.

Often, there is someone blowing a whistle during a march, or when I am trying to interview someone. Of course, I wouldn't ask them to stop, but it causes my micro-cassette recorder to distort and it is extremely distracting.

I wanted to mention how influential Firesign Theatre, and particularly the Dear Friends 2-LP set, was to me and The Dusty Show. Their style of comedy was wholly new at the time and quite radical. I can't over-exxagerate what an impression hearing them had on me when I was14. RIP Peter Bergman and thanks for your innovative humor.

In all honesty, I wish I'd had time to edit the rest of this episode. Not that this man isn't interesting. He is. Probably just so I can edit out the parts where I sound dumb. There is actually more of that type of footage than you can imagine. All stored in a Yuban coffee can in the attic.

I DID have the option to hold these last interviews until next week and gussie them up at that time. I could have just played records for half-an-hour. Could have! These are decisions I fret about after-the-fact. When it seems I may have settled for less than was possible. Plain, unadorned interviews. Not very damned Dusty. THen again, I suppose my real trepidation is that you'll prefer it this way. Which leads me closer to my planned Clay-Free episode. Coming soon.
... and continues.
Clarification: When the man said, "You will not play this on the radio," it was not what it may have seemed. He was saying that he didn't think I would air it, as in - I wish you WOULD, but I know you won't. I hope that makes sense. Some wondered if I'd violated his wished of it not being aired, but that was not the case. If you listen, you can hear me shut off the tape player and re-start it. This is when I asked him if it was all right to continue and ...
... he continues ...

Thanks very much for checking out the show. I wish I had had the time to finsih the second-half. Edits and all that. It always bums me to just roll tape, but, sometimes I have to. Been very busy lately and trying to squeeze enough time in for Dustyfying Activites. Never want to just "phone it in" you know? Anyway ,.,, it felt really, really good to do some Occupying again. I found that I really missed the energy and commitment I always sense when I am near an Occupy Action. I hope you'll check one out soon. Very interesting things happening everywhere. Still kind of in a happy haze from Marathon, which was so much fun this time around. Thanks again for your support. Also, I really enjoy the Accu-Playlist and seeing familiar and new names on there each week. It feels like family and I like that.

Umm ... what else? Guess that's it for now. I would love to hear from you if you have a moment. I love your feedback on the show - thoughts on the world you live in - compliments - criticisms - all welcome,

OK, now I'm really going. Take care everybody and be happy or be however you want to be. Life is good. Peace and love. Take care and ... always remember.

Avatar 6:03pm Pigeon:

Hey Matt!
  6:04pm Caryn:

Hi Clay & listeners!
  6:04pm kata:

whats up Matt and Clay --
Avatar 6:04pm Pigeon:

Caryn, Kata ... welcome!
  6:04pm Matt from Springfield:

More exploration of Jaco, or in this case pre-Jaco...
Hey Caryn and kata!
  6:09pm Caryn:

Interestingly, in the 2011-12 Press Freedom Index, the US is only no. 47, losing to such countries as Papua New Guinea and Ghana. Any thoughts, Clay?
  6:10pm kata:

Mr. Pigeon has business cards ? oh please post an image...
  6:11pm Matt from Springfield:

We can make it to better times, but a lot are going to suffer until then. Awareness of problems plauging the government and economy is on the rise, a backlash has started, but it won't be easy to make any better world.
Avatar 6:11pm Pigeon:

I know ... I need images. Images! I have the ugliest page at FMU. Caryn, I hope things can improve through vigilance and peaceful action.
  6:11pm Matt from Springfield:

Yeah Clay, post one of your "cards" on a playlist! Others have expressed interest in seeing that too!
Avatar 6:13pm Pigeon:

Recorded this footage yesterday, si I couldn't doctor it to my satisfaction. Not enough hours, my friends. Not enough hours.
Avatar 6:13pm Pigeon:

Matbe I could include on along with the CC4 promotional unit.
  6:13pm Matt from Springfield:

@Caryn: Only about 6 very corporate companies own pretty much all media, those with press passes still end up arrested most of the time at protests, threats against reporters count for a lower score.
Avatar 6:14pm Pigeon:

Man. I'm so sleep-deprived, I'm mis-spelling.
  6:15pm Matt from Springfield:

A- Clay, you were within one QwerTY letter :)
  6:17pm glenn!:

get a job, you goddamn pinkos!
Avatar 6:17pm Pigeon:

Glenn. Good to see you.
  6:17pm Matt from Springfield:

Did you return an "Okay M__F__" Clay? :)
Avatar 6:18pm Pigeon:

No comment, Matt.
  6:19pm Matt from Springfield:

The only place anymore where most cars you see are Detroit made, is probably Detroit.
  6:19pm glenn!:

why are you pigeon tonight, and not clay?
  6:21pm Caryn:

And I gotta say, I don't think your page is ugly, Clay. For one thing, you've chosen nice colours. Granted, it's minimalistic, but that's not the same as ugly.

@Matt: yep. That reminds me of "Grosse Pointe Blank", where all the spies and assassins are easy to spot, because they're the only ones in American-made cars.
  6:22pm Matt from Springfield:

He would be a "Classical Liberal", a European pre-libertarian sort of philosophy.
Avatar 6:23pm Pigeon:

Good point Matt.

Glenn. Not sure. Just a feeling.

Caryn ... thanks! :>)
  6:23pm Matt from Springfield:

@Caryn: Ha ha, probably the same for unmarked police cars!
  6:25pm Betelgeuse:

Stopped by Liberty Park a few weeks ago very late rainy night. Cops cops cops everywhere. Not a soul to be seen in the park. Took a seat to enjoy the view of the new national security tower under construction. Laid back to get a better view on one the tables. After a few minutes I was joined by a plain clothes officer who informed me that you are no longer allowed to recline or otherwise take a recumbent posture in the park. He was relatively apologetic for breaking balls but I had no doubt that an arrest was on the horizon. Sad.
  6:25pm Julie:

Clay's cards are simple and elegant :)
  6:26pm Matt from Springfield:

Is this from "Free To Be You And Me"?
  6:27pm Barbara, in London:

Hey thanks for "Different". Don't think I've ever heard it on the radio. I've loved that song for years - the Cass Elliot version, that is
Avatar 6:27pm Pigeon:

thanks for that, Betel.

JULIE! Thanks for checking in, young lady.
  6:27pm Matt from Springfield:

Cards that are very befitting of Clay.
Hi Julie!
  6:27pm Caryn:

Yay, Julie in the house!
Avatar 6:29pm Pigeon:

No, Matt. But I love William Has A Doll from that Marlo LP. This is from PufNStuf, evidently. Barbara of London sez Cass sang it.
  6:30pm other david:

Great show Clay and important.

The occupy camp in Dublin got wound up last week. Sort of became a subject of popular derision over the last 2-3 months, despite the fact that everybody is complaining about enforced austerity, bailing out banks & bondholders.

Just 15 people in the camp when the police came and tore it down.

  6:31pm Matt from Springfield:

Slow down, slow down...
So, Obama = ...pawn of Kissinger???
  6:33pm glenn!:

wow. the birther ruse ain't working anymore. throw shit at the wall and hope it sticks is the new strategy.
  6:33pm joe:

I can picture this guy in front of his mirror with index cards memorizing this schtick
Avatar 6:33pm Pigeon:

TY Other. Hard for the camps to survive, but there are other effective avenues of peaceful protest. Solidarity, bro.
  6:33pm Listener Dave from Seattle:

This guy is a real treat.
Avatar 6:34pm Pigeon:

I just kind of let him run with it, Dave.
  6:34pm Listener Dave from Seattle:

Not much else you can do I guess!
  6:35pm joe:

Occupy your own street before you worry about Wall St.
  6:35pm Matt from Springfield:

Bush was incompetent shill salesman, guy. Yet you seem horribly misenchanted with him...
Competence IS a virtue when it comes to the head of government.
Avatar 6:35pm Pigeon:

I ran out of time last night at 5am. Just had to let it roll. No editing to save me from sounding inept!
  6:35pm Emile:

This guy is blowing my mind, to the radical side of Chomsky.
  6:36pm Listener Dave from Seattle:

You did a good job of dealing with someone like him.
Avatar 6:36pm Pigeon:

Hey Emile! TY Dave. Seattle. Layne Staley. RIP
  6:37pm joe:

I resent the fact that I have been lumped in with the 99% automatically due to the fact that I'm not part of the 1%. I do not share many of Occupy's opinions or the practices of the supposed 1% percents.
  6:38pm glenn!:

you WILL NOT air this. that's right, i'm talking to you.
  6:38pm joe:

Pigeon you are not supposed to be airing this
  6:39pm kata:

i missed the beginning of what this dude said, but some of ihis criticisms I agree with, it's the condescending tone of his voice that bugs me.
Avatar 6:39pm Pigeon:

He meant ... you WON'T air this. Like ... I wish you would, but I bet you won't.
  6:39pm Matt from Springfield:

@joe: And you don't have to. "The 99%" refers to a mindset, and everyone in the actual 99% is open to call themselves such, or not.

Now, Americans are the 1% of the Earth. Wonder how I figure into that...
Avatar 6:40pm Pigeon:

We talked about it. That's why I shut the tape off momentarily.
  6:40pm Emile:

I wish I was as sure about the way the universe works as this guy.
  6:40pm Matt from Springfield:

@kata: And his screeding fashion of monologue. THIS IS WHAT THE INTERNET'S FOR! WHY AM I STILL LISTENING TO THIS?? :)
  6:40pm Julie:

We should increase the number to 120 percent to fit more people in :D
  6:41pm glenn!:

dear conspiracy theorists: occam's razor. that's all.
  6:41pm joe:

I just have a problem that if someone came down and offered all of these guys a decent job with a comfortable life my opininon is 50% of them won't be there the next morning.
  6:41pm Listener Dave from Seattle:

He seems like a really strange candidate for Occupy. But I guess everyone has their own reasons.
  6:42pm Barbara, in London:

99% a mindset?
Avatar 6:42pm Pigeon:

How are you Jules? Did you check out TJF?
  6:42pm Chico:

when you trulllllly look at what it is to be human andwhat it is to have love for your fellow man, you see whoever is running this game is far from human. Not to get cooky or anything but just think about how you feel as a human.
  6:43pm glenn!:

joe is right. but those jobs are vanishing.
  6:43pm joe:

Do we honestly belive that we have to wait 10 years for the banks to own everything as if it is not that way already.
Avatar 6:43pm Pigeon:

Great insight, Chico.
  6:43pm sfrances:

Really enjoying the show...listening instead of typing--I'm so glad you get this guy roll & talk, Clay.
Hope y'all are having a swell evening!
  6:44pm Matt from Springfield:

@Barbara: For example, many Occupys are respectful to the surrounding police, calling them the 99% themselves. Occupy Oakland however is very radical (they shut down the port in December) and the police in Oakland have a long history of brutality (the Marine vet shot in the head with a tear gas canister). Occupy Oakland says that those police may be 99% economically, but are part of the 1% for protecting power with a vengeance.
  6:46pm joe:

@Chico well put
  6:46pm sfrances:

What an unexpected delight to just hear you say my name! & I agree: we were totally denied seasons this year. Booo climate change!
  6:46pm dc pat:

What would we do without the Pigeon?
  6:47pm sfrances:

What is this piano piece that you so frequently use? I love it & have remained curious~
  6:47pm Silent H:

Hey Clay! Up here in Minneapolis with a sunny 66 degrees!
  6:47pm kata:

Clay you are perhaps posessed by Shatner ?
  6:47pm glenn!:

i have blooming flowers and bees in my yard today, on the 15th of march in toronto. that's insane.
  6:47pm mikev:

Liverpool NY here but living near Boulder, CO! Clay, I love your show, don't ever change, baby!
  6:48pm sinister dexter:

good stuff Clay Pigeon ..... greetings from grand rapids michigan
  6:48pm Matt from Springfield:

@joe,glenn: Occupy is protesting the status quo, and as someone pointed out here, you wouldn't expect people to still be camping in tents in Zuccotti Park 50 years from now. You move on, you take the battle to the next place. Hopefully things will improve, and some hardcore Occupiers will probably never leave; but if conditions genuinely improve, yes most will probably withdraw from Occupy.
Avatar 6:48pm Pigeon:

TY DC PAt .... what would FMU do without YOUR loyal presence. It matters. Keep listening!

Frances. Cy Coleman - Reverie In Tpaz ..... so lovely.
  6:49pm Matt from Springfield:

@dc pat: Don't SAY that! Don't CONSIDER that! Lalalalalalalala...
Avatar 6:49pm Pigeon:

Grand Rapids. Gerald Ford! I think I played a bar called The Green Apple there once.
  6:50pm Listener Dave from Seattle:

I'm originally from Minneapolis.
  6:50pm Matt from Springfield:

Fruit trees in Michigan. Cherries in the north and authentically-Danish danishes sold in a town there.
  6:50pm glenn!:

of course, matt. nobody is denying that. but, it's definitely true that many of the people occupying are unemployed or underemployed.
Avatar 6:51pm Pigeon:

Minneapolis. North Stars. Dinkytown. TAFKAP!
  6:51pm sfrances:

Thank you so much, Clay--I'll be ordering a copy!
Heading out for now, will finish listening via podcast. Have a great evening, always remember!

  6:52pm DPCD:

glenn is right, as always.
Avatar 6:52pm Pigeon:

Good night, Frances. Have fun.
  6:52pm Matt from Springfield:

Hey, listener meetup! Even if just us!
(I have your email--we should do something)
  6:53pm Julie:

I'm good Clay, miss you guys! TJF?
  6:53pm joe:

That's pretty arrogant to say that no one has been discussing this stuff prior to Occupy. Maybe John Stewart and Colbart were not talking about it so they didn't know about but it was being talked about.
  6:53pm kata:

this girl is west coast, hear the question marks at the end of statements. drives me nuts.
  6:54pm Matt from Springfield:

@kata: The perky girl from "Daria" had told Daria to sound perky? By saying everything like a question? :)
  6:55pm Valley Girl:

Like, you know?
Avatar 6:55pm Pigeon:

Thanks for listening, my friends. I really appreciate your presence here during Dusty. Hope you have a great weekend and that you'll return again next week. Until then ... take care and ... Always Remember -----

  6:55pm Listener Dave from Seattle:

Haha North Stars and Dinkytown don't really exist anymore
6:55pm Adam in Portland and Lynnwood:

Michael Steele expressed on last week's Real Time with Bill Maher that Occupy has had a great deal of power in terms of altering the national dialogue towards investigation of grand corporate corruption in the political process in the U.S.
  6:55pm glenn!:

governing is a million times more complicated than campaigning.
  6:55pm kata:

yah, I mean like, oh my gosh? know what I mean ??

  6:58pm kata:

great show Clay ! thank ya ! I guess I'm a little grumpy and critical today from my desk sitting on my butt eating celery..
6:58pm Adam in Portland and Lynnwood:

Clay, you're a force for positive change!
  6:58pm Barbara, in London:

@matt thanks. that is a good example to illustrate the point
  6:58pm Matt from Springfield:

Wonderful show tonight Clay! As always, but this was a thought-provoking and fun slice of Occupy.
