More Kittens, please! :o

Mike East:

I just started mine last week and realized I was missing one of my wife's W2's. So far it looks like I'll be just about breaking even between what I'll get back from federal, and what I'll owe the state.

Mike East:

Is there anything I should be looking out for since I bought a home last year? It seems the first time home buyer tax credit does not apply anymore - but I've never had a mortgage before, so I want to make sure I'm not missing anything.

Mike East:

also - Can Howie do my taxes for me?

beafdog:

hey mike. good news, now you can deduct the interest you paid on your mortgage. bad news- no more 1040-EZ. it's itemized deductions from here on out
  6:29pm
Mike East:

thanks, beafdog - but if my itemized deductions add up to less than the standard deduction amount ($11,400, or so, i think), then I just claim the standard deduction, right?
  6:31pm
beafdog:

maybe. I'll have to know your mortgage rate, principal amount, address and SS#
  6:33pm
Mike East:

hahaha. I'll get back to you on that.

I was out on Comp this year for 4 months. Due I owe tax on my Comp payments?

DPCD:

Can Howie speak to the issue of "primary residence." Apparently it is a fluid thing for rich politicians especially. I rent and am buying a place I may or may not move into at retirement (which keeps getting farther off!) The home needs a new heating system and the geothermal credit make this look like a good idea. Some say the IRS doesn't know where we live and some say they put small change guys like me in jail for trying to take advantage of the energy programs. I need to know if the place can be called a primary residence in 2012.

And please stop the awful list!
