A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Loretta Lynn carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

  Thu. 9/30/10 9:39am Vivivan:

I always tell my dogs if today is Thursday, tomorrow is Friday, on the brink of the weekend. They wag their tails, then again, they always wag their tails...
  Thu. 9/30/10 9:39am Bad Ronald:

  Thu. 9/30/10 9:40am dale:

  Thu. 9/30/10 9:40am Marco:

I live only a few blocks away from a bell ringing church. If I open a window I can hear the ringing!
  Thu. 9/30/10 9:42am Marco:

Oh:) trouble is a passive / aggressive woman. That's my kind of woman:-)
  Thu. 9/30/10 9:42am dale:

marco, is it a real bell, or one of those churches that use a taped bell and speakers?
  Thu. 9/30/10 9:44am Marco:

The old bell couldn't take that much ringing! So now the have huge loudspeakers with 500 watts of power blasting to the neighborhood:(
  Thu. 9/30/10 9:46am still b/p:

Even with an unfortunately lame accent attempt, Nat can sound gooood.
  Thu. 9/30/10 9:47am Marco:

Even the Lutheran church inside the cemetery where I take the Q38 bus uses loudspeakers. But the bell is still proudly displayed!
  Thu. 9/30/10 9:49am Marco:

Catholic high school. And across the street a Lutheran church and cemetery?

  Thu. 9/30/10 10:21am Nancy:

Bird Lives!
  Thu. 9/30/10 10:21am seang:

there's a cool arts/crafts/antiques market in boston called SOWA usually on Sundays May-October--old postcards and whatnot..
  Thu. 9/30/10 10:23am trouble:

o what color dansk? i do enjoy the yellow. how precious are you about the inside and its white level? plaid for Patrick?
  Thu. 9/30/10 10:31am ?:

You should play next "VIP" by Francoise Hardy, it goes "V....I....P......bienvenue à Paris Orly....." It's REAL cheesy.
  Thu. 9/30/10 10:37am Jennique:

Mornin' Trouble. Glad there is a group to preserve the Loews theater in Journal Square. I saw Beck there a while back, and he even sang without a mic, that is how great the acoustics are there. PLUS the Decor is beyond. It's just beyond.
  Thu. 9/30/10 10:41am Cecile:

damn! two for two! Thanks Trouble!!!!!!!

Looking forward to hearing you in your new home.
  Thu. 9/30/10 10:42am trouble:

good morning jennique! just beyond, yes that is a good description for loews!
  Thu. 9/30/10 10:42am trouble:

cecile< here you go!
  Thu. 9/30/10 10:44am Cecile:

this one of the best nuevo-girl group songs ever. And done by a really unlikely band. It's so cool.
  Thu. 9/30/10 10:52am Kayt:

oi antonio!
  Thu. 9/30/10 10:54am trouble:

bom dia kayt!
Thu. 9/30/10 10:57am Patrick and Emily:

we love yellow too!! the inside can be good to fair, but no chips, our dansk is chipped beyond use. yes plaid for Patrick
  Thu. 9/30/10 11:03am Kayt:

bom dia trouble!
(remember: antonio var-e-a-soish)
  Thu. 9/30/10 11:07am lewis:

what an interesting ahistorical perspective you have ms. trouble. I happen to agree, but what would your other-life professional colleagues have to say?
  Thu. 9/30/10 11:11am annie:

man it thrills me to get my brain stimulated by that kind of talk, trouble...words are incredible and powerful, huh?
  Thu. 9/30/10 11:12am trouble:

oh is it ahistorical? i don't think so. I think it is anti ownership in that there is never creating from an entirely blank slate...I am not horribly interested in a version of the world that holds up the concept of actual"truth" or originality" as something otherwise i imagine.
  Thu. 9/30/10 11:13am Cecile:

I like Twitter. But it's just a tool for gettin' things done. For me it's a news feed and the water cooler. it doesn't replace real human contact, but it's good for keeping in touch with far-flung friends, and tracking your interests.
  Thu. 9/30/10 11:13am Andrew:

Hey, speaking of ahistoricality, how come that Sonic Youth song didn't make it onto the playlist?
  Thu. 9/30/10 11:14am Nancy:

Cage Lives!
  Thu. 9/30/10 11:15am Peter:

Morning from the West Coast! Any chance of some Edith Piaf this morning ? Can't get her trilling R's out of my head!
  Thu. 9/30/10 11:16am Cecile:

trouble I think the debate is the conflict between innovation and tradition in African-American music. Do you go with Sharon Jones or Nicki Minaj? In my world, you should be able to have both. And people like Outkast, even Kanye get that.
  Thu. 9/30/10 11:18am Andrew:

Yeah, what's with this idea that one style excludes the possibility of another? There's plenty of room in the musosphere!
  Thu. 9/30/10 11:19am trouble:

oops breakdown of human function, if only i had a machine to replace me. Where did i play that sonic youth song?
  Thu. 9/30/10 11:19am Andrew:

I feel like it was right after Blossom Dearie. Could be wrong, though.
  Thu. 9/30/10 11:21am Cecile:

That's when it was.
  Thu. 9/30/10 11:26am trouble:

merci bien !
  Thu. 9/30/10 11:26am Andrew:

Thanks, Trouble.
  Thu. 9/30/10 11:31am trouble:

i don't think the debate is between new and old but is it "valuable" to consider that new is better than old. that model supports capitalism in the constant quest to replace and buy new. But the thought of originality is used as the hook, where it actually isn't the issue.
  Thu. 9/30/10 11:35am Cecile:

I don't know. I love old, but seek out the new. I get bored easily, and I don't believe it is capitalism, but rather how my brain's wired.
  Thu. 9/30/10 11:36am Cecile:

Or change a few letters, and you have "weird"
  Thu. 9/30/10 11:37am Andrew:

Yeah, that's interesting. Obviously, there has to be SOME innovation, or a culture stagnates. But when the new is necessarily better, you get undiscriminating capitalism, which is what we kind of have now.
  Thu. 9/30/10 11:41am Vivivan:

Sounds like Siouxsie Sioux..
  Thu. 9/30/10 11:42am Cecile:

really? I think I'm seeing in certain circles there not only being more innovation, but more discrimination. People seem to be freer about saying "NO" to that which thay don't want. Cafeteria Capitalism.
  Thu. 9/30/10 11:42am don:

"better" is such a subjective term though.. likewise "truth" "originality" "valuable" (been in the background working/listening.. amazing set trouble)
  Thu. 9/30/10 11:43am Andrew:

Maybe they only have the freedom to say no because there's so much to say yes to now.
  Thu. 9/30/10 11:45am Cecile:

Interestingly enough, Justin Timberlake said something to that effect about his generation having to choose what's worthwhile because there are so many options.
  Thu. 9/30/10 11:45am trouble:

very key point andrew. that is the supposed basis of the revolutionary nature of technology: access to sooooo much: fill in the blank. as if volume was more important than quality...
  Thu. 9/30/10 11:46am Andrew:

Yeah, it kind of pisses me off when I think about how much digging I had to do in my youth to find anything interesting. I wonder how much kids actually value what they find before they're on to the next thing.
  Thu. 9/30/10 11:46am Vivian:

Due to the internet, we have access to so much more music. Whereas twenty years, one can only search out different music by scanning the left of the dial.
  Thu. 9/30/10 11:46am Cecile:

But there is quality and volume. Think of a collector uploading all his/her rare jazz records. There's no corporate interest, and yet it's an overwhelming amount of content.
  Thu. 9/30/10 11:47am Cecile:

That's right, Vivian. Or mixtape from your fanzine friends. Or mail order records.
  Thu. 9/30/10 11:49am Vivian:

It depends on the individual and how open-minded they are. I think society likes the comfort of the familiar, what the herd knows. Look at chain restaurants, stores, tv shows, books, etc.
  Thu. 9/30/10 11:51am still b/p:

The Biiiiiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeebbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbberrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr stretch.
  Thu. 9/30/10 11:52am Cecile:

We are all part of a herd. It's just a herd of loners.
  Thu. 9/30/10 11:53am Andrew:

I don't really think we're getting a higher percentage of quality now. Just more of the good AND the bad. That's why we need media like WFMU to filter out the garbage.
  Thu. 9/30/10 11:53am QSP:

This works very well with the bells.
  Thu. 9/30/10 11:53am Andrew:

...or slow it down until it's unrecognizable!
  Thu. 9/30/10 11:54am Vivian:

I wouldn't say we're loners. Just looking for our tribe!
  Thu. 9/30/10 11:56am don:

this feels subliminal
  Thu. 9/30/10 11:57am Cecile:

I love this Bieb chopped and screwed deal.

Andrew, really? I think TV is better, food is better, and I like the medical technology. I mean, having a knee surgery and walking 2 days later?

And I like WFMU, but my main filter is my own taste.
  Thu. 9/30/10 11:57am still b/p:

(With gruff Scots burr) We seek the grail of gratification, and each soul sees foes, forests and fruits wi' its own eye.
  Thu. 9/30/10 11:58am Cecile:

That's right, sbp.

I don't mean to sound like one of those "everything is ducky" Reason folks, but life could be a hell of a lot worse. And I can think of way worse times to be alive in.
  Thu. 9/30/10 12:00pm Andrew:

Medicine I'll give ya. But that's scientific progress -- quite a different thing from creative innovation.
  Thu. 9/30/10 12:01pm Cecile:

They are closely linked. Are you kidding?
  Thu. 9/30/10 1:34pm lewis:

Very cool all the comments wrt new v old, better v. worse. Thanks for hosting such a salon-like show. Sorry I missed it in "real" time.

all the best!!
