I loved it when they used "Wishing on a Star" as the theme music for "The Tenth Kingdom".

Kurt, I am making sure to catch the show live this week so as to avoid absolutelty confusing the hell out of myself.

This is quite different then all of the Anthony Braxton I've heard, which is a lot. Interesting. It's like an instrumental Luc Ferrari.

I'm gonna fly like a toucan, in a gif!

Hi DJKG and all! Sorry for tuning in late but the mail brought a tax matter requiring immediate remedy.

Who would win in a fight: A Toucan or an American Bald Eagle? (also, I just now learned that Toucan is not spelled, Tucan)

This really sucked though. I'm beginning to believe no accountants in any company have the foggiest notion of math.

Eagle size, beak and talons win pretty easily I think, unless toucan can go all bulldog with the bill and grab eagle neck for thirty minutes.

This song is pretty much the perfect match for today's gif
  3:31pm

The toucan pins the eagle down with its beak/bill/whatever and then force-feeds it Froot Loops until the eagle dies of an intestinal blockage. And dammit, MinnJeff got to the Froot Loops ahead of me!

Caryn:

I suppose the toucan could tag team the eagle with his 3 nephews (seriously, why do all famous cartoon birds seem to reproduce by producing a trio of nephews or nieces out of thin air?)
  3:41pm
Minnesota Jeff:

Are you expecting Toucan Sam's Nephews to be around all the time? The Toucan Sam's brother or sister must be out of town and he is watching them.
  3:42pm
Carmichael:

Good afternoon KG and listener posse. I'll kick back and enjoy the shrieking.
  3:43pm
Caryn:

Oh please, like we ever see the mysterious brother or sister any of these nephews or nieces belong to... Donald Duck has been taking care of his nephews for decades now.
  3:48pm
Caryn:

If The Toucan Sam was just watching his nephews for a little while, he seems to be kinda irresponsible about it, taking them on global adventures to fight mad scientists, alien monsters, pirates, karate-fighting koi, etc. It's as if he's taking nephew-rearing advice from Scooby Doo.
  3:50pm
The Montescoobi School:

Ruh-roh.
  3:53pm
Minnesota Jeff:

Huey Dewey, and Louie's father is dead I assume. Donald is in the Navy and can only see them on shore leave, thats why they live with Scrooge McDuck - who can at least provide for them with his millions. Toucan Sam probably isn't the more responsible uncle, sure, he's always getting into a mess. But when you need a sitter, you need a sitter.

@bill: Did Biden's plugs look ok on tv?
  3:58pm
Caryn:

We never see Donald's dad, either. He's Scrooge's nephew. As is Donald's cousin Daffy. And Daisy Duck is taking care of her nieces. I'm starting to suspect all cartoons in their off-screen time live on a compound, where everyone is given to their uncles or aunts to be raised. And the less said about the cartoon, where they explained the origins of Donald by having his egg fall from a tree (why the heck would a duck be nesting there?) and landing on the road in front of Scrooge's car, who apparently babynaps Donald and raises him. Except as "his nephew". WTF!?!

Ended up on a list of Finnish metal bands. Funny how the names range from OTT ones like Anal Desecrating Penis Mutilation (really?) to low-key ones like Asianajaja, which just means "lawyer". Ooh, Lawyer... How very heavy metal!
Avatar 4:26pm
DJKG:

lawyer - ha! kind of an awesome name for a metal band.

Well, lawyers clearly are Satan's minions, so in that sense it's an excellent name for a metal band.

hey! a dear friend of mine really IS a vegan lawyer -- practices in Seattle and she is freakin' awesome -- "animal litigation front" :) -- i do not think she is into black metal though . . . btw, UNDOR means "disgust, loathing, abhorrence" in Hungarian (ahhhhh i LOVE our *special* sense of AESTHETICS!)

kat, decided to google Hyvinkää, and they seem to love appropriating famous names for their own uses. For instance, they have a whole part of town (including a nature reserve, sports centre and spa) called Sveitsi ("Switzerland") and an annual music festival called Woodstock.
  4:55pm
kat330:

J.T. just arrived home and will probably reply, but when I asked him about the Woodstock, that was news to him. I remember going to a great natatorium in the Switzerland area.
  4:57pm
Caryn:

The full name is Willatehtaan Woodstock. Apparently, the local Lions Club organises it.
  4:58pm
Caryn:

kat, is the Switzerland area at least hilly? Do they make watches or good chocolate?
  4:59pm
J.T.:

Hi everybody! Looks like I missed some good toons, but I'm sure it'll keep up! And yeah, Finland is just as bad repurposing names as the US is. We have Warsaw somewhere close by here in midwest USA.
  5:00pm

www.woodstock.fi will tell you all about the festival
  5:00pm
kat330:

I don't recall any hills, but it's J.T.'s hometown and he'd know better.
  5:02pm

Sveitsi is 'finland hilly' meaning it's a tiny bump in a mostly flat area.
  5:03pm
kat330:

Besides the indoor water park, I mostly remember how quiet our walks in the woods were (in May), never catching sight of woodland creatures or hearing birdsong. Around here, the woods are bustling with fauna and birdsong even in colder months.

hallo hallo DJ KG, feels like I haven't had a listen since 2011. Show's in fine form today.
  5:11pm
Caryn:

@kat: considering how much Bacharach Costello has covered, I think you need to be more specific.
  5:16pm
kat330:

Oh, I thought he'd kept it to one album. I love EC, but wasn't so pleased by his covers.
  5:16pm
Aaron Burr:

He just completed a tour (out here, anyway) that included a bunch of Bacharach and others that I don't believe are yet recorded.

i prefer when elvis c. covers george jones. his version of "it's been a good year for the roses" is fantastic.
  5:23pm

When I saw him at the Louisville Palace in 2000 he sang no Bacharach as I recall. My fave was always "Anyone Who Had a Heart," the Warwick version.

Richard from Venezuela:

Hi Kurt and all the listeners.
  5:25pm
Caryn:

D'oh! that should be "only ONE"...
  5:25pm
kat330:

I've always favored songs that change up the rhythm midstream as well as flipping between major and minor keys.
  5:25pm
The Damned:

EC also did a great cover of "Neat Neat Neat" back in the day...
  5:27pm
Carmichael:

@DJKG: Yikes, his love affair with Bacharach goes back that far? Considering his own material and his cultural stance, that comes as a surprise to me. I did see him sing a slow solo piano version of Accidents Will Happen that put a whole new spin on the song.
  5:27pm
kat330:

One of my fave EC songs is "Shipbuilding" -- such a sexy song counter to its subject matter.

According to Clive Langer, he'd written the tune for Robert Wyatt but wasn't happy with the lyrics that he had written himself. Langer played the tune to Costello at a party hosted by Nick Lowe, and within days Costello had written lyrics he described as "the best lyrics I've ever written".
  5:35pm
Carmichael:

Hugh Masakela is one of my trumpet exceptions.
  5:36pm
Caryn:

That's kinda like David Bowie's lyrics to the French melody that was then given different lyrics by Paul Anka and became "My Way". It's fun to hear the Bowie version: instantly recognisable melody, unexpected words.
  5:36pm
kat330:

They are great lyrics, but I've never been sure how well they fit the languorous music. I mean, I include Shipbuilding on my list of "in the mood" songs.
  5:38pm
Caryn:

@kat: hell, I include Radiohead's "Fake Plastic Trees" in my list of "in the mood" songs, and the lyrics really don't fit into that.
  5:38pm

I suppose "diving for pearls" could fit that mood, but not the main thrust, ahem, of the lyrics.

@glenn: Really? Really, really hate? I could see how it could be played to be hated, but man, can it be played to be LOVED as well. The trumpet is mostly too blunt a sound for me. I like the low, soft brass, like French horn, or the soft woodwinds like oboe and bassoon. I blame Profofiev's "Peter and the Wolf" for that.

kat330:

Well, I know I'm J.T. soul mate, and on an earlier playlist you claimed to be his, so well, do the math.

J.T. (Finn):

I like trumpet on Miles Davis' Bitches Brew and Saxophone on Wreckless Eric records... all I can come up with on short notice.

kat330:

But having said what I did about the trumpet, please listen to that bit in "Shipbuilding" -- will give you the shivers if you let yourself be taken under by the tune.

Caryn:

@kat: I think there's a "Parent Trap"-like long lost twins thing going on... That or one of us has ESP powers and has unwittingly contacted the other.

"call in and be intelligent and engaging"

I can visualize their jaws hitting the ground in tandem.

I take it this isn't Warren Smith of Ubangi Stomp & Uranium Rock fame!

Caryn:

@kat: damn right about "Shipbuilding". But you did say that it was "mostly too blunt a sound", so that leaves room for occasional exceptions.

Kurt could actually do some loud construction in and around the studio they will be in. Get a saws all and a hilti hammer and loud away.

The shivers and the bends. :)

Can't rule anything out since it was Philip K. Dick (speaking of Elvis C.) that was responsible for J.T. and me meeting. An old tag of mine is: When finally their minds' eyes met, it was love at second sight.

kat330:

Kurt, you are soooooo cool -- thanks for abiding us!

Good move, Kurt! Thanks for a great show.

Macchiavellian plot development, Kurt! Sun Tzu would be proud.

Caryn:

Satan approves your skills, Kurt, and will have Carmichael draw up the proper legal documents to hire you into his minions.

Moon Tzu:

Macchia is well and has a plot here.
