Favoriting May 18, 2010: EVERYBODY WAS IN THE FRENCH RESISTANCE... NOW! live set! Plus, RIP Ronnie James Dio
Everybody Was In The French Resistance... Now! was formed by Eddie Argos of Art Brut and Dyan Valdes of The Blood Arm to "correct the mistakes of pop songs past." As such, their new album is called Fixing The Charts (Cooking Vinyl), and includes such responses to past chart-toppers as "G.I.R.L.F.R.E.N. (You Know I've Got A)," "Hey! It's Jimmy Mack," and the song that ostensibly tells the story of the band's origin, "Creeque Allies" (pronounced like the WWII alliance, not like the plural of "Alley"). The songs are just clever enough without being cloying, and will be enjoyed by fans of Art Brut, Soft Cell and pop music aficionados at large. Catch Everybody Was In The French Resistance... Now! live as they complete their US tour! Dates are on their myspace page.

Listener comments!

  11:03pm
Joe:

You know, I met Eddie Argos once. He's a really nice guy!
  11:06pm
efd:

you don't say!
  11:07pm
Joe:

Actually I've been saying it far too often. It's getting a bit obnoxious.

Pumped for the set!

PS. Eric Burdon?!
  11:09pm
Laurie:

yesssssss orange juice
  11:11pm
Laurie:

I know why you're playing this Martha Reeves song
  11:14pm
efd:

hey Laurie! How was the Chapel Hill EWITFR...N! show?

Joe - that Eric Burdon song was a response song! Now it makes sense, right?
  11:16pm
Frownland:

I don't. Why?
  11:16pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

I always loved the way they added reverb for the Gordon is a moron line.
  11:17pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

This song is heard far too infrequently!
  11:19pm
Joe:

wow. And I must've listened to that song 30 times. I have it on vinyl for chrissake!

I might have to give up this whole music nerd thing I'm pursuing.
  11:20pm
Joe:

and by "have" it I mean it's my dads but its totally actually mine now
  11:20pm
Umed Jim:

Hey Evan! -I finally get to listen live and Mr. Argos is on. Coincidence? hm...perhaps. I just hope I can stay up for the Dio tribute!
  11:22pm
efd:

hey Jim, great to have you here live!

Michael ftLC, whenever I play that I always feel like I'm being unfaithful to the first 3 Sparks albums... but that song is soooo good!
  11:23pm
Danne D:

Damn this is a fantastic start! Loved the Sparks man - haven't heard that in a long time. Can't say enough about this - and in the nick of time too efd!!!
  11:24pm
efd:

it's Mr. First Place, Danne D!
  11:26pm
Danne D:

wow - fabulous cover then! Sorry I'm listening on my pre so the playlist acts wiggy
  11:27pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

EFD the Sparks catalogue is a wealth of treasures, so you can pick almost any album and find gems.
  11:28pm
efd:

True enough, Michael.

Sorry for the single-channel on this one, folks - looks like TT2 is on the fritz (again).
  11:28pm
Umed Jim:

it's Mr. Headed Straight For Last Place again-Frozen Dope
  11:29pm
Joe:

to further illustrate my density, I probably listened to Creeque Alley a HUNDRED times while going through my hippy phase before I realized my name was in it. I'm considering that line as an epitaph.
  11:30pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

An alternate take of Creeque alley? A different flute solo and possibly a different mix. From the Mamas and Papas Anthology no doubt?
  11:31pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

So that's why it sounded different!
  11:34pm
Danne D:

okay that was sparks - I was gonna say...sorrt it's tough to post from phone. Will be on computer soon.
  11:38pm
Danne D:

duh you are talking league. I am just not with it right now. I'm just scared that evan is gonna send Bernie Carbo's thugs after me! :(
  11:41pm
efd:

Get it together, Danne D!
  11:41pm
dave:

"the nazi occupation was an... awkward situation" is a lyric for the ages.

i'm forming an eddie argos fan club chapter. who's with me?
  11:42pm
efd:

Me!
(though I guess that goes without saying)
  11:43pm
efd:

Seriously, it was tough to resist lapsing into full-on fanboy mode when they were here.
  11:43pm
Joe:

shotgun Vice President!
  11:44pm
Joe:

or not resist, as some might have
  11:50pm
Joe:

whats also great is how he thanks the radio audience after ever song. The British are so polite!
  11:52pm
efd:

i think this song is my favorite.. i love the backing vocal part.
  11:55pm
Joe:

it's mocking, yet earnest.
  11:57pm
Neal Adams:

They're the opposite of every band you've ever listened to.
  11:57pm
dave:

and genius. you forgot "genius".
  11:57pm
efd:

Ha! Good one, Neal! (and nice to see you!)
  12:00am
efd:

ironically, they're at the Bottletree tonight.
  12:02am
Neal Adams:

Thanks Evan,..loved the set! The Art Brut sound is definitely there but with quite a twist!
  12:07am
DJ Terre T:

Phillipe Petit show @ISSUE PROJECT ROOM- is cancelled -visa problems
  12:08am
DJ Terre T:

ISSUE Project Room must unfortunately announce that tomorrow night's show (Wednesday, May 19) with Phillipe Petit and Post Abortion Stress has been cancelled. Phillipe Petit was unable to enter into the country yesterday due to issues with his international travel visa.

We apologize for any inconvenience this might cause. We will notify you if the concert is rescheduled.
  12:12am
Michael from the Left Coast:

Alright y'all, I'm off to see Bigelf in a few minutes
  12:13am
Laurie:

EFD! Sorry, I didn't see your comment. The show was great! Unfortunately, the crowd was rather sparse. It was at Local 506, which is a tiny, tiny club, and there were maybe twenty people there :(

But it wasn't awkward! Eddie jumped offstage and did most of the show from the floor.

He was very nice, and he now follows me on Twitter.

I guess Chapel Hill is very much a college town. Lots of kids went home? I don't know.
  12:14am
DJ Terre T:

Nice EWITFRN set! For Your FYI ART BRUT actually played WFMU---my show jeezuz 5 years ago! Times does fly!
  12:15am
DJ Terre T:

  12:20am
Joe:

thats a really good set, hopefully it'll find its way onto the FMA soon?

I'm talking about both sets, actually.
  12:22am
Umed Jim:

Hey Terre, Debbie's working for the census!
  12:26am
Aharon:

Danne, I think the silent K gives you an unfair advantage.
  12:26am
Joe:

rvivr - the closest you'll get to emo on the EFD show.

seriously though, 13 year old me loves this.
  12:29am
E.L.:

I hope we hear more rvivr. I was trying to think of a good palindrome to post but I ain't got no sorts of word smartsy mirror language in my brain bucket.
  12:29am
john:

Hey Evan!

And the a-bones track gives me the opportunity to say, once again, if only by extension, DFFD!
  12:37am
efd:

Hi John, and a happy DFFD to you! And to you, E.L., I say "Able was I ere I saw E.L.ba"
  12:39am
Joe:

Malmsteeeeeeeeeeeeen
  12:39am
Joe:

though to be fair it's not exactly your grade A Malmsteen
  12:39am
john:

Got to say, this is probably the first time I recall hearing anything Dio-related since I left my first, Sabbath-loving dorm in the spring of 1982 and never looked back, fearing the almost inevitable consequences....
  12:50am
efd:

That "look out" in this song makes me chuckle every time, and not just because of the story I'll (re-)tell at the end of this set.
  12:58am
Joe:

well THAT certainly was a shift in tone.

though if you played the piano line on a guitar....
  1:02am
Ken From Hyde Park:

Gosh, what a way to go...stomach cancer. That has got to be really painful. Not easy to eat thing, either. We played Holy Diver quite a bit during college. I'll miss RJD, for sure.
  1:22am
Danne D:

That was a a wonderful Dio tribute, EFD!
Off the phone now so maybe I'll have it together :)

S'up Aharon :) S'up Terre T :) S'up everyone :)

I assure my team's rise back up the chart is but a minor blip in the scheme of things. Lots of smoke and mirrors going on.

Btw, I have another testament to the medical properties of FMU. I had an MRI today on my shoulder (which actually in a mishap on the 2nd Marathon Saturday) - the doc thinks I've torn my rotator cuff :(

So this was the first time I've had an MRI done and I didn't know what to expect - I found it fine but the audio system was on the fritz (my choice of CD was to be a Cornelius CD I got from no less an authority than Terre T btw) so no music. Funny thing was after a while I was sensing some of the odd rhythms of the MRI machine and it just sounded like something Kenny G would play or something you might here on FMU at 4 AM :)
  1:24am
on the phone in chat?:

In camchat, you'd have to do a rule 8 if caught on the phone while in live chat. You may or may not want to do a rule 8. But RJD would have, I reckon.
  1:28am
Ken From Hyde Park:

I thought of Kenny G the other day while watching public TV (NOVA, maybe?). A guy installed some sensitive microphones to record Kilauea Volcano in Hawaii. The sound is really low frequency, and the guy speeds it way up so it's audible to humans. Kenny G would be all over that, I'm sure.
  1:30am
bill k:

immer etwas means "always something" in german
  1:31am
Emily Latella:

Es ist immer etwas.
  1:32am
Danne D:

Nardwar doesn't get the big comments tally, but his shows are really interesting I have to say.
  1:33am
Narduwar Listener:

I'm normally too stunned to type.
  1:33am
bill k:

Never mind.
  1:34am
Ken From Hyde Park:

Here we go. It was Nature, not NOVA. http://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/episodes/kilauea-mountain-of-fire/interview-milton-garces-on-listening-to-kilaueas-song/4828/
  1:35am
Volcano:

Pardon. Must have been something I ate.
  1:42am
efd:

Thanks for the immer etwas translation, bill. (And I hope you enjoyed the movie last night, if indeed that's the same bill k)

Danne, good luck with your rotator cuff. That'll really get you in the mood for the fantasy baseball league.

Ken, that does sound very Kenny G-ish.
  1:43am
Danne D:

Kenny G is everywhere!
  1:48am
Joe:

everytime I hear the opening to this I can't stop thinking about "I'm Just a Singer in a Rock n Roll Band". That is absolute same drum/bass line. Justin Haward would be soooo pissed.
  1:50am
efd:

huh, one of those lightbulbs just showed up over my head. I thought that only happened in cartoons.
  1:53am
Joe:

*Hayward.

Great show, Davies! Good luck on your interview.
  1:56am
efd:

thanks Joe! I'm looking forward to next week's show, should be fun.
