You see a blanket on the ground. It's your favorite color, smooth and soft. You can sit on it, or lie on it. It's a flying blanket, and you are the pilot. You are in control. You can fly anywhere you wish, just by thinking about it. You are the pilot.

Listener comments!

Mon. 1/30/12 9:06pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Good evening, Dan.
  Mon. 1/30/12 9:06pm G:

Is standing over overrated?
  Mon. 1/30/12 9:07pm G:

or underrated? Discuss.
  Mon. 1/30/12 9:09pm PB:

Love the Spacemen (and Spiritualized). Great start.
  Mon. 1/30/12 9:10pm Gs:

This show rules already
  Mon. 1/30/12 9:10pm Josh:

Not that u or anyone else should care but I'm at the gym listening to the show on my iPhone and hoping for some good music to work out by.
  Mon. 1/30/12 9:13pm 12539:

"Most of my life has been spent not understanding, and I can assure you, it was not easy." RM Rilke
Avatar Mon. 1/30/12 9:14pm Dan B:

@Josh, I assume "Come Down Easy" is pretty good workout music. As will be the PTV3 to come soon. @G, standing is definitely overrated and underrated at the same time. There should be a compromise between acting in the public benefit to resolve a dispute and being barred from asking for court action on a matter that is of no direct concern to oneself. Oh wait, did you mean the other kind of standing? It's been a long coupla weeks at work! @PB, Ken in HP, hello!
Avatar Mon. 1/30/12 9:15pm Dan B:

@12539, great quote. I agree. But it's still overrated, as is easiness.
  Mon. 1/30/12 9:18pm PB:

DB, you're short dissertation on "standing" brought back bad memories of 2nd year civil procedure.
  Mon. 1/30/12 9:18pm REM:

@Dan B: Now face west!
  Mon. 1/30/12 9:20pm other david:

also listening on my phone, but reclining lazily on a couch and reading Dubliners. great start to the show Mr. Bodah!
Avatar Mon. 1/30/12 9:27pm Dan B:

@PB, those were bad memories: it should have been taught in 1st year Con Law. @Other David - appropriate position for my listeners! The gym's good too, though...
Mon. 1/30/12 9:27pm the glowing one:

psychic tv are so horrible lately. lately as in the last 25 years
Mon. 1/30/12 9:29pm Van in DC:

Huh. Who knew? I think I might like this show.
Avatar Mon. 1/30/12 9:30pm Dan B:

@glowingone - that's funny, I was just thinking to myself how impressed I am with this new lineup and how vital Gen's new music has been with PTV3 after a long mediocre spell through all the rave stuff and its aftermath. I love these last few Vanity Case releases. The band he's got playing with him now is just really really good IMHO
Mon. 1/30/12 9:31pm the glowing one:

@dan: at least the band is good ;)
  Mon. 1/30/12 9:31pm PB:

Not to be confused with "Almost Cut My Hair" by CSN (or was it CSNY?).
Mon. 1/30/12 9:31pm Van in DC:

Wait. Overrated and Underrated at the same time? What's that? Ken's show?
  Mon. 1/30/12 9:32pm LOLcat:

Avatar Mon. 1/30/12 9:34pm Dan B:

@Van, no that's me all the way -- don't you know this is the 7th or 8th Best Show on WFMU? @Glowing One, yeah, it's true Gen's voice is older now -- but s/he's using it like a real artist who's gotten old, and working with what it is. Much better than trying to listen to Mick Jagger, who's about the same age I reckon. I like old people who keep on keeping on.
  Mon. 1/30/12 9:36pm cpr:

never heard Grails before...
think they may be my new favorite band
Mon. 1/30/12 9:37pm Van in DC:

7th or 8th best? On Monday? (ducking) heee heee...hey I just found you. Seems I'm doing that all the time these days around these parts though.
  Mon. 1/30/12 9:39pm Manolo:

Oh God. Today is already monday ?
Avatar Mon. 1/30/12 9:40pm Dan B:

@CPR, they're great, I definitely shd play them more
  Mon. 1/30/12 9:43pm Thierry:

Hello all you music lovers. I read the polemics on the accuplaylist. I tend to melt as soon as two notes follow one another. Sound and dance even before one employs the word music.
Mon. 1/30/12 9:47pm Van in DC:

Julie is the BESTEST. She is why I found you guys. She has "Nick the Bard" coming in. Hmmph. I'd rather see DJ Bronx Elf :)
  Mon. 1/30/12 9:49pm PB:

All kidding aside, what does "remastering" mean? I have about 4 different CD versions of Surrealistic Pillow by Jefferson Airplane (all supposedly "remastered", "half-speed mastered" or re-done in some other way) and I admit that I can't hear any difference. Maybe my ears are just not sensitive enough, I don't know.
Mon. 1/30/12 9:50pm Van in DC:

Dunno who "Nick the Bard" is, but DAMN IT! I'll probably have to listen to GTDS stream tomorrow during the day instead of my normal archive catch-up of Dark Night of the Soul :(
Mon. 1/30/12 9:51pm Van in DC:

Oh wait...isn't Trouble back this week?
Avatar Mon. 1/30/12 9:55pm Dan B:

@Van, I meant the 7th or 8th best show in this timeslot on a weeknight on WFMU. I might be behind myself in the ranking, by my quick thumbnail calculations.
Mon. 1/30/12 9:57pm Van in DC:

Well met :)

Actually, you are quite wonderful, if I might say so after just discovering your show. What took me so long?
  Mon. 1/30/12 9:58pm Thierry:

Thanks Dan; even though we have the program schedule which resizes so well in the navigator, it is always helpful to hear upcoming news about the radio. For a foreign (french) speaker, Chris T's show, for example, is a great resource of English language and humor.
Avatar Mon. 1/30/12 9:58pm Dan B:

@PB, re remastering: my understanding is that it involves a lot of cleaning up of the original tapes and using various techniques to clarify the sound and produce a finished product with a much more robust and present sound than what could be created at the time of recording (either due to technological or money constraints). At it's most basic it would involve creating a new album by playing the masters on better equipment and filtering the sound through better equalization equipment to reduce hiss, let bass notes blossom, etc.
Avatar Mon. 1/30/12 10:00pm Dan B:

@Thierry, I had a Haitian roommate of your name once. Agreed that Chris T's program is excellent.
Mon. 1/30/12 10:00pm Van in DC:

You nailed "remastering" pretty good there.
  Mon. 1/30/12 10:01pm Bill:

Great set!
  Mon. 1/30/12 10:01pm PB:

Thanks DB and Van, that explanation definitely makes sense.
Mon. 1/30/12 10:06pm Van in DC:

@PB oh not me...Dan did all the work :)

@Dan - What? You have never played Kitaro?
Avatar Mon. 1/30/12 10:09pm Dan B:

@Van, what?! I haven't? I'll have to rectify that oversight TONIGHT!
Mon. 1/30/12 10:10pm Van in DC:

I came up the escalator from L'Enfant plaza once here in DC (where Joshua Bell played incognito) and a musician was playing a Kitaro tune. I stopped, listened, enjoyed. When he finished, I walked up to him and gave him a $20 bill and said, "I LOVE Kitaro!". Goodness did his eyes light up, and not by the 20.
  Mon. 1/30/12 10:16pm Ayres Buenos:

I almost quit my job to go see Magma in DC in 2010. I'd just come back from a month's vacation and couldn't get the day off.
Mon. 1/30/12 10:18pm Van in DC:

Great. Just what I needed. ANOTHER WFMU show that I really like. Sigh.

It's a plot...a conspiracy I say! WFMU is intent on sucking in all of us to most every show so that we have no other life!

Oh well. It could be much worse. But still, I have PART of my life to myself HA HA HA! ...oooh, wait, what's that next show coming up again....?
  Mon. 1/30/12 10:22pm Parq:

Van, I speak from experience when I say, if you're going to have something that doesn't allow you to have any other kind of a life, WFMU is a better choice than whatever's in second through sixth place put together.
  Mon. 1/30/12 10:22pm Parq:

Daniel, was that live track with the chorus the Magma track?
Mon. 1/30/12 10:25pm Van in DC:

@Dan - check out "In Person Digital" by Kitaro sometime. Amazing.
  Mon. 1/30/12 10:26pm Manolo:

man, the voice of Catherine Ribeiro is pure magic.
Mon. 1/30/12 10:26pm Van in DC:

@Parq - thanks, I'm starting to figure that out :)
Avatar Mon. 1/30/12 10:27pm Dan B:

@Parq, yeah, that was the Magma track -- it was from the Trilogie box set, which is 3 CDs of the band playing the whole cycle of Theusz Hamtaahk, Wurdah Ztah, and Mekanik Destruktiv Kommandoh.
  Mon. 1/30/12 10:27pm Alicia Renee:

oh this Catherine Ribeiro + Alpes is fantastic! i love racking up the sonic discoveries during your show Dan, *thank you*
Avatar Mon. 1/30/12 10:27pm Dan B:

@Manolo, she's something, eh? I've been trying to remember to play this one for a while now but it keeps slipping from my mind. Finally remembered tonight!
  Mon. 1/30/12 10:28pm Thierry:

@Van - I know what you mean. It's getting "worst" lately, which means of course incredible; coupled with the fact of getting to know every host better.
Avatar Mon. 1/30/12 10:28pm Dan B:

@Ayres, I hope you kept the job for a while after that just to make it worthwhile to have missed Magma! @Van, thanks for the high praise, much appreciated.
  Mon. 1/30/12 10:29pm T-Zero:

@Alicia Renee: I agree!
  Mon. 1/30/12 10:30pm 12539:

I have a nightmare in which Ken decides to give each dj an additional show on the webstreams, and then wfmu is competing not only for all my time, but with itself.
Mon. 1/30/12 10:33pm Van in DC:

@12539 - I already have that competition problem between GTDS stream and live stream during Doug and Amanda's shows... :)
  Mon. 1/30/12 10:36pm PB:

Hopefully this doesn't go to his head or anything, but in my opinion DB has the most consistently interesting show on FMU.
  Mon. 1/30/12 10:37pm PB:

I love Patti but Radio Ethiopia was always my least favorite of her albums.
  Mon. 1/30/12 10:39pm T-Zero:

@PB: Somehow I think I've missed ever hearing this album.
  Mon. 1/30/12 10:39pm PB:

Or at least her 70s albums.
  Mon. 1/30/12 10:40pm PB:

2nd release, after Horses and before Easter.
Mon. 1/30/12 10:41pm Van in DC:

@PB - well, I like it so far during First Listen. And he HAS played Kate Bush...that's a plus. But never Toyah, nor Kitaro nor This Mortal Coil? But on the otherhand, he HAS played Klaus Schulze and TD...well...we're crossing a few genres there admittedly... :) oooh, hey, how about David Sylvian...? ..check, played. +1
  Mon. 1/30/12 10:41pm T-Zero:

PB: I always think these are earlier than what they are...
Mon. 1/30/12 10:46pm Van in DC:

@G - is standing over *what* overrated? or underrated?
Mon. 1/30/12 10:49pm Van in DC:

ha ha ha! Air Supply...yep, Arista indeed. Just sayin'
  Mon. 1/30/12 10:51pm G:

@Van: Gotta check Westlaw to see if the statute of limitations has expired on that yet or not.
Mon. 1/30/12 10:54pm Van in DC:

Okay, Mr. Dan, nice show, I like it. Must go, but will definitely get a second opinion tomorrow courtesy WFMU's magical archive genie. Plus, I want to see if you actually WILL play Kitaro. I double dog DARE ya :)

@G - Expired, I think.

@T-Zero - wow I've only seen you on archive playlists on Julie's show I think. (Me as the archivist late commenter, not you)
  Mon. 1/30/12 11:00pm Thierry:

I'm trying to remember the name of a steel drum musician I saw years ago. Solo artist I think, very avant-garde - experimental, American probably. Tough question since I don't give many elements. Any help?
  Mon. 1/30/12 11:01pm T-Zero:

@Van in DC: Heh, you never know where I'll turn up on WFMU. It's the blackhole of the internet for me. Sucks me in and never lets go...
  Mon. 1/30/12 11:04pm T-Zero:

@Van in DC: ... I've been missing her show recently though... sleep unfortunately required now and then
  Mon. 1/30/12 11:08pm PB:

Ah, the Red Krayola. I always thought Captain Beefheart was pretty weird (and then I heard these guys).
  Mon. 1/30/12 11:21pm penelope:

hi honey I'm home
Avatar Mon. 1/30/12 11:25pm Dan B:

Hey darlin'. Are the suitors safely tucked away?
  Mon. 1/30/12 11:26pm Thierry:

I just found it! 20mn of brain raking, helped by Airborne Event's inspiring music: it's David Moss. A quick search thereafter showed that I had completely forgotten the vocal aspect.
  Mon. 1/30/12 11:28pm penelope:

yeah, all handled for the evening. did you get my txt? I "handled" that too.
Avatar Mon. 1/30/12 11:30pm Dan B:

@penelope - damn you are butch! I guess you *do* have the training, though, right? All OK?
  Mon. 1/30/12 11:31pm penelope:

ha. like falling off a log really...
Avatar Mon. 1/30/12 11:33pm Dan B:

@Thierry, nice! I'm checking him out right now.
Avatar Mon. 1/30/12 11:37pm Dan B:

@Thierry, we have his album My Favorite Things. I'm going to play a cut before the end of the show.
  Mon. 1/30/12 11:38pm Alicia Renee:

Oh hell yeah It's Monk Time!!
  Mon. 1/30/12 11:43pm Thierry:

Wow! Thanks!
  Mon. 1/30/12 11:43pm Marmalade Kitty:

hilarious cover lol
  Mon. 1/30/12 11:44pm Mugsy:

Geez, that was a ride.... nice.
  Mon. 1/30/12 11:46pm Marmalade Kitty:

one of princes best songs off his best album lovesexy!
  Mon. 1/30/12 11:48pm Marmalade Kitty:

I'm not a prince fan.. honestly! no shame here!
  Mon. 1/30/12 11:48pm Alicia Renee:

@Thierry fantastic suggestion--great addition to the show! (& to my ever growing list of fascinations)
Tue. 1/31/12 10:06pm Van in DC:

Kitaro. The most awesomest artist that even WFMU continues to not play.
