Favoriting October 14, 2010: w/ Creative Commons' Eric Steuer [11a.m.]

At 11am ET, Eric Steuer from Creative Commons calls in to talk about the licenses that facilitate sharing, openness and innovation everywhere from The White House to Al Jazeera to Wikipedia to right here on the Free Music Archive.

Earlier this week, CBC Radio revealed that they will stop using Creative Commons music -- once a prominent feature of programs like Spark -- due to the usage restrictions of CC's more popular noncommercial licenses. A virtual riot ensued.

To gain a better understanding of the situation, we'll crack open CC's recent Study of How the Online Population Understands “Noncommercial Use”  and discuss how this might play into the future of Creative Commons. Speaking of The Future, the nonprofit organization is currently in the midst of their Superhero campaign.

Rael Imperial Aerosol King:

it's great to be back in NYC (or Dirty Schitty, at least)!

Thanks for the heads up on what time the CC segment goes. I don't want to miss it and now I can plan around it.

I'm saying hi/bye. I want to listen but the new Enslaved and Zoroaster call to me. Stay well!

Jason, was that Cairo antique shop (that you plundered) under the fly-over on the island Zamelik?
Selling England by the Pound had much more Gabriel content, I believe.

all the breaks/pauses in your speaking makes it too hypnotic.. it's putting me to sleep.. sorry :/
ALF of Hip Hop Slam:

"Bass Drums" is cool song! Hope that sucker is on vinyl
Cheri Pi:

I heart Joe Preston, he loves cats.

it's Gettovetts! i was just reading about them in 'how to wreck a nice beach' ... r.i.p RammellZee
dc pat:

I 2d the Tandoori Knights!
A listener:

The CBC creative commons controversy brings to mind a famous (if more localized) CBC-related incident documented on the FMU blog: http://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/2005/04/she_be_she_stri.html
dc pat:

I'm all caught up in Indian-Canadians right now..
Dr. Koper:

Keep it swinging! listening in Brussels whilst trying to map out voice routing system, don't get too frantic or will lose control of my collection of highlighting pens.

we are deeplz enjozing the big distance buyy here

you can also check http://www.jamendo.com/en/ for more free cc music

A good, thought-provoking segment. I'll probably want to go back and hear it again this weekend. Thanks for running it.

thanks Parq
and hey pyropingvin! yes jamendo is awesome and HUGE! they're on FMA's thread of favorite CC music resources -- feel free to add:

Thanks for the CC insights Jason & Eric. It helped sort out some of the grey areas for me w/CC licenses. Great points about how so much great material (audio, visual & data) has become visible and available simply because of the introduction of CC licensing.

I am glad you addressed the tension that sometimes arises between the wishes of artists and the expectations of free-information advocates. It's worth remembering that this is still capitalism, and even non-mainstream artists gotta make a living.
