  12:38pm conrad:

  12:39pm Doctor B.:

Been a Kottke fan since the Nixon administration!
  12:40pm dc pat:

nice stuff, Yair...where ever you are.
  12:40pm Doctor B.:

First day of the pledge drive and you're 15% of the way home? Damn, but that's impressive! WFMU listeners rock!
  12:42pm conrad:

i think its at 10% for the station as a whole. 15% for this show.
12:45pm yair Yona (Tel Aviv, Israel,Earth,Milky Way):

I'm here guys ;) listening and blushing quietly
  12:46pm Doctor B.:

Take your praise, Yair!
  12:46pm derp:

where be Billy Jam's accent come from?
  12:47pm G:

Liz made her entire two-week nut in her first show. Irene listeners should see that as a challenge and match it! I pledged and paid in full last week...
12:47pm yair Yona (Tel Aviv, Israel,Earth,Milky Way):

19:48 ;)
  12:47pm dc pat:

  12:50pm KP:

Phone number? It's not on first page of site either, not that see.
  12:53pm Sean in Bristol, UK:

Any chance of an Alash track, one of the many, many fab highlights that played on your show, Irene.
  12:57pm KP:

I saw the drive was at like 9% before it started early this morn, like 5. I say we'll do at least 150% before it's over, maybe double.
  12:58pm KP:

  1:01pm kat330:

Afternoon, Irene and commenters! Wow, already 38% raised? Excellent!
1:02pm Two Bears In Their Lair:

I can dig it!
  1:03pm KP:

We are simulcasting on Clare FM. :-)
  1:04pm noeems:

Hey! Another european here; writing from Paris. Really glad to've heard the new Marissa Nadler stuff. Thanks Irene!
  1:05pm G:

@kat: Over a third raised by the end of hour one. The math says we could theoretically be at 100% by 3PM...
  1:06pm kat330:

And then they'd resume to normal 'casting? ;)
  1:08pm kat330:

Nice sounds to digest lunch to, Irene. Thanks!
  1:08pm G:

We'd have to make all the goals early to find out :-)

But I bet they'd love to skip the "marathon lite" they've had to do in the autumn the past couple of years to avoid ending up with a year-end shortfall...
  1:10pm KP:

Sorry joking!
  1:11pm KP:

Sorry joking! that's what the
;-) was for.
  1:12pm kat330:

Your punishment, KP, is KP duty.
  1:13pm KP:

Sure and begorrah.
  1:14pm kat330:

@G: Well, then J.T. & I added some nice gravy at year's end as well.
@KP: In your case, that's peelin' potatoes!
  1:15pm G:

more greater moneyzzzzzz!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  1:16pm KP:

Northport! Not Northpoint. Thanks.
  1:17pm Sean in Bristol, UK:

Happy President's Day by the way, can our colonial cousins explain to us Brits what this is about?!
  1:17pm conrad:

thats an impointant port, kp.
  1:18pm KP:

Kat330: You'd be meaning the spuds?
  1:19pm Robert:

There's not just the "marathon lite"; it also looks like they're now going on maybe a 51- or 52-week pledge year, judging by the dates of the "spring" marathon, which used to begin around the time it's ending now.
  1:19pm kat330:

@Sean: The opportunity to buy and sell mattresses.
  1:19pm KP:

Hello Peter.
  1:19pm Mike East:

@Sean - it means you have to find someone to watch your kid, because while the schools and banks have a holiday, most normal people don't get the day off cuz its a made up holiday.
  1:20pm glenn:

at first i thought mattress was mistress.
  1:20pm Robert:

Officially it's the Washington's Birthday Uniform Holiday, although a lot of people have taken to call it "President's Day" to take in Lincoln's birthday as well.
  1:21pm G:

@Sean: Both of the two greatest early US presidents, Washington and Lincoln, were born in February. Both of their birthdays used to be holidays, but they would be on different days of the week every year. Somewhere in maybe the 1970s, the federal holidays were rearranged so as many as possible of them fell on Mondays, to make long weekends for Monday-to-Friday workers (most people). (Not July 4th, whose name would make it seem weird to have it on a different day from the 4th.) Presidents Day is always a Monday in February.
  1:22pm (Tel Aviv, Israel,Earth,Milky Way):

My two cents on WHY you should pledge to FMU. Irene, I love you. You have a beautiful soul. http://en.smalltownromanceblog.com/why-it-is-crucial-to-donate-to-wfmu/
  1:22pm kat330:

@glenn: You wish! I'll be delayed if desiring to type a reply as I'm peeling fruit for a fruit salad. Messy hands.
  1:24pm KP:

Peter, i would say Mary Jo says hello but she is sleeping off a 3-hour Downton Abbey marathon.
  1:24pm Downton Abbey:

We're better than NoDoz!!!! :-)
  1:25pm KP:

  1:26pm kat330:

[wiping hands on towel] Listening to this throat singing reminds me how Tom Waits often seems able to do this dingus. We were listening to "Big in Japan"t he other night, and I noticed that quality of almost 2 simultaneous octaves.
  1:27pm Sean in Bristol, UK:

Thanks Irene, for the Alash track.
  1:27pm Mike East:

nice testimonial, Yair
  1:37pm KP:

Notice that this time the DJ's bar graph has goal percentage but not dollar amount. PRetty sure it did in fall. This seems a more fair way to do it.
  1:39pm G:

@KP: If you click on "pledge" it will show you dollar amounts for goal and raised-so-far... Then hit refresh, to get back to the regular page. Or if you haven't pledged yet, Just Do It. :-)
  1:41pm Robert:

The term "President's Day" has become so widespread that many people think it was OFFICIALLY adopted by Congress, but although such a change was proposed, it was never adopted, so it remains officially Washington's Birthday.
  1:44pm KP:

And i did pledge last week on the automated site but not a personal one like this. Before this is over i wilreach $100 of my credit cards.
  1:44pm Dave in PA:

"(Paul) Pena is probably best known for writing the song "Jet Airliner," a major 1977 hit for the Steve Miller Band and a staple of classic rock radio; and for appearing in the 1999 documentary film Genghis Blues, wherein he displayed his abilities in the field of Tuvan throat singing." - Wikipedia
  1:44pm G:

States in the South largely did not celebrate Lincoln's birthday, because he defeated them in a certain war. :-) Many northern states did observe Lincoln's birthday.

Federal holidays do not need to be observed by any individual state or private entity. They are paid days off for federal workers. But often unions and businesses use federal holidays as a template for their own paid-holiday schedule...
  1:44pm Robert:

Many states have, or had, Lincoln's birthday as a Fec. 12 holiday, although that was never adopted by Congress either.
  1:46pm KP:

Ronnie Drew. There was a crackin guy. I met him a ta solo show in Va. and we talked foe quite a while. Tremendous guy. I also met Barney McKenna in Howth.
  1:47pm KP:

Tha should have read 100% of credit cards, and i have many.
  1:49pm Billy Jam:

at KP - that's cool.... I used to work at the Abbey Tavern in Howth
  1:51pm Beginning of Finnegans Wake:

... brings us by a commodious vicus of recirculation back to Howth Castle and environs.
  1:53pm Caryn:

Missed the beginning of the marathon, but what they hey, here now. (Was visiting family. But I did do a fair share of WFMU pimping to all the family, so here's hoping you have 4 new listeners... And possible pledgers. Incidentally, carried my toiletries in a plastic bag from a Howth fish mongers.)
  1:53pm Billy Jam:

hey where's the "LIKE" button here?
  1:55pm KP:

I see Peter has given into the Linsanity.
  1:56pm Caryn:

Hi, Irene! Yay, a shout-out. I'm blushing here...
Avatar 1:56pm bw:

go Irene and Billy Jam - so great to hear the two of you
  1:56pm Caryn:

WFMU: the "Hotel California" of radio. You can never leave.
  1:58pm KP:

That sounds like the place where Barney was playing. We spent 10 days in Howth then got married in Dublin. In 10 days that will be 12 years ago.
  2:02pm glenn:

will jim price meet his pledge objectives?
  2:02pm Andrew:

Irene, Thanks for the Smoke Fairies!
  2:02pm Caryn:

TV is on, showing a concert from the small Irish town of Dingle. Volume is turned down to listen to WFMU.
  2:04pm Sean in Bristol, UK:

This year's pledge will put my WFMU t-shirt collection up to 22, do I get a "Sad Git of the Day" award for mentioning this?
  2:10pm Mr Blackwell:

No, you make the best-dressed list.
  2:13pm KP:

Stood on dingle beach
And cast in wild foam we found atlantic bass
  2:14pm KP:

Dingle is sweetest place.
  2:14pm oazar:

OUI !!! ;)
  2:18pm Sean in Bristol, UK:

I was conceived in Dingle apparently
  2:19pm Mr Blackwell:

But that does *not* make you a Dingleberry...
  2:23pm KP:

i can't conceive of that.
  2:24pm Robert:

I bet Jim Price has reached his program's 1st week marathon goal already, and they're just waiting to announce it.
  2:25pm mark:

wfmu rocks, i'll pledge as soon as i get paid, is the marathon one or two weeks?
  2:25pm G:

two weeks
  2:25pm conrad:

  2:26pm Mike East:

@mark - you don't have to pay immediately - you can if you're able, but they will send you a bill if you don't.
  2:29pm KP:

Irene and Scott could make Bob Geldof like Mondays.
  2:30pm dc pat:

I'm back, gawd work is excruciating right now...
  2:31pm T-Zero:

Speaking of MC5... Michael Davis just died on Friday...
  2:34pm KP:

I saw them in 72 as an opening act. No idea who the headliner was.
  2:35pm KP:

I am going to post a pic of Mary Jo and the cat sleeping on couch unless she matches my pledge.
  2:37pm KP:

Mike East: They dont take credit cards on phone but can you immediately fulfill a pledge using the automated system of would that screw things up.
  2:37pm Robert:

Does KP's cat have a credit card?
  2:38pm Mr Burns:

@KP: Blackmail! EX-CELLLL-ENNNNT...
  2:42pm KP:

She cant use it unless she puts more in the kitty.
  2:44pm Caryn:

TV has ruined "Bird On a Wire" for me. I can't hear it without thinking of Edina Monsoon reciting it on "Absolutely Fabulous".
  2:45pm glenn:

i friend of mine got a rescue kitty and changed her name to mastercard after a week, and 2500 dollars in vet bills.
  2:46pm glenn:

changed the cat's name, in case there was any ambiguity.
  2:48pm KP:

  2:49pm KP:

It is coming down when Irene signs off. Don't let Peter see it.
  2:50pm Caryn:

KP, that photo is just cute! Not prime blackmail material...
  2:52pm Caryn:

I suggest finding some embarrassing childhood pics or geeky school photos to put more pressure on MJ.
  2:53pm glenn:

hey, downton abbey rocks. in a sedate british upper class kind of way.
  2:53pm KP:

I will call on her behalf right now.
  2:55pm Upstairs Downstairs:

@glenn: mais où sont les neiges d'antan
  2:57pm kat330:

Thanks for the music, Irene!
  2:57pm KP:

I dood it.
  2:58pm glenn:

there's no snow here, that's for sure.
  2:58pm KP:

  2:59pm KP:

Thanks Irene!
  1:29pm Van in DC:
