Favoriting Brian Turner: Playlist from July 13, 2010 Favoriting

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

powiva:

man I remember when I had to go to the mist cave, it really penetrated my 11 yr-old mind. never wanted to go there again.
  3:30pm
BSI:

whee for the Pacific 231!
I'm an old fart!
  3:35pm
Matt from Springfield:

@BSI: I'm an (increasingly-)old fart, because of the "New York 85" part--that's where and when I entered this world.
  3:37pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

no, Matt, you' re just a kid.
  3:40pm
Mike East:

Yeah. I think born in '85 is still considered a New Fart.
  3:41pm
Matt from Springfield:

@DCE: Any where I am nowadays, I'm mostly a kid, or else a sage--nothing in between. At least this means I can have Trix while listening to WFMU...
@Mike: Nice term, New Fart! Or perhaps even, "Modern Fart".
  3:48pm
Matt from Springfield:

Best Show listeners: If I'm a kid, what does that make Milo? A zygote? Tom should tell him he's a zygote, and say that it's a compliment.
  3:48pm
still b/p:

re: dating a person --
One of the least expected, non-musical, angles of reference heard recently: familiarity with Sharon Stone's uncrossed legs shot in Basic Instinct described as some "old people" thing.
  3:52pm
Mike East:

you know his response would be....wut?!
  3:55pm
Milo soundbite:

(sigh) I dunno. <What>?
  3:55pm
BSI:

I'd call '85 a relatively contemporary fart, but I guess it's all relative. (dc 68)
  3:57pm
dc pat:

love that Razen tune, man!

fatty jubbo:

ha! "saw a woman eating a sandwich while trying to kick a duck".

Ψ-Ns:

Did you say Crystal River? I grew up in Citrus County, and my sister still works for the Mouse. See anything strange outside of WDW?
  4:04pm
north guinea hills:

RIP Sugar Minott: http://www.avclub.com/articles/rip-reggae-and-dancehall-pioneer-sugar-minott,43053/
  4:08pm
BT:

Yeah Crystal was ruling! Did a ton of diving, water was like glass! We went to Epcot too and ate at the "Chefs De France".
  4:08pm
Matt from Springfield:

Black Hollies, South St Seaport and Battery Park concerts, City Winery, Zebulon in Williamsburg, etc, etc...Brian's making me jealous of you in the NY area!
  4:09pm
Matt from Springfield:

But I noticed the Arbitrary Guide to Popular Culture has events as far ahead as 10/9, so if you can't just run to NY, this is a good resource for occasions you just might want to come in to town for.
  4:10pm
north guinea hills:

Crystal River is in one of the poorest areas of FL (after Gilchrist & Hamilton counties), but if you go to the cooling towers of the nuclear power plant, you can watch the manatees congregate there to warm themselves in the winter. dated a girl from there a decade ago.

Former g-villian, represent!
  4:12pm
Nate in Detroit:

Any listeners from Nashville (or Knoxville)? I'm visiting the area next week and looking for some distractions from a family reunion. Any suggestions for food, drink, music (venues, local artists, record shops), or anything else would be awesome.
  4:14pm
BT:

Yeah, i was there last Jan and saw the 'tees snorkeling-- they were awesome! This time did scuba and grazed some caves but didnt go in, didnt see any manatees, but the water was still ruling.
  4:18pm
BT:

Im surprised C River is poor....it seems like the dive shops are teeming and there's a lotta tourism from it?
  4:19pm
Matt from Springfield:

The Mantles are rocking out!
  4:21pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

that peaceful manatee will eat you if you give it half a chance
  4:22pm
Matt from Springfield:

As are Gulliver's People...these harmonies remind me of Vashti Bunyan's "Coldest Night of the Year".
  4:23pm
fatty jubbo:

UNITY! bliuuuuuuuurrrrrrggggg! I like this jibber jabber style of hardcore singing
  4:25pm
fatty jubbo:

oh man..followed by Cryptic Slaughter!
  4:26pm
BT:

Fatty watch the YT link.
  4:28pm
north guinea hills:

Citrus County doesn't make much in tax revenue. All they have is the power plant, a few dive shops, and maybe a few horse farms. When you hit the county line, the road quality quickly diminishes. I haven't been there since 2000.
  4:31pm
Matt from Springfield:

Many of Brian's tracks have earned this honor, but I'll say it again:
"Those aren't buffering problems, that's our programming!"
  4:58pm
bryan:

nice transition from the chatham to unrest.
  4:59pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

this is current? sounds late 80s...
  5:01pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Bryan: I'm looking forward to more Unrest next week.

Thanks for breaking the silence--this playlist went into a coma for 27 minutes. I was beginning to think the Internet listeners actually thought Robin Fox WAS buffering problems and they all left!
  5:03pm
Barry Roark:

Just tuned in about seven minutes ago and that Rhys Catham tune was brilliant. And I haven't heard Suki in quite some time. Tuning in out of Denver, CO. Love WFMU, used to tune in addictively while living in Williamsburg, Brooklyn in the 90s.
  5:03pm

north guinea hills:

i miss hearing jason forrest regularly around the nyc area...
  5:12pm
sf spike:

that Jemaa album is sooo great - just got a copy
  5:18pm
Ψ-Ns:

Citrus county is deceptive. The diving is fantastic (got my cert with the manatees) and there are many high-end subdivisions, and many retirees from the northeast. Tax revenue is primarily from tourism - and there isn't much of that. It is close to most of the things to do in central FL, but far enough away to avoid problems. That's what most people like about it. Of course, folks head to G'ville/Orlando/Tampa to do anything interesting.
  5:20pm
BT:

Ψ-Ns, do you have any recommends for other clear springs for diving down there? I heard good things about Blue Springs and Alexandra, Feel free to email me offlist if ya like....
  5:24pm
chuck in ct:

good tunes today
  5:26pm
Paulo:

You people, with such a good music, are saving the universe - at least mine here in Portugal.
  5:26pm
Barry in Colorado:

This is some funky-ass shit!! This is what I'm talking about...
  5:30pm
sex crazy cop:

yesssss
  5:30pm
Ψ-Ns:

Rainbow Springs is great for snorkling - but scuba is not allowed
  5:33pm
north guinea hills:

I'm sorry, I was confusing the stats of Citrus County w/ Levy county (on the north side of Crystal River), where my friends in Ingles lived.

The whole area is awesome for diving, tubing, canoeing. Miss the all-night booze cruises. two canoes, one keg tied between both canoes, and set off around 10pm, and pull out of the river at dawn.
  5:37pm
Ψ-Ns:

You can do an easy 2 in a day if you combine Manatee Springs and Fanning Springs.

north guinea hills: The mistake is understandable. where I grew up in Old Homosassa, a boy's first pair of white fishin' boots was a right of passage…
  5:38pm
BT:

Cool, mucho thanks, will investigate for next time...mayeb Ginnie Springs too? But not cave cert.
  5:40pm
Ψ-Ns:

Ginnie is nice, and has 3+ springs to explore. Cave cert is not required, but common sense is…
  5:42pm
north guinea hills:

I have many hedonistic memories camping out at Ginnie Springs.
  5:42pm
Carmichael:

BT, thanks for saving me from the corporate life. Now, back to reviewing terms and conditions ....
  5:43pm
BT:

yr welcome, glad to help!
  5:45pm
Ψ-Ns:

FL springs and hedonistic memories go hand in hand
  5:45pm
