Live Performance by Alana Amram & the Rough Gems (Adam Amram, James Preston, Alana Amram, Jim Campilongo)
With a stark voice that creates a fragile, intimate presence Alana Amram grew up immersed in music as the daughter of esteemed composer/ writer /poet David Amram and playwright/songwriter Lora Lee Ecobelli. Alana's band, The Rough Gems, were named after a phrase her father often used: “look for the diamonds in the sidewalk.” Amram's own delicate songs take on a rowdy, rawkus spirit, and on her latest album she covers the music of longtime Fred Neil collaborator Vince Martin. Alana Amram and the Rough Gems played live on Irene's show.

Listener comments!

  12:01pm Van in Dallas:

This should be fun. Hi Irene
  12:07pm Irene:

Hi Folks! Today will be fun, with most of the music comin' off a lot of scratchy 7" discs. And there'll be a live performance by Alana Amram and the Rough Gems, who are warming up in the Love Room. Please pledge your support to WFMU's stealth fundraiser, Shock & Awe-tober.
  12:07pm northguineahills:

Never heard of Apothecary Hymns, very nice.
  12:09pm Sean Gostage:

Hi Irene and Good Evening to all your wonderful listeners
  12:11pm Irene:

Apothecary Hymns is from Brooklyn. Search the WFMU website and you can find an archive up featuring their live performance on this show from a few years ago.

  12:20pm Dead Corporate Eyes:

Cheval Sombre gets my early vote for "mellow and dark tune of the day"!
  12:21pm ranjit:

Ha! I was just a few minutes ago listening to the live version of "No One's Little Girl" while walking my dog.
  12:25pm Van in Dallas:

Got you in the 90s anyway :)
12:28pm formerly known as the soundguy at the court taver:

Tiny Lights, yeah!
  12:43pm 12539:

parts 1 & 2 - does that mean you have to flip it over?
  12:46pm Van in Dallas:

That was a fast flip!
  12:46pm Irene:

  12:48pm 12539:

Bonus points for playing both sides.
  12:50pm Jay/ London:

loved day in the life will have to get it
  12:53pm Craig Witty:

Just got off the phone with Vince Martin....when does Allana play?
  12:58pm Robert:

  1:08pm Craig Witty:

Wow! Tremendous. No one captured South Florida like Vince
  1:08pm Jay/ London:

  1:13pm Van in Dallas:

We're here :) Sounds great!
  1:15pm Craig Witty:

I used to see Vince play at "The Flick" back in the 60s and he was a major influence on me. I just sent him a guitar as he has not had one for a while. I hope to get up to NY to see him play with Alana. How about playing "Jasmine" Alana??
  1:27pm Clay:

Sounding good Irene. We love you!
  1:36pm Craig Witty:

Thank you Irene for featuring Alana today and Thank you Alana for bringing Vince Martin back.
  1:40pm Van in Dallas:

Really enjoying this live set. Thank you for visiting WFMU Alana & Rough Gems.
  1:50pm Craig Witty:

Thanks for the "Thanks" folks. Anything I can do to help Vince is an absolute pleasure. He told me once he works the rust out on the guitar he's going to play with Alana........can't wait for that!!
  1:51pm Robert:

Since when do lips feel sweet & warm from the sea?
  1:51pm Robert:

The music's pretty, though.
  1:52pm Craig Witty:

Spend some time in Coconut Grove, Robert......that's when.
  1:53pm Irene:

Oh, I've found just diving in the waves at a beach will bring up the sweet and salty taste.
  1:57pm Craig Witty:

Oh Thank you!!!
  1:59pm 12539:

Thanks Irene & guests.
  2:02pm Van in Dallas:

That was awesome!
  2:03pm Craig Witty:

Just wonderful.......Thanks again Irene, Alana and the band. And Thanks again, Vince for sharing your talent and vision with us.
  2:09pm Van in Dallas:

If I hadn't already donated more earlier this very presentation, I certainly would be rushing to do so now, just for that really great live set :)
  2:14pm Van in Dallas:

  2:14pm Ken:

Hey folks - Irene is only $60 away from her goal! That's only four people pleddging $15 each. Which also of course means that those four people received WFMU Miracle Soap. Show some love for Irene, the only WFMU DJ who can DJ and soundcheck all at the same time!
  2:15pm vinyl snob:

holy groove damage Joni!
  2:15pm G:

And we have a three-digit percentage!
  2:15pm Van in Dallas:

Wow! Thermometer just pegged!
  2:15pm frenchee:

  2:16pm Ken:

  2:16pm Craig Witty:

Done.......the goal has been reached.
  2:17pm Dead Corporate Eyes:

  2:17pm slugluv1313:

omg THANK YOU. IRENE!!!!!!! i have always loved Ms. Collins' take on "Who Knows Where the Time Goes?"
  2:18pm Irene:

Wowee! I'm really touched, everybody. Ken, maybe you'll have to up my goal. I still have one more week of this, an Matthew Sweet will be my guest next Monday.
  2:34pm Hugh:

Good afternoon Irene,
Great that you made your goal! Question, Is Alana Amran any relation to David Amran?
  2:35pm v k:

this week in rock-u-mentaries - thought George Harrison (Scorsese) was quite good - certainly led to a deeper appreciation; thought Pearl Jam (Cameron Crowe) was pretty good too, although i stopped watching when it reached chronological pt where i stopped digging their work
  2:37pm Yarler:

Would rather see a documentary on Layne Staley. RIP
  2:38pm zoot:

Yow. I heard the first note of the Theme fromCuckoo and knew exactly what it was. Haven't heard it in about 15 years. Thanks for the abreaction.
  2:38pm Billy:

Sounds like the scene where Big Chief throws the sink through the glass. I am perpetually haunted by Nurse Ratchett.
  2:39pm still b/p:

"Let's hear it for Bullgoose Randall, back in action. Nice shirt, Cheseroo."
  2:39pm dave in vermont:

did the webcast break?
  2:39pm Brass Knuckles:

Someone's radio show needs to start and finish with the intro/out theme from this soundtrack.
  2:40pm In Defense of Ratchett:

Nurse Ratchett was widely misunderstood. I think she was sincere and believed in what she was doing, and was pushed to her limits.
  2:40pm v k:

agreed on Layne Staley - just reading his Wiki page blows my mind
  2:41pm Dead Corporate Eyes:

the WIMP stream stopped working, not sure if it's back yet.
  2:41pm I am Joe's Kidney:

Layne, best vocalist of the grunge lot.
  2:43pm Irene:

Yes, Hugh, Alana is David Amram's daughter.
  2:43pm Mickey D:

100% Trudel. I'm Lovin' it.
  2:44pm Dead Corporate Eyes:

....WiMP is still not working
  2:45pm Elvis:

I am in Kalamazoo.
  2:46pm Irene:

We're looking into the stream outage
  2:47pm Jack Sheldon:

Remember me?
  2:51pm Adler:

The dialup streams are back, but y'all should treat yourselves to the Flash stream. You deserve it.
  2:54pm Irene:

Can't place you, Jack.
  2:56pm Jack Sheldon:

I was the bandleader/trumpeter on the Merv Griffen Show.
  2:57pm Van in Dallas:

Love this song! Laura and Joni all in one show!
  2:57pm Irene:

Oh, cool! I Used to watch the show a lot when i was a kid. Nice to have you here!
  2:58pm Van in Dallas:

Who was it that just played this same tune in the past week? Either Amanda or Julie.
  2:59pm abby in france:

yes but it was not the same singer.
  2:59pm 2 Lazy 2 Google:

Didn't McCartney write a Three Dog Night hit?
  3:02pm Sir Paul:

THis is the song.

  3:02pm Van in Dallas:

Great show, many thanks Irene!
  5:39pm don:

Irene- You are so amazing for giving Alana all that radio time. I think she is a 1st rate songwriter and growing before our eyes--
  4:26pm J.J.:

"It's For You" is credited to Lennon-McCartney and was recorded by Cilla Black several years before 3DN's version.
Picky note on the Lovin' Spoonful: shorter song title, just called
"Rain On the Roof."
