Listener comments!

  12:08pm annie:

morning liz!!
  12:11pm Chris:

Good Morning Liz. Great start. Perfect tunes for contemplating a switch to a macrobiotic diet.
  12:12pm ~L:

Hi Liz!
  12:15pm Liz B.:

Hi everyone and happy MLK Jr Day!
  12:18pm Kat:

Mucca Pazza!!!
  12:21pm Ann Landers:

Chris -- Binge big in a bad food bon voyage blowout! Like a no-rules stag party before wedding day!
  12:27pm annie:

chris, any drastic change in diet should happen slowly.... wait... drastic changes in diet should be replaced by slow transition.. there i said it.
  12:32pm Chris:

my doc gave me some info on it this morning (she loves the macrobiotic) but it looks like such a sad diet; so boring and flavorless - like regular radio.
  12:33pm Liz B.:

Macrobiotic is pretty hardcore, Chris, yikes! Are you ready to deny yourself of cheese?
  12:35pm Ike:

Cheese is life! Well, I did OK without it when I was traveling around SE Asia, but that was because I had awesome dirt-cheap authentic Asian food everywhere.
  12:35pm annie:

i'm in agreement with liz... i'd say instead of going macro, how about going local, which is something akin to macro, only you can eat cheese!!
  12:39pm Wendy del Formaggio:

No cheese? Why not just kill yourself now.
  12:40pm Ike:

Heh! Should've seen that comment coming! Hee hee.
  12:41pm Kat:

I don't care what they say, I won't stay in a world without cheese
  12:41pm Chris:

My doc says to go to whole foods, as if I were some upper class professional who can afford that stuff. And no, I'm not ready to give up cheese. Just had some pepper jack in my eggs this morning. MMMMMM!!!
  12:42pm Glenn L:

What Wendy said. Was waiting for that one myself, Ike.
  12:44pm Wendy del Formaggio:

Ike, I know. It looks like I logged on just in time. I saw the Bat Symbol (aka the Cheese Symbol) in the sky and realized someone was almost tricked into giving up cheese. RESIST, CHRIS! Oh, what a friend we have in cheeses!
  12:45pm kabud:

this a sick track))
  12:46pm Wendy del Formaggio:

Hi Glenn! (I couldn't NOT say "Hi"!)
  12:46pm Kat:

indeed. Obviously I need to spend more quality time on the Free Music Archive.
  12:50pm kabud:

go for it Liz!))
  12:50pm dab:

Wow!Chemirocha ROX (rocks)
  12:55pm Wendy del Formaggio:

Working today! But I'm self-employed, so does that count?
  12:55pm Sandy in Houston:

I am at work. Thanks for playing music.
  12:55pm ?:

i work from home: no difference
  12:55pm 1mckrs:

  12:56pm ?:

i work from home: no difference
  12:56pm karao:

sigh - working!
  12:56pm upstate Gianni:

Yo Liz,
i'm at home,
  12:57pm Joe Steele:

(at work) oh no wonder there's only 2 podcasts. They're perfect for downloading to BlackBerry and listening while away from other media.
  12:57pm kabud:

NJ i am always at work and i love it because i am in love with my work
  12:58pm upstate Gianni:

what do you do Kabud
  12:58pm Kat:

Working. Getting laid off soon, but working today at least. Ooh, podcast. Put me down for some of that.
  12:59pm Liz B.:

Wow, lotta folks are at work today!
  1:00pm Mitten John:

At play.
  1:00pm Chris:

No work - this le sang song sounds a lot like walk don't run...hmmm.
  1:02pm Jay from Scotland:

...I've been sliding in a country groove...
  1:02pm Parq:

Neither working nor playing, just loafing. NYC civil servant here, enjoying afternoon breakfast for the third day in a row -- and the last for some time, as I have Plans all next weekend.
  1:03pm Parq:

Special hya to Wendy, whose appearance follows a comment on cheese as day follows the night-- and we are all the better for it.
  1:03pm Arnaud:

The melody of the former song reminds me "Walk, don't run"
  1:04pm kabud:

google me))
  1:07pm Glenn L:

What Parq said. Wendy enters as if almost on que.
Hey Wendy! Didn't see your greeting from before.
Was running around at work.
  1:09pm Chris:

you sell ka bud from home?
  1:12pm still b/p:

Working while the snow piles high, and thinking now, thanks, about a lunch other than the one I brought...about a certain simple perfect grilled "something" sandwich.
  1:14pm kabud:

Chris : r u a cop?
  1:15pm annie:

hhmmm, grilled "something": i treated myself to a grilled swiss on crocodile bread ... yumm.. olive oil, greasy and melty cheese..
  1:15pm kabud:

as far as ka bud i wish i have some. NJ has new laws almost in effect would be nice if they allow coffe shop so we can go and have some coffe after the show
  1:16pm annie:

parq: wonderful to see you here, albeit peeking out from behind your work there.. :0
  1:16pm Wendy del Formaggio:

Aw shucks, thanks Parq!
Glenn, I hope they aren't making you run around too much.
  1:17pm Wendy del Formaggio:

Annie: crocodile bread. What's that? Does it bite you or do you bite it? :-D
  1:17pm Chris:

Start a medicinal ka bud shop.
  1:19pm Joe:

Thanks for playing the betties!!!
  1:21pm Chris:

You can call it The Pharmacy of Love.
  1:21pm annie:

wendy, it is a very doughy roundish loaf of bread. so-named due to its appearance, crusty surface... yummy..

i'm wondering if anyone knows of a substitute for curry leaves?
  1:21pm kabud:

my choice of bread for today is: Chabaso bakery cranberry pecan and very strong black tea NOT FROM A BAG EVER
  1:22pm Mary Wing:

Teardrop Explodes! WHEEE! How'd you know I wanted to hear that?
  1:22pm kabud:

Chris: law will allow only 6 shops for a state
u think in this corrupted state we have a chance?
not in a million years
  1:28pm Chris:

kabud - 6 shops? doesn't california have like 300 or so in san fran alone?
  1:29pm The Smoker:

And some people call me Maurice
'Cuz I score
At the Pharmacy of Love.
  1:29pm Marshall Stacks:

Annie, I'm not aware of any substitute for curry (kari) leaves. Might be better to leave them out instead of trying using something to replace them.

I keep a couple of large bags of them in my freezer. You can find dried ones in Indian groceries out of season, but they don't come close to the fresh ones in flavor. Still, better than nothing.

My previous attempts to grow kari plants from seedlings (from a Queens nursery, if I remember correctly) were not successful. Those with a green thumb might fare better.
  1:29pm kabud:

educate yourself in legal matters man
6 only and all will be owed by corrupt operatives from the left wing of the democrat party, mark my words
  1:35pm Art Smass:

I only smoke macrobiotic bud sold by corrupt operatives from the left wing of the democrat party.

It your guarantee of quality!
  1:38pm Chris:

those corrupt operatives will smoke it all themselves - damn left wing of the democratic party
  1:38pm kabud:

i prefer the stuff that has nothing to do with politics because and i am not joking it is known that they lace stuff : i mean it
  1:41pm kabud:

Art Smass : dont be surprised if something goes wrong with your health; i wish they allow home growing but they want to have control over what people smoke and keep a record it is simple as that
  1:43pm Chris:

play something by the chipmonkees
  1:45pm Art Smass:

I'm glad someone's keeping records - after all this macrobiotic bud, my memory's shot.

  1:46pm Ike:

I only smoke libertarian green tea leaves coated in organic cat drool and local non-free-range grade-X honey. That's the only way to prevent the northern wing of Major League Baseball from SPYING ON ME!

Great show Liz!
  1:47pm annie:

thanks marshall.. and to be honest, it's the first time i've ever smelled asafatoeda!! i've always been a little afraid of it.. now it might actually be the next cumin powder in my life.. i'm improvising the steam pot by using pie tins in a tall stew pot.
  1:49pm Azam:

Unless they're in the recipe already, I always throw in a couple of bay leaves if I have no curry leaves.
  1:54pm Marshall Stacks:

Remember, you can't spell asafetida without "fetid."

A friend brought me a big tarry ball of local asafoetida from her family village in India. (It's free of both organic cat drool and local non-free-range grade-X honey, I'm happy to say.) I'm still chipping away at it. A little goes a long way - most recipes require no more than 1/8 tsp.

As Azam says, you can use bay leaves in place of curry leaves. They won't substitute exactly, but they do add a good flavor of their own.
  1:56pm Chris:

i have no idea what all these exotic drugs are that marshall and annie keep refrencing - hard core man.
  1:58pm Wendy del Formaggio:

YES YES YES!!! I love Gary Numan!!! Thanks, Liz. More people should play his music. He's a genius.
  1:59pm annie:

the recipe called for a pinch... i shall soon know how fat my fingers are... this came from a jar, though, no ball of wonder..
  1:59pm kabud:

just grow it yourself if allowed by law thats all
  2:00pm annie:

i really agree with the idea of a call-in, comments-allowed cooking show on fmu!!!
  2:02pm kabud:

oh my God we just need another recipe exchange show ))
  2:03pm Chris:

Liz is cooking!!! Does that count?
  2:06pm Andy:

The time has come for Revenge of the Nerds
  2:06pm kabud:

looking good Liz: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3065/3110531317_401b0a982e.jpg
  2:09pm Ike:

From what little I've heard, I'm with Wendy re: Gary Numan.
  2:09pm Art Smass:

I'm having Great White Whale flashbacks.
  2:13pm Ishmael:

You think you have it bad?
  2:17pm Ahab:

Ish, ixnay on the ale-whay, OK?
  2:26pm queequeg:

what's all this talk about seamen?
  2:27pm george eliot:

i know nothing
  2:27pm Salty Pete:

Up Y'oars!
  2:32pm Ike:

Digging this Jablonski, even if not too sure about their apostrophe usage. "Randy" as an adjective? Then no apostrophe, dang it.
  2:33pm Ike:

(Or "s." But it's prob. >1 Randy: no apostrophe either!)
  2:34pm annie:

ike, next time get decaf ;)
  2:34pm annie:

ike, next time get decaf ;)
  2:35pm annie:

sorry... sorry..
  2:36pm doron:

did you know: disco stomp is the inspiration for "How Soon is Now"? Marr was trying to ape it when he came up with the lick.
  2:36pm Marshall Stacks:

I think Randy's is a place:

So it's a possessive.
  2:36pm Ike:

Good call Annie! Too heavy a dose of jasmine green tea leaves in the strainy thing... heh.
  2:38pm Looms:

Liz, i don't know if this is the aim today, but your selection makes me chill out ofter work, thanks!
  2:39pm Ike:

Wow, good call from Marshall too!
  2:42pm Glenn L:

Randy's is a famous Jamaican recording studio back from the Roots era. Vincent "Randy" Chin owned & ran the place at 17 North Parade. He now runs VP distribution w/his wife in Queens.
  2:44pm Glenn L:

Whoops, Randy died in 2003. think his son now runs the biz.
  2:47pm mb:

Liz! Help me out please. Who is the DJ who used to play with Sun Ra, plays mostly funk/jazz, has a real smooth delivery? He does fill ins, usually. Thanks.
  2:48pm Liz B.:

mb, you're thinking of the Good Doctor.
  2:50pm mb:

  2:59pm annie:

the good doc was on a few weeks ago...he healed me!
