  11:52am
Van in Dallas:

Oh what the heck. Let's get the Scenario started early :)
  11:52am
listener james from westwood:

good wednesday to all!
  11:53am
Amanda:

Van, what a good idea! Glad you're listening!

Good Wednesday to you too lJfW!
  11:53am
Van in Dallas:

Greetings listener james, Amanda! And Doug if you're lurking out there :)
  11:56am
Van in Dallas:

Is this one of Wade Mainer or Wardell Quezergue on trumpet that Doug referenced in the newsletter just sent?
  11:57am
Amanda:

Let's see if Doug can answer that :-)
  11:58am
Doug S.:

Actually, it's Ahmed Abdullah on trumpet. I LOVE pre-show chatter!
  11:59am
Brian in UK:

Well howdee doodee. Brighten up my day Amanda.
LJfW homemade tomato sauce with pasta, mushrooms & talegio tonight. When I get off my arse! (ass)
  11:59am
Van in Dallas:

I love pre-show trumpet :)
  12:00pm
Brian in UK:

Oh and a bottle of Peroni, that's got the food &
drunk sorry drink out of the way.
  12:00pm
Van in Dallas:

you bet!
  12:01pm
listener james from westwood:

Dinner seems distant right now—swamped with work—but I will eat vicariously through that excellent-sounding spread, Brian!
  12:02pm
Doug S.:

Screeching Weasel played on Pat Duncan's WFMU show back in the late '80s/early '90s.
  12:03pm
Brian in UK:

Sorry James forgot you are 5 behind. It's been what I believe you folks call peach(e)y here today, Wind has dropped at last.
  12:04pm
Carmichael:

Hi Amanda, hello Amandonians!
  12:06pm
Amanda:

Hi Brian! Hi Carmichael! I'm so hungry, but luckily heading to New Orleans tonight and will probably eat right away once there.
  12:07pm
Carmichael:

Wow, New Orleans! Sounds like a blast. Say hi to the crawfish for me (the ones I DIDN'T eat).
  12:09pm
Brian in UK:

Amanda, remember dear to eat little and often. I do worry about the meals you eat or don't.
I think you've just made everyone jealous with the New Orleans comment!
  12:14pm
jill:

my unsolicited recommendations: Dante's Kitchen (shrimp and grits) and Parkway Tavern (Roast Beef and French Fry Po-boy) and anything from Liuzza's on Bienville.
I'm just saying...
  12:15pm
Doug S.:

Please Fed-Ex me an oyster po- boy or maybe some crawfish étouffée—or maybe both. Definitely both.
  12:15pm
Amanda:

Thank you, Brian -- your concern is heartwarming! As are your recs, jill! :-)

I almost forgot to say hi to Doug -- how styupid of me...
  12:16pm
Amanda:

Doug -- yes, I will. Or will at least show you a photo of one or both.
  12:17pm
listener james from westwood:

there's an american copy editors society meeting in new orleans in march or april '12 ... never been to the big easy, and i'm contemplating using that as an excuse.
  12:17pm
listener james from westwood:

brian, i've been 5 behind for most of my life. only the unit of time has changed!
  12:18pm
Doug S.:

You are many things, Amanda, but never styupid.
  12:22pm
efd:

Woe betide the person who accidentally refers to that meeting in New Orleans as the American Copy Editor's Society meeting.

PS - Hi Amanda! Nice score on the Manitoba's Wild Kingdom CD!
  12:24pm
Carmichael:

Naw Lins.
  12:25pm
jill:

new OR-lins, please. It's easier on the ears.
  12:28pm
Doug S.:

My mother-in-law (born and raised on Oak Street in Carrollton/Uptown) pronounces it "New OAR-lee-uns."
  12:29pm
Carmichael:

A 2 Fay.
  12:33pm
Amanda:

I think it's my mom who pronounces it New OrLEENS, and I always flinch when I say it that way. But she is Dutch so I forgive her.
  12:33pm
Van in Dallas:

Nothing but a yummy Jimmy John's sub for me for now
  12:34pm
listener james from westwood:

I knew a guy with the last name Bontemps. I always wanted to refer to him as [first name] Goodtimes, Mob style, but this guy was the saddest sack in the history of sacks.
  12:35pm
Fiveash:

Just discovered that the Camellia Grill is only open until midnight tonight! What are we gonna do? Maybe early to bed and four meals tomorrow?
  12:36pm
listener james from westwood:

love and rockets: they occasioned my first visit to a college radio station. heard "haunted when the minutes drag" at boston college, was stunned, walked down to wzbc, asked the dj what was playing. none of your fancy accuplaylists in 1987 (shakes cane at kids on lawn)
  12:36pm
Carmichael:

Great, now I'm tasting Andouille sausage in my mind. Damn, I'm hungry ....
  12:37pm
jill:

fiveash - right around the corner is the reliable Cooter Browns for all of your late night fried food cravings
  12:38pm
Doug S.:

There was tawk of Gallatoires on Facebook last night. In the old days, we used put out our Gallatoires ashtrays for company. Now no one smokes anymore.
  12:41pm
listener james from westwood:

the legacy infrastructure of smoking is fairly large. i know there are tons of ashtrays lurking in my parents' house. no way to repurpose those!
  12:42pm
Fiveash:

Thanks Jill! Are they open all night? There's also the St. Charles Tavern down the street from where we're staying. Not exactly Galatoire's but open 24 Hours...
  12:44pm
Amanda:

lJfW -- I knew there was a reason why you are a faithful listener to this programme. That sounds very similar to a lot of my own stories about listening to college radio and being nosy.

Hi efd! Now if only the Copy Editors' Society conference and the Ponderosa Stomp could happen at the same time so they could put correct punctuation into everyone's song/record titles...
  12:46pm
Van in Dallas:

smoking. hmph. Sept 27th will be 1 year cold turkey quitting after being a 2.5 to 3 pack a day smoker, and smoking for 27 years. Hey gotta run Amanda...online training class starting :( Have fun in Nawlens
  12:46pm
Amanda:

jill, feel free to recommend more eateries as they come to your mind. We are going to be hungry and/or frustrated by airport food
  12:47pm
Carmichael:

You know Cat Stevens wrote this song, right?
  12:47pm
Greengrocer's Apostrophes:

Hey, we have to make our living's, too! Punctuation incompetence's are covered under the ADA.
  12:47pm
efd:

@Amanda I'm having visions of copy editors with Sharpies roaming around Ponderosa Stomp and correcting records, posters, etc. Have a great time! (That goes for you too, Fiveash.)

Hey, I have that Tremeloes single!
  12:48pm
Carmichael:

Fat Harry's is also very close to where you will be. Open late. And the F&M Patio Bar.
  12:49pm
efd:

oh... I don't have THAT Tremeloes single. <upturned nose>

Did you subtly play that in honor of New Orleans? TREME-loes? OK, probably not.
  12:51pm
listener james from westwood:

aw, you're making me blush! if i were really smart, i'd have asked the station mgr if they had an air slot open or needed an intern.
  12:51pm
Mike East:

good one, efd. Nice show so far Amanda.
  12:54pm
Brian in UK:

Carmichael, you are right Cat Stevens wrote it & I bought his first LP with that song on it with money from my paper round. My first record. Still sounds good.
Hello John got a new motor. He works on the Thames Barrier.
  12:54pm
pgw in mntclr:

this Alexei Sayle fellow sounds like an axe-wielding maniac
  12:56pm
pgw in mntclr:

[drinks some Coke from a random can]
  12:56pm
listener james from westwood:

from across the room, i heard this and said, "is that jerzy balofsky from 'the young ones'?" yes indeed!
  12:57pm
Brian in UK:

He was the landlord in The Yong Ones. A stand up with Marxist leanings from Liverpool. That was 20 years ago.
  12:58pm
Brian in UK:

Well spotted James, make that 30 years ago.
  12:58pm
Amanda:

Er... yes! TREMEloes, exactly.

Hi Mike East and pgw in mntclr! I'm happy to be in such kindred, Young-Ones-loving company.
  1:00pm
jill:

Amanda- i could give you tons of restaurant and club recommendations. But to spare you of a huge laundry list i will give you two not to miss:
1. Willie Mae's Scotch House
2. Bayonna
If anyone tells you "Oh you must go to Commanders" look at them and tell them "If i wanted to eat at a chow hall, i would have stayed in Jersey and eaten at Denny's"
  1:01pm
pgw in mntclr:

"Oi! Up Scumbag!"
  1:02pm
Juan de San Antonio TX:

Great set Amanda, making cleaning the house a hell of a lot easier. Where's the New Orleans music? The Sissy Nobby?
  1:03pm
Carmichael:

Oh my God! My favorite band of all time! The friggin' Tubes!
  1:04pm
Lizardner Dave:

Actually I thought Commander's would be an overrated tourist trap but was surprised at how good the food was the first time we ate there. So much so that we have gone back a couple times. Willie Mae's does have very good fried chicken but the service can be spotty. Bayona is nice as well. However my can't-miss recommendation is that you go to any one of Donald Link's places. Cochon Butcher is my favorite but try to go in between the lunch and dinner rushes otherwise you'll have quite a long wait.
  1:04pm
listener james from westwood:

i met an fmu volunteer who had an intricately—one might say grotesquely—detailed vyvyan tattooed on his calf.
  1:05pm
pgw in mntclr:

oh my.
  1:05pm
listener james from westwood:

ps. vyvyan from the young ones and klaus nomi have the same hairdo.
  1:06pm
Carmichael:

I belive this is the 1st song on the 2nd side of Remote Control.
  1:09pm
Amanda:

Hi Juan! Nice to hear from you! I am going to leave the NO music to the experts and confine NO topics to the non-musical aspects of the show.

Speaking of, I'm amazed by how many food recommendations I have gotten, with almost zero overlap from person to person.
  1:12pm
jill:

I love the Nobby/Big Freeda Bounce scene! Very jiggly.
  1:12pm
Carmichael:

Get out of my iPod, Amanda!
  1:13pm
Amanda:

You got your iPod in my radio show!
  1:14pm
Doug S.:

Get off my (sound)cloud!
  1:15pm
Amanda:

OK, that is Schulkind 1, Nazario 0, Carmichael 0.
  1:17pm
Carmichael:

Is that considered cloud computing, Doug?
  1:17pm
Lizardner Dave:

Just read back upthread - I think the branch of the Camellia Grill they opened at 540 Chartres is open past midnight. As least I hazily recall it being the case last time I was down there in January.
  1:20pm
Doug S.:

I love learning new lingo like "upthread" (and soundcloud) from all you young listeners.
  1:22pm
Brian in UK:

Blue sky thinking, Douglas my boy.
  1:22pm
listener james from westwood:

out of the mouths of babes: technology neologisms!
  1:22pm
Lizardner Dave:

I'm flattered but also 44 years old.
  1:25pm
listener james from westwood:

i'm 42 but i'm younger than my hair.
  1:28pm
Mike East:

whoa - no FCC on alternate streams...woohoo!
  1:29pm
The Dogs You Walk:

Do the extra hour already. We promise we won't pee on the rug!
  1:30pm
pgw in mntclr:

One of my favorite Strapping Fieldhands songs!
  1:30pm
Carmichael:

You're all a bunch of young punks.
  1:32pm
Brian in UK:

Some great group names today.
  1:33pm
Carmichael:

Brian, did you mention Shropshire the other day? I was wondering if Fairport's annual reunion takes place there.
  1:37pm
Brian in UK:

No Carmichael, it's in Oxfordshire by the Oxford canal in Cropredy just north of Oxford. I had to dash away so never finished talking to Scott. Shropshire is a county where nothing much happens, I like it, people drive around in 30 year old cars. It's not like a Talking Heads song about Heaven though.
  1:39pm
Carmichael:

OK, thanks. Kind of like Carmichael, where I live ...
  1:40pm
Doug S.:

Every show this week on Give the Drummer Radio has played FCC-verboten material. I'm so fucking proud!
  1:43pm
Brian in UK:

It's not grown up and it's not clever. Schulkind report to the cycle sheds after class.
  1:43pm
Amanda:

You don't say, Doug! I was listening to Tony Coulter's show yesterday but didn't catch it. I think Mike East was shocked that I actually SAID the F-word. Apologies if I offended Brian with that.
  1:45pm
Hugo:

Did someone mention The Tremeloes? That takes me back a day or two. Here comes my baby. Silence is golden. Even the bad times are good. Etc. With or without Brian Poole?
  1:45pm
Brian in UK:

Great show today. Have a FAB break. Eat Lots, then eat Lots wife.
  1:46pm
Doug S.:

Well be sure to check out "Letter to a Teenage Daughter" on Tony's archive. (Second selection of the show.) Being that you are someone's daughter, it may make you blush a bit.

http://wfmu.org/playlists/shows/41878
  1:47pm
Brian in UK:

Did these boys do Younger Girl?
  1:49pm
Carmichael:

Yes they did, Brian. They also did Mr. Dieingly Sad.
  1:49pm
Carmichael:

Hugo, Brian Poole was their lead singer for all of the big hits, if I recall correctly. He went solo toward the endof their peak period.
  1:50pm
jill:

Amanda etal. - One more thing in NOLA tonight. Head to the Maple Leaf, see my friend Ragan behind the bar and dig on Upclose & Personal with Cornell Williams & Big D from the Absolute Monster Gentlemen - dat's some badass late night music for ya.
  1:53pm
Lizardner Dave:

Love the Maple Leaf. Jacques Imo's next door has pretty good food too though it's a bit more touristy since the owner's been on every food show about New Orleans for the last decade.
  1:53pm
Lizardner Dave:

Love the Maple Leaf. Jacques Imo's next door has pretty good food too though it's a bit more touristy since the owner's been on every food show about New Orleans for the last decade.
  1:54pm
Hugo:

Poole left in 1966. Those three I mentioned were all 1967.
  1:55pm
jk:

more anecdotes!
  1:55pm
Carmichael:

Really?!? Well, back to the research documents for me. Thanks for the lesson!
  1:56pm
Brian in UK:

The Trems took on a singer called Chip (cause he was a carpenter) as the lead singer cannot remember his second name. This is from memory.
  1:57pm
Doug S.:

New show on GTDR starting presently. I am previewing a test program now. More news SOON!
  1:57pm
Carmichael:

Thanks, Amanda. Have a blast!
  1:58pm
pgw in mntclr:

have a safe but fun trip
  1:58pm
Brian in UK:

More Tuvan noseflute, please Doug.
  1:58pm
listener james from westwood:

travel safely and enjoy the trip, and of course thanx for today's show!
  2:05pm
Amanda:

Thank YOU lJfW and everyone!

I just now righted the erroneous playlist data about the Baby Harp Seal song that I had misidentified as being by Polaris. I am S-M-R-T. Talk to you all soon!
  6:43pm
Belated Listener Schned:

3 hours of Nazario Scenario ? An idea whose time has come !! Explain to work that this will increase productivity across the entire WFMU economy !
Have fun in N'Awlins, if ya cain't be good, then be careful- Hearts, BLS
  7:05pm
Parq:

Howdy, Miss A. Listening on the 'chives late in the evening at work. A shame, coz I can't turn it up the way it deserves. You're playing lots of my faves. I haven't even thought of "Squabs on Forty Fab", let alone heard it, in decades. Enjoy N'Awlins.
  10:39pm
Amanda:

Thanks to you belated listeners, Schned and Parq! I'm back from NOLA now and can't wait to tell everyone about it (well, about some of it) tomorrow. xoxo.
