Avatar 5:35pm Billy Jam:

In a sort of thematic continuation of last week's "R.I.P. RAP" show this week's show - while featuring mostly living artists - is dedicated to two slain greats: Mike DREAM Francisco and Plan Bee. Plan Bee was killed 20 years ago while his partner in art and music DREAM was killed exactly 12 years ago to this day on San Pablo Ave in Oakland in an armed robbery. The City of Oakland named this day Dream Day. Last night was the big Dream Day 12 celebration at the Oakland Metro Operahouse. From the early '80s, DREAM was a pioneering Bay Area graff writer and ever since his murder on February 17, 2000 at age 30 his legacy has grown by leaps and bounds. On today's show I will honor DREAM's legacy (as well as that of Plan Bee) by playing excerpts from a KUSF interview I did with him 20 years ago in 1992 in which he talks about many things including the murder (about a month earlier) of his very good friend/artistic collaborator Plan Bee - the emcee/graffiti artist & fellow Hobo Junction member whose real name was Jesse Hall and who would be honored in most of DREAM's art work from then on. In a dark chilling coincidence of this on last week's radio show I played back an old Mac Dre interview from that same early 90s period. In that interview Mac Dre was still mourning the murder of his good friend/artistic mentor The Mac. The scenarios are eerily similar since, like Mac Dre who honored The Mac and then became victim of gun violence himself, DREAM too would later be shot and killed in an act of senseless violence.

Peace Billy! I remember the Dream & Spie rooftop that would greet you as you entered SF from 101 North. So ill. Ran for years. Was very lucky to be coming up in the Bay Area graff scene when Dream was rocking hard.
