Listener comments!

  11:07pm
doobie:

First!
  11:08pm
AZ:

"The Noise of Carpet"! I always wished they'd done a few more in that style...
  11:13pm
efd:

Way to go, doobie! Hey AZ! Yeah, that's one of my faves of theirs.
  11:13pm
efd:

stick around for the Bare Wires live set, coming up at around 11:30
  11:13pm
Danne D:

Hi funk fans :)
  11:14pm
DJ Terre T:

Haha this SWEET mix! At first i thought it was a mashup! Leave it to EFD to strum up a "Stars on 45" type remix of The Sweet from 1984!
  11:15pm
AZ:

I had completely forgotten about the existence of this Sweet megamix, which I think I last played some time in summer '84. I wonder where my copy is?
  11:16pm
randy in NC:

Bare Wires, an EFD fave!
  11:18pm
efd:

the Sweet megamix was 130bpm, according to a sticker a previous owner put on the jacket.
  11:18pm
Danne D:

outstanding EFD! What's up Terre? :)
  11:18pm
efd:

Randy, the irony is they didn't even play the songs on that single!
  11:19pm
randy in NC:

funny...
  11:20pm
DJ Terre T:

DAMN i NEEDZ* as a present that SWEET mega mix!!!
Can't wait for Bare Wires set!
'Sup Danne D?!

* Secret HINT to...anybody!
  11:21pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

More than thirty years later and Jon Rubin can hit every note of this stratospherically high vocal.
  11:23pm
AZ:

Terre: if I've still got my copy, it's yours.
  11:24pm
john:

Hey folks! Dang, I love the Rubinoos. Made Becky sit up and say "hey, who's that?" But heck, we know what those garage rockers are like...
  11:29pm
DJ Terre T:

Hi AZ! Well alrite!! Ur 2 goood! That Sweet mix is sumthin i'd never heard !
Oh man EFD's gunna play (AGAIN) the SUPER SOX record i got him...haha! Just btwn u & i & the internets i never thought he'd play it over the air. Thought he'd listen to it "privately" or put it up in a frame or sumthin!
  11:31pm
Michael from the Left Coast:

EFD--that photo is from the Sweet's performance of Wig Wam Bam on Top of the Pops I believe (with Mick Tucker playing Mod Orange drums if I recall correctly)
  11:32pm
Joe:

Why only 20 minutes?

...

Is it a post-punk thing?
  11:33pm
E.L.:

Just in time(ish)!!!
  11:35pm
efd:

that's just how they roll, Joe.

Hey E.L., TT, JEF and everyone else! Michael, thanks for the tip on the Sweet photo - that would make sense.
  11:36pm
AZ:

Mowest was a short-lived early 70's Motown subsidiary. The best-known record on the label is probably disc jockey Tom Clay's godawful must-be-heard-to-be-believed version of "What The World Needs Now," which features cloying samples of little kids saying things like "What's prejudice? What's segregation?" It was a top 10 single in '71.
  11:37pm
Danne D:

AZ Is good peoples :)
  11:38pm
efd:

he's not just good peoples, he's my (adoptive) (marathon) daddy!
  11:41pm
AZ:

Danne: thank you!
  11:43pm
Joe:

You sure did, Bare Wires guy!
  11:46pm
Danne D:

AZ is good peoples :)
  11:58pm
seang:

Gimme that Funk! Gimme Everything!
  12:02am
seang:

is that Nellie McKay?
  12:02am
Joe:

You can say Pissed Jeans! Ken said so. Brian Turner says it all the time.
  12:06am
efd:

I know, I know - I just don't like saying it!
  12:06am
DJ Terre T:

Yes this Sat April 10 at UNION POOL: The ABOVE, The ELECTRIC MESS and the Runaway Suns! This will be a great show!!!!!!!!
And don't forget this Saturday April 10, on my radio show i will have the awesome ***The ABOVE*** performing live on WFMU prolly at 4pm! U needz to listen to this! (If i may plug plug my own show! )
  12:07am
Joe:

The Above are awesome live.

Commenteer Joe seal of approval.
  12:12am
john:

I miss El Tiante. Just saying.
  12:13am
efd:

Me too, he was my 2nd favorite pitcher after Bill Lee.

And RIP to Mike Cuellar, a worthy competitor and part of one of the best rotations ever.
  12:15am
AZ:

Terre: part of Evan's magical genius is his willingness to expose audiences to long-lost broadcasting ephemera. Where else am I gonna hear "Super Sox 75"? I'm glad you bought it for him!
  12:15am
Joe B:

Mike Cuellar RIP. Or as the New York Post called him in their Joan Jett story, Mike Playard.
  12:16am
AZ:

Tiant was mighty fine in game 4 of the '75 series.
  12:17am
randy in NC:

Kind of uncanny how little it seems to me that calling a game has changed in 35 years.
  12:17am
Joe B:

also Evan, did you see the Bernie Carbo story in the Globe last week where he said he was stoned when he hit the 3-run HR in Game 6 of the '75 Series?
  12:20am
efd:

Joe, I did see that - in fact, two different people send me a link to that story, one of whom is on this very comments board!
  12:21am
john:

There's actually a team in my other league called the Carbos. No sign of loading, though, at least from the first few days of the season.
  12:21am
Joe:

I saw that! Wild. Not quite a Dock Ellis moment, but still pretty impressive. I'm terrible at everything when I'm stoned. Except being hilarious.
  12:22am
efd:

heh John, I was just going to mention that my team name in the Happy How Do You Do To You fantasy league is the Bernie Carbo Loaders.
  12:23am
Michael from the Left Coast:

the backing track on this is played on a Wurlitzer funmaker organ (we had one when I was a kid--the sound is unmistakable). I've never heard one on record before.
  12:25am
Joshua K:

The man that my grandmother had married had one of those organs! It sure did make the fun.
  12:29am
Michael from the Left Coast:

speaking of sox--what is it about the Yanks that always seems to give the Sox the Willies? Sox blew another one today
  12:32am
Michael from the Left Coast:

Is the Dan Epstein who wrote that book the Dan Epsteni who's a music journalist? If so, I haven't seen him in several years. A good man
  12:33am
seang:

Bernie Carbo all doped up hitting a home run
  12:34am
AZ:

Michael: I just looked it up...it is indeed.
  12:34am
Michael from the Left Coast:

and EFD don't forget $45,000 was a boatload of money at that time (when a house in Baltimore probably could have been bought for $10,000).
  12:35am
Michael from the Left Coast:

AZ have you seen Dan recently? I guess that's why he disappeared.
  12:35am
seang:

oh man, didn't check the previouse posts-i like that spellling
  12:37am
seang:

Vermin Poets! new Billy band
  12:38am
AZ:

Michael: I don't think I've seen him for at least five years. Happy to learn he's been doing something cool!
  12:38am
Michael from the Left Coast:

Seang--do the Vermin Poets have any records out?
  12:41am
seang:

i think they do in London, my goose is cooked!
  12:42am
lisa jane p:

There are no songs on EFD's show that can be missed. So, if you have to pee or watch LOST or wash dishes, fuggetabowdit.
  12:44am
seang:

So true
  12:45am
efd:

Thanks, LJP! It never occurred to me I'm up against Lost on the west coast!

(and NO LOST TALK! I don't watch it until Friday on the DVR)
  12:46am
Joe:

Lost < Breaking Bad
  12:48am
AZ:

Sixtieth Parallel: how'd I miss these guys the first time around? They sound like The Sound!
  12:50am
Joe B:

Lost? Is that the show where they rescue Tom Hanks off that island?
  12:51am
Michael from the Left Coast:

Is Wicked Cool the Little Steven Label or is Brian Setzer's label? I can't remember
  12:51am
Joe:

yeah, and there's that guy who gives everybody nicknames. Wilson.
  12:54am
Danne D:

sorry about the duplicate above (though it was worth repeating). My so-called "smart" phone stopped updating the comments :)
  12:58am
AZ:

Just thinking about the Pop-o-Pies transports me back in time to a day in 1986 when a guy I knew spent 2 hours trying to convince me that they were the best band in the world. (He was wrong.)
  12:59am
E.L.:

The Laureates? Nice! I'm all in.

The Electric Jellyfish must be a Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou reference, right?
  12:59am
efd:

Michael, Wicked Cool is Little Steven's label.
  1:00am
E.L.:

Whatever they (The EJs) sound great.
  1:07am
E.L.:

Oh wow. I tracked this track down after you played them last week. Pop 1280 is good stuff.
  1:12am
efd:

re the Vermin Poets, there's a 4-song 7" out on Smartguy. We have it here, but I don't think I'll play it this week since I just played that other Billy Childish song.
  1:16am
osvi:

EFD, what a great show! Archive City here I come. Peace..
  1:22am
efd:

thanks Osvi, glad you're enjoying it!

Glad you likes the EJ, E.L. (as well as Pop. 1280)
  1:33am
ang:

Great show! quite magnetic! I know I could listen to archive - because I must work early. But I can not let go...so I am here for the next 1/2 hr... Wow, you just can do not wrong tonight! Often the case, but tonight is special.
  1:35am
AZ:

Spectacular show, Evan! We are quietly slinking off into the night to catch Lost...
  1:40am
randy in NC:

Wish I as in the area...
  1:43am
efd:

ooh, Marty McSorley is mad - he had Method Actors vinyl ready to go at the top of his show and I gazumped him.
  1:43am
Joe:

And opening for Ted Leo on friday, as they have the whole rest of this tour, are New Brunswick's own Screaming Females! Fronted by my future wife, Marissa Paternoster.
  1:44am
E.L.:

I always knew I was going to buy this album, but this is the track that will force me to buy it tomorrow.

P.S. They rocked E.W.T.R.T.W on the Onion.
  1:44am
efd:

thanks for the compliments AZ and ang, greatly appreciated!
  1:45am
E.L.:

Tell Marty I'll hear it again with equal enthusiasm.
  1:46am
Michael from the Left Coast:

Do they credit the Ramones for We're a Happy Family?
  1:47am
randy in NC:

Wish I went to see TL last night...
  1:53am
Danne D:

Thanks for a great show EFD!
G'night everyone!
  1:55am
ang:

such finesse- Your choices and the way you arrange them is entertainment in the very best meaning of the word. Makes me happy.
  1:58am
E.L.:

Thanks EFD! I holding out for Marty to play the Method Actors again.
