  7:13pm

Had to figure out how to get the MAC going on the show - only to discover someone had turned the volume on the speakers down.

Looking forward to an evening with Mo.
  7:13pm

Good evening Monica and all the listeners.
  7:46pm
frenchee:

my dad..died in 1994. We hadn't spoken for several years. I have regrets about that.
  7:47pm
cb1:

Once my Dad made up his mind about something, he never once changed it.
  7:49pm
frenchee:

@cb1, is that good?
  7:50pm
CB2:

Fondest memory: Papa and CB1 walking arm in arm chatting and laughing up a storm. Something he could never do with me.
  7:50pm
cb1:

Also, near the end of his life he became obsessed with the bible - not in the sense of blind faith, but digging to know what EXACTLY he could count on being true. Don't if he found anything or not,
  7:51pm
Don (Minister of Propagramr):

Dad was at my nephew's HS graduation this past week. We were having a post celebration at 2nd ave deli. He was about to make one of his ethnic jokes to the Asian maitre d. My sister shushed him. So I whispered in her ear "Seinfeld, party of four!"
  7:51pm
Listener Shcned:

Mo, Thank you so much for the 'memoire' about your Dad and the tree. Lifelong Knickerbocker here, but I do love my Shee-CA-goh connections, god bless ya.
Anything from 'My Fair Lady" available now or on a future show would just take me & mine back to the days when my Dad and Mommy were still focused in on having a hot date- Je (heart) vous et votre broadcast!!
  7:52pm
cb1:

frenchee - sometime, not always
  7:52pm
texas scott:

my Dad passed 3 years ago.not a day goes by that I don't think of him.

  7:54pm
cb1:

  7:56pm
texas scott:

my honeymoon with wfmu is over.
but I keep coming back for some monica.
hola,cbs!
  7:57pm
bruceleh:

I could write a book about my dad.
An angry, emotional vituperative book it would be.
He recently turned 80 and started showing advanced Parkinson's (he was a dry cleaner, exposure to perc is correlated with Parkinson's).
The doctor told him within 6 months he wouldn't be able take care of himself.
Now you have hear my father, in his grub Bronx accent "Ain't no one going to be wiping my ass!"
He didn't want to swallow pills, he thought he might vomit them up, he told my brother, "I'll just go down to the meter room and blow my brains out."
So a few days later, my brother gets a call, from my father's next door neighbor in his condo, he had left a note on their door saying "Please call my son, and tell him to meet me in the meter room."
  7:59pm
frenchee:

wow, Bruceleh, you should read Tana French's FAITHFUL PLACE.
(no relation)
  7:59pm
CB2:

SOTW?
  7:59pm
Don (Minister of Propagramr):

Hey Scottso. Mo - Do you sometimes find yourself thinking of that Don Amache dance scene from Cocoon.
  7:59pm
hellbilly13:

Lost my dad 4 years ago & miss him a lot. He survived the D-Day invasion, and a broken neck from a mid 50's car wreck, and just seemed to shrug it all off.One tough SOB! Hats off to ya,Pop!
  8:00pm
frenchee:

nothing like Spike Jones to lift the spirits
  8:01pm
joerg:

this sounds better on radio than in person, great musical though, go see it
  8:02pm
Davided:

Spike Jones segueing to Book of Mormon--this dad has finally wiped away his tears from listening to your story about your dad and is smiling and thanking God he has thoroughly indoctrinated his kids in the religion of atheism...
  8:03pm
monica:

hi dale, ever think he knew that life after retirement wasn't for him and perhaps wanted to check out?... Hello Richard from Venuzuela!...Frenchee, so sorry about that. No resolution... CB1, stubborn Yankee, huh?...CB2, really? I really think you must be so much like your dad in some respects....Don, your dad was a famous cantor, no?... Listener Shcned, thank YOU! No My Fair Lady tonight but will play soon....
  8:04pm
Windy City:

My dads favorite song:
"Manhattan" by Rodgers
  8:07pm
dale:

no mo, he was excited about retirement - treasured his cheap mantel clock and photo shaking the hand of his shift supervisor. talked of coming to visit me in bklyn. it was just 50 years of a couple packs of kools a day that did him in. he was a good guy that just worked (and smoked) himself to death.
  8:07pm
cb1:

My dad's fav song was "I never Promised You a Rose Garden" until he heard My My Way. He had the church organist play it at his funeral.
  8:07pm
Davided:

Book of MorMON
  8:09pm
Maggie in Rock Tavern:

While driving around and listening to the radio, Xray Burns played some Sinatra song, don't know what, but it brought up a long lost memory of being 5 yrs old and my father singing me to sleep with "Somebody Loves Me, I Wonder Who". Later I listened to it via youtube and noticed it was uploaded last year on Sept. 27. My dad died in 1974, on Sept. 27. The coincidence freaked me out a little at first.
  8:10pm
cb1:

Mo, I still can't get over Don Ameche! Right upstairs. And Bob Newhart. Wow
  8:11pm
trishh:

I liked watching hockey and going to games w/ my dad. He never cheered when someone got socked.
  8:11pm
Don (Minister of Propagramr):

Yeah - he be. Thanks for noticing. An inglorious bastard. 300k hits on youtube. A war hero and first to hold religious service from behind enemy lines and broadcast coast to coast on NBC. I actually interviewed him for the Ken Burns bumper (NY War Stories).
  8:11pm
CB2:

I remember as a kid we always had to be on alert when Papa was driving.
He had this tendency to get lost in his thoughts and veer off the road and take down a mailbox.
In those days, you just kept on going. It was only a mailbox.
  8:13pm
cb1:

cb2 - I can just see that. Did Mama ever say anything?
  8:14pm
dale:

@ bruceleh - your father chose his own time. as messy and painful as that must have been for everyone else, i kind of envy his balls for that.not trying to sound callous at all.
  8:15pm
frenchee:

CB2. yer killin' me. Just a mailbox indeed.
My dad loved sports cars. he had an alpha romeo, several mustangs, a few sporty convertibles.
And also a big-ass buick you could barely see his head over the wheel (Dad was short).
  8:15pm
trishh:

He was long in patience whenever he was teaching us how to do something new and always in a rush otherwise. Simple guy wrapped in a complicated history. I rejected the big rush in my life but proud of the good stuff I got from him.
  8:16pm
frenchee:

bruceleh, did he really do it? Or was this an elaborate ruse?
  8:16pm
CB2:

Jimmy! Pay attention.
It never bothered him - he would just take a deep inhale from his pipe and forget again that he was driving.
.
  8:17pm
monica:

T'Scott, this one's fer yer pops, bro... bruceleh, now THAT sounds like quite a read, thanks for sharing.... hellbilly13, your dad wasn't from the whiner's generation like us!... frenchhe - damn right, lady... joerg! yeah, haven't seen it, prolly won't but love that track...Davided, yes!... Maggie, le=ovely memory, m'dear....
  8:18pm
cb1:

CB2 -and that's why it's so hard to find a good gardener.
  8:18pm
CB2:

Don't go there!
  8:19pm
trishh:

Some sense that auto-driving cars were on the horizon?
  8:20pm
Fiona DeWitt:

Swoonin' to the Kordt Sisters.
  8:20pm
cheri:

greetings monica--please tell me if you have any spike jones JR tongiht???
  8:21pm
aido:

cb1, cb2.....
"you two act right or imma turn this car around!'!
  8:24pm
bruceleh:

No, he really did it.
My brother is a cop, and while he wasn't the first cop to get there, the other cops waited for him to let him see the body first. Weird.
  8:25pm
Fiona DeWitt:

Stop it!

I have work to do.
  8:26pm
cheri:

if you dont mo,, no prob have a great night!!
  8:29pm
frenchee:

oh bruceleh.
I feel yr. pain
  8:31pm
Irwin:

If you're taking a listener census, count this household in Hoboken.
  8:34pm
trishh:

The big rush in my dad also made for good supper time sideshows. He'd plunk a plastic container down and say, "Look what I just took out of someone's throat/ear/nose" Good haul over the years -- chicken bones, jacks, peanuts, bbgun shots. Little kids did the most nose and ear shoving..
  8:34pm
Cold Sesame Noodles:

Somewhere, Sugar Chile Robinson is patting his foot.
  8:35pm
monica:

Irwin, duly noted...
  8:36pm
CB2:

Too many double entrendes here for me to deal with.

WHAT A SHOW (sorry for shouting).
  8:36pm
cb1:

trishh - that's funny, and surreal
  8:36pm
Randy in NC:

Wow, Deaf School!!
  8:36pm
G:

FWIW, "Canto de Iemanjá" on http://miadoitodd.com/ is a capital I, not a capital L.

The Yoruban/Brasilian goddess's name is spelled Iemanjá or Yemanjá. I lived in Brasil for awhile... And I know typicalgraphic errors make Irwin's eyeballs throb.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yemaja
  8:37pm
bruceleh:

It's ok. The few minutes I cried after hearing about it, was only tears about all the pain he caused in our lives. So, for me anyway, it wasn't very painful (there had been more than enough of that growing up), it was a great relief to know he wasn't in the world any longer. He was a psychopath. I had recently finished 13 years of intense psychotherapy, and one thing that was still bothering me was, after my father turned 80 in Feburary, was 'would he call me?' (I hadn't spoken to him more than once in over twenty years) What would I say to him? I don't think I could have remained emotionally stable after such a call. But he didn't call, despite never having seen his youngest granddaughter, but this was typical of him.
  8:38pm
dale:

someone i went to college with jumped into the niagara river and was swept over the falls just after graduation. two people i got to know upstate here put a gun barrel into there mouths. you never know what pain someone is feeling. it;s a miracle any of us make to a natural end.
  8:38pm
#K:

I don't know what's going on on this playlist comments but I just want to say this last set was incredibly fun & amazing & kept me from leaving my apartment
  8:40pm
cb1:

brucelleh - I dedicate Deaf School to you.
  8:43pm
dale:

nite mo and gang. gotta get up super earlyzzzzzzzzzz
  8:44pm
G:

Father's Day = Group Therapy :-)
  8:46pm
cheri:

monica you know it's kinda funny that fmu dee jays have the music of spike jones and not SPIKE JONES JR. what do you think??
  8:47pm
CB2:

Oh Mo.
Too much.
How do you do it?
Is that all there is?
  8:47pm
Davided:

You know, sometimes we appreciate Dad because he saved us from Mom, sometimes vice versa. sometimes they trade off the savior/homicidal maniac role, which is what Republicans probably mean when they talk about nuclear family values... Anyway, this song is so perfect if you suddenly don't know what you think about anything....
  8:48pm
Irwin:

Peggy sounds off. What is she ON?
  8:49pm
Cold Sesame Noodles:

I just called my pops this evening. He'll be 92 this year. Quiet fellow with a punster's razor wit. Was a awarded a Silver Star for bravery during a particularly hellish stretch during the Battle of the Bulge. (Received a Purple Heart, too, but was always kind of embarrassed by it, considering so many who didn't make it and never wore the medal.) Used to tell me all about seeing Billie Holiday and Louis Armstrong and Jack Teagarden and so many others on stage in small clubs in Washington, DC.. My love of jazz comes unabashedly from him. He worked for years at the FCC and then later at a communications law firm, but I don't think that has much connection to my love for radio. Monica, on the other hand, has everything to do with my love for radio.
  8:50pm
Don (Minister of Propagramr):

@ Cold Sesame Noodles - was he part of the 3rd wave?
  8:53pm
Cold Sesame Noodles:

He was one of the first American into Germany. Was a forward observer with a tank unit (5th Armored Division). He would radio back the coordinates for the big guns.
  8:54pm
monica:

Cold Sesame Noodles in the house! Yay!....CB1/2, yes... Randy in NC, hell yeah!... Thanks, G! Too many copy ediators on staff and in the listening audience! Gal's gotta be on point ... Irwin, no way. This is from her "Natural Woman" album...Dale, Bruceleh - I'm glad you both went there here.... #K, thanks for tuning in!...
  8:56pm
Don (Minister of Propagramr):

I echo an earlier comment - great group therapy show. @ Cold Sesame - My dad was part of the 3rd wave in the first division (gunner) infantry. He had to hide behind dead bodies for cover to make it up that God-forsaken hill.
  8:56pm
trishh:

Kooks
  8:56pm
hellbilly13:

Thanks for a great sho, Monica!
  8:57pm
cb1:

An amazing show, Mo - both to listen to and to read!
  8:58pm
CB2:

Guess we all move on into the night.
WOW.
  8:58pm
Cold Sesame Noodles:

Wonderful wonderful show, Monica.
  8:58pm
