Fool's Gold Live at the Bell House

A live set from LA's African-influenced Fool's Gold recorded by WFMU Sound Goddess Irene Trudel live at the Bell House in Gowanus, Brooklyn on February 19, 2010. The band's lead singer Luke Top was raised in Israel; that curious language you'll hear against buoyant South African and Ethiopian and Saharan style grooves is Hebrew. Plus keep an ear out at the end of the set for a guest appearance by members of Tinariwen, for whom Fool's Gold opened at Bell House.

Fool's Gold will be back on tour in North America this month, returning to New York on Sunday afternoon July 25 at Central Park Summerstage on a stellar Africa-themed bill with Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni Ba and Burkina Electric, before heading to Europe in August. Tour dates on their myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/FoolsGold.

Special thanks to Irene's assistant on the mix, Alex Yockey, plus Katie Gentile, and to all the folks at the Bell House.

wonderful to be here.. headphones are working great!
  7:12pm Marmalade Kitty:

Hiyee! :) Nice show! nice band!
..It was harsh for Ghana, they really should be in the semi finals now. I feel starved of football already 3 days to wait!
  7:15pm Your DJ:

Thanks Marmalade Kitty. Well, surely it'll be worth the wait. Although for those of us who root for the underdogs, it's all riding on Uruguay now! And that's one serious underdog, but we shall see...
  7:24pm slugluv1313:

hi Rob! WOW! i am actually *home* to hear your show live, woo hoo! LOVING the Fool's Gold, HOT sounds for a HOT day . . . and omg speaking of *fútbol* -- i am still mind-boggled by the sheer SPEED of Spain's goalie (the Bruce Lee of the soccer world?!?!?)
  7:26pm Marmalade Kitty:

I always support the underdog! but Uruguay won it once before, the first ever world cup 1930, so I would have to go for holland this time. Holland have never won before and lost consecutive world cup finals in 1974 to Germany and 1978 to Argentina with their legendary Total Football Johan cruyff amongst other. Go Holland!
  7:28pm Marmalade Kitty:

I LOVE football!!
  7:34pm Your DJ:

Yes, Uruguay was the original South American super power - but it was a long time ago. But sure, I can see rooting for Holland. Strike a blow for progressive politics (usually, except sometimes a little iffy with regard to immigrants), good Indonesian food if you know where to go, and of course kaseko music. And orange, the best uniform color in the World Cup (unless anyone was wearing purple, but I don't think so).
  7:44pm Bruce:

Loved Fool's Gold! Great grilling music. Ever noticed cuts of meat resemble continents, Africa, South America?
  7:48pm Marmalade Kitty:

Meat! now that you mention it, well observed!loved the Fools gold guitar playing.
  7:59pm Marmalade Kitty:

You'd need a pretty big frying pan to cook the continental size steak though.. Maybe, with all the oil in the ocean and global warming.. we could be frying some time soon! :0
  8:07pm annie:

rob, glad i could be here for part of the show.. signing off for the night!! ...
