crunchy snow:
hey guys, well i didn't have a d.j. nightmare per se. did just watch the adaptation of william gibson's 'johnny mnemonic' & then fall asleep & dream of.. ponds??! i think. maybe not worth describing...
Mon. 1/31/11 3:39am
numbing feet:
also woke up with 'sunday morning' by the velvets in my head & here's the very pretty video i found to accompany it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YuM3SteeAgY
Mon. 1/31/11 3:41am
cumulous clouds:

Mon. 1/31/11 3:43am
jj.:
hooray for cyberpunk nostalgia. sometimes i can't believe more william gibson novels haven't been adapted for screen. then i remember johnny mnemonic.
Mon. 1/31/11 3:47am
madrigals,:
totally-- it was on net flicks on demand-- that was the only reason. and i was sitting around wtih artists & they were like 'oh there's that movie robert longo made (wha?? where did that come from???) maybe we should watch it. and near the end flaming volkswagens start falling from the underground fort and that was everybody's favorite moment :-)
Mon. 1/31/11 3:50am
jj.:
holy PKD, robert longo directed that? wtf?! guess i saw it before i knew who he was.
Mon. 1/31/11 3:54am
under the bridge:
yeah-- i don't think i'd even heard of the phrase 'art world' when that movie was made-- '95? if you looked you could def. see his stamp-- like that a lot of the cyber deaths seemed to happen in baroque space, like his drawings generally do-- all flowy & loose & lost. but he def could've gotten more of a handle on continuity, character development et al.
Mon. 1/31/11 3:57am
jj.:
let's also not forget the johnny mnemonic pinball game: http://www.wunderkammern27.com/2007/06/mnemonic_pinball_507.html

movie cameras:
ah, that's totally hilarious! i gotta say i think the graphics in the movie (actually pretty fun!) had to have meant coexistance with pinball, now that ya mention it-- just look at that 1st photo-- it says; 'keanu reeves. hollywood. in a diorama':-) nice. also, nice n' out-of-order

fake blood:
oh these guys are fun. i like that they started making this smooth jazz music only in 1998: is that right?
Mon. 1/31/11 4:42am
jj.:
not sure i'd call them "smooth" precisely, but--yeah--sort of new york post-zorn downtown lounge stuff, though always got deeper/weirder when they played live.

greysoul:
You know, it's just like my Uncle Ned always said: "Smile and the whole dang world smiles with you. Stuttering works well, too."
Mon. 1/31/11 4:47am
violins:
yes, whoops-- i think i was blending the characters of the dudes with the music or something & came out with a misnomer: yeah. saw them play in meandering circumstances, like out on the streets, only, i think. good idea to go indoors to listen
Mon. 1/31/11 4:48am
pauldepiperssoninpurgatory:
brilliant stuff, the sound of art service, what wfmu is all about, great stuff. did negativland sample this. they did of course, christianity is stupid love it
Mon. 1/31/11 4:50am
pauldepiperssoninpurgatory:
escape from noise album. this stuff is incredible
Mon. 1/31/11 4:50am
jj.:
...and the movie ghostbusters. yeah. they, negativland sure did sample. ca't believe it's real. and that weird al is on the list.
Mon. 1/31/11 4:53am
pauldepiperssoninpurgatory:
me too. to be honest ididnt realise this was real. i thought negativland had constructed it inhouse, amazing.
Mon. 1/31/11 4:57am
costumes:
G! Your uncle taught you well. Guess those words of wisdom can also function like religion/cults? Stutter over a grocery store list of 'Evil' & you will both be stuttered with and against (sampled). 'Liked the heightening appalachian vocal part.
Mon. 1/31/11 5:01am
greysoul:
Exactly. In fact, Uncle Ned himself bought a 20 lb. can of electrode gel with royalties paid to him for samples of his own voice. I can't remember the recording project ... Mr. DJ probably knows.
Mon. 1/31/11 5:07am
pink snow:
Electrode gel... is that what one could use to safely convey the sample of one's own voice?
Mon. 1/31/11 5:08am
greysoul:
Ohh ... now, there's an idea.
Mon. 1/31/11 5:11am
snot:
Like, better than *without* the gel..., right?.
Mon. 1/31/11 5:14am
greysoul:
Exactly again. Which almost reminds me of something else Uncle Ned said, but I can't remember it exactly right now.
Mon. 1/31/11 5:19am
salty breath:
Wow: such similarity to Dustin Wong on this. Instrumentation, style, time signaturin' G: Keep a tab on that commentary & speak out when you recall!
Mon. 1/31/11 5:27am
greysoul:
Delicate Steve = layers of happiness! It's ... it's almost ... nope - lost it. I can't remember the Uncle Ned quote. To paraphrase an award acceptance speech Dylan once gave: "It's like my Uncle Ned used to say ..." [long, long pause ... rubbing of hat around on head ... focusing of eyes on award statue ... then lean back into the mic] "Well ... he said a lot of stuff, actually." Now, I wish I could remember when that was from. I had a TV at the time. Jack Nicholson presented the award. He was the straightest of the two. That's all I can tell you.
Mon. 1/31/11 5:46am
sunny teeth:
'Prolly that was from '91? Grammy's: Lifetime Achievement Award but funny, in the link I watched Nicholson congratulates Dylan on basically being a lyrical human being & then all Bob says is "well"... before the clip ends. Sums up the equation perfectly, no...?!
Mon. 1/31/11 5:50am
greysoul:
That'd be the clip - obviously recorded by a Jack fanatic. The "Well .." leads into the classic Dylan moment recounted above, more or less. Substitute "my Old Man" for "my Uncle Ned", as I recall. Much, much, much rubbing of the hat around on the head during the long pause.
Mon. 1/31/11 5:55am
soupy tongue:
I think I am within that interstitial moment right now: tried to remove sweater like half hour ago but it's still around my neck. Maybe an imagined Uncle Ned can collectively tell us a bed time story now. A very quiet, figeting one ;-)
Mon. 1/31/11 5:58am
greysoul:
Oh, man - you couldn't mention sweaters around Uncle Ned, either. He'd go right into the cold sweats. I never knew why. Something from his Vaudeville days, I always thought.
