Welcome back, Billyjamicus Maximus!

Oh, and... not even close to first comment! Woo hoo!
  3:24pm
Carmichael:

Hey ya, Billy. Hi, every person.
  3:26pm
Cecile:

I think old-school hip-hop was also stronger on album because 1) they didn't know if each record would be their last, and 2) they had to cut it live.
  3:29pm
Cecile:

the album won't die, as Chuck D has said, as long as it's a collection of tracks. If you need it to be a continuous experience, you'll have a more limited audience. Other people are cool with that. Steven Wilson from Porcupine Tree chopped up his 1st solo album into 50 tracks that you had to play in order.
  3:30pm
schizflow:

that bit about taking the music out was interesting, but simmons says a lot of unfortunate things about business and entrepreneurship
  3:31pm
Cecile:

schiz, I used to watch Kimora's show because she's a trip, but then I realized that that luxury she had was built on the backs of folks that probably deserved it more.
  3:32pm
Dan Charnas:

@schizflow like what?
  3:34pm
chris:

In the back row, with the sun glasses on, but yeah, I'm here... Thanks for schoolin' me, Dan and BillyJam.

Dan, I was at home ill when you came to Bookpassage at SF Ferry Building a while back. Sorry to have missed you, but happy you're here now.

My son B says, "hey."

it's a combo of new age self-help babble and business strategy. it denies and allows a connection between the two. and it's a giant ego trip
  3:39pm
Dan Charnas:

@Chris from Book Passage! Love you! Give "B" a pound for me!
  3:40pm
Dan Charnas:

@schizflow INteresting...'splain "denies AND allows"
  3:42pm
Cecile:

Peronally, if new jack swing would come back, I wouldn't be too terribly upset. I still have a thing for LeVert.
  3:42pm
schizflow:

because he says that one isn't the other, but if you have your spirit in order, wealth can follow. that's almost verbatim from his appearance on bill maher last month
  3:45pm
Dan Charnas:

@schiz I think he DOES say the latter. He just doesn't promise that wealth ALWAYS follows spirit.
  3:46pm
Cecile:

Dan Charnas, did you work for Def American? When are they ever going to reissue the Trouble albums? :D
  3:48pm
chris:

"Thought I was a doughnut, you tried to glaze me..." Hell ya!
  3:48pm
Cecile:

Marley Marl = genius.

?:

where's the right channel. i double checked another radio station, it's you.
  3:56pm
Dan Charnas:

Cecile: Yes. But Def American no longer exists! So they are not releasing or rereleasing anything.
  3:57pm
Billy Jam:

re the right channel drop out - Homie (Azeem) bumped the tables -
  3:59pm
?:

damn get that boy a bubble suit :o
  3:59pm
Cecile:

I was clowning a bit. Although it would be nice if someone got the rights to those records.

Now, for me whenever rap intersects with dance music, I'm really interested and when it gets too far away from a strong beat it loses me.
  4:00pm
Julie:

Hi Billy, sounds like a party!

Shocklee is amazing, a real media polymath. You should follow @Shocklee on Twitter.

  4:09pm
jojo:

yes, totally back to high school, big effect on my weekend for sure
  4:11pm
schizflow:

think of how much more successful van halen would have been if they didn't sell all of their songs in reverse
  4:11pm
jojo:

true dat
  4:12pm
Cecile:

I remember getting a very old candy apple in a box with an advance tape of Candy Apple Grey.
  4:21pm
Cecile:

Dan, what was the record that first turned you on to rap?
  4:22pm
Dan Charnas:

@Cecile: LIke so many others, "Rappers Delight"
  4:22pm
paulshrug:

Bonita Applebaum's by Tribe Call Quest, isn't it? Flash says De La.
  4:23pm
Cecile:

Ah, yes. Same here.
  4:24pm
schizflow:

i thought you would have said small talk at 125th and lenox
  4:26pm
still b/p:

Can recall where I was when I first heard Rapper's Delight more than 30 years ago.
  4:27pm
Cecile:

sbp, same here. A rainy September in 1979, my sister's friend brought it back from Detroit. "What is this talking record?" I said. "It's fantastic!"
  4:31pm
seang:

Fat Boys!
  4:31pm
still b/p:

Would be funny if "talking records" had stuck as the genre ID.
  4:34pm
schizflow:

man those are fighting words. good riddance to you!
  4:34pm
chris:

Thanks, Dan, appreciate the indie bookstore shout. Amazon can blow me.
  4:35pm
Cecile:

I love that Too Short instrumental soooo much. Takes me back.
  4:36pm
schizflow:

me too. i only support independent ventures in industries that i'm not a part of
  4:37pm
Marmalade Kitty:

Awesome show Billy!
  4:40pm

@paulshrug: Yes, A Tribe Called Quest does sing Bonita Applebum.

schizflow:

"jesus walks...into Louis Vuitton" -russell simmons
  4:54pm
Marmalade Kitty:

This is a very, very twisted sinister story
  4:55pm
drew DeNicola:

this show is blowing my mind! i can't believe i never knew any of this. the story on tupac: how is that not more widely known?
  4:56pm
Ike:

No conspiracy needed. Music industry people and power brokers just have to believe that conscious stuff won't sell. So they don't want to put it out. Simple as that.
  4:56pm
schizflow:

is mf doom up there? not enough verse/chorus for you?!
  4:56pm
Dan Charnas:

Yes Ike!
  4:57pm
Cecile:

Gangster turned me off because they lost the dance thread.
  4:57pm
Cecile:

Actually, they covered the strange Tupac/Suge relationship on the MTV Behind the Music.
  4:58pm
Cecile:

Is this Air Cartoons Azeem? I have that one and enjoy it.
  4:58pm
femi:

shout out azeem & holly saucy! BAAAY AARRREEAAA
  5:00pm
chris:

@Ike, but isn't it true the music industry power brokers work for media companies now? Aren't they about selling advertising? Isn't advertising really about consumerism? Wouldn't Kanye sell a lot more products than someone coming up to the mic speaking about the lack of veggies in local stores in the projects? Dunno, just sayin, it doesn't have to *be* a consiracy to *look* like a conspiracy.
  5:00pm
Marmalade Kitty:

Sad.. really, Ike, thats mainstream bullshit for you
  5:01pm
greasesicle:

Hey I'm kickin in the east bay now. one of my peeve's when 'tupac' calls CA 'THE SUNSHINE STATE' in CA DREAMING. I have always thought he is an idiot since then. What do you think? (not troll)
  5:04pm
Ike:

@Chris, yeah, you could say it's almost like an accidental conspiracy -- consumerism pervades everything. It doesn't have to be planned in order to infect everything. In terms of conspiracies, the simpler explanations always make more sense to me.
  5:04pm
Cecile:

The history of radio in the US has been more about selling ads than promoting artists. If politics is hot, they'll play it. If escapism is hot, same thing.
  5:05pm
Cecile:

commercial radio, that is.
  5:05pm
Sean Daily:

@Ike: You realize that I'm a writer, and I'm going to have to steal "accidental conspiracy" from you.

Just a heads-up.
  5:06pm
schizflow:

so now consumerism is the enemy? a minute ago dan was lamenting the collapse of the industry
  5:06pm
Big Bad Conspiracy Controller:

We even create non-mainstream thinking fads and memes, to give the non-mainstream people things to do, and keep them from getting involved in and messing up our mainstream-focused money machine. BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
  5:07pm
Cecile:

sometimes art and commerce can intersect.
  5:07pm
greasesicle:

yeah GO GREEN because buying a 40,000 dollar car is better for the environment than the car i drive once a month
  5:09pm
Todd 76%:

Great sounds and thoughts today, Billy! Thanks....Azeem should contact D Cyphernauts if he wants to make a presentation in Southwestern CT (less than an hour outside NYC). They are a conscious MC duo who help promote real hip hop in CT. Besides being fine people they are both school teachers and have been holding monthly Enter The Cypher events for over five years now.
  5:10pm
greasesicle:

Test from phone
  5:12pm
chris:

@Cecile, absolutely! The dope beat behind that new Chrysler commercial about Detroit (who's Eminem's producer again?)... just sick beat. there's great cinematography, too.. kudos to those folks for bringing their art to a wider audience. but its commercial art, right? I don't think its "change the world" art
  5:13pm
Ike:

@Schiz, excessive mindless consumerism is always the enemy IMHO, but business, esp. small businesses can be brilliant and contribute a lot to culture and community too. In excess, consumerism ends up w/corporations running down unions and teachers, or w/everywhere turning into China- or Russia-style wild west gangster capitalism.
  5:14pm
Bad Ronald:

Dropping in to say thanks Billy Jam, Dan Charnas, Azeem, & Amkoullel for the tunes and sharing the knowledge. Bang up show as always Mr. Marmalade - Peace!
  5:14pm
chris:

Azeem! Crazy good cuts.
  5:15pm
Ike:

@Sean, joke is on you. That's a tautology. Anyway it was Chris's idea really.
  5:16pm
schizflow:

yeah. too bad china and russia can't steer their ship as well as the u.s., the country that has perfected the formula, and struck a perfect balance. that's must be the reason commercial rappers no longer have anything to rap aobut
  5:20pm
Ike:

Our balance is waaaaaaay out of whack IMHO. Need far more consciousness overall. I presume you are being sarcastic. Or jingoistic? Can't tell via online writing.
  5:21pm
channeling Dave Emoery:

@Ike: Good work, grasshoppah.
