A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Loretta Lynn carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

i need to put a moratorium on supporting my local record stores so i can pay my taxes (i've been splurging a lot on vinyl lately anyways).

as for my record shopping, i never go in w/ pre-conceived notions of what i want, and i refuse to listen to any thing before i buy..... it works 90% of the time...
  Thu. 4/16/09 9:36am trouble:

thanks listener mark for pointing out my typo: i meant pastoral abandonment...
  Thu. 4/16/09 9:36am jaypee:

I've nothing against the squirrel, but two pairs of pileated woodpeckers feed there. The birds are protected by law. So you see it's a matter of legalities.

jaypee. excellent! good eye! keep peeking!
  Thu. 4/16/09 10:24am jaypee:

And here's a tip to keep squirrels out of your bird feeders: cayenne pepper powder. The hot stuff. Mix it in with the seed so that it's all covered with the powder. The birds don't notice the heat, but squirrels can't handle it. Caution: be careful when mixing! Inhaling pepper powder is like getting pepper sprayed.

Annie-we've been seeing LOADS of turkeys up and down the street out here (N.E. CT). My wife and I counted 40 in one flock, all spread out across the road. They could care less if there's a car beeping its horn at them. Just take their time crossing. It's a hoot.

Well, I'm off to West Haven. I wish I could take you all with me. Laters.

oohh, i saw that loong ago, perhaps a revisit is in order..
Thu. 4/16/09 11:11am north guinea hills:

i almost forgot how much i enjoy this show. i just procured the whole blood & fire recs back catalogue and have been listening to an album or three first thing in the morning at work the last 3 months. now i've finished blood & fire, i can enjoy no longer having trouble-free mornings (and other morning wfmu dj's).
  Thu. 4/16/09 11:13am Cecile:

I find with Nick Roeg movies that I am usually befuddled while watching them, but they resonate and haunt long after they've finished. Except for "Man" which was just silly, IMO.
  Thu. 4/16/09 11:15am trouble:

this film made "performance" look like a disney flick...very dark
  Thu. 4/16/09 11:17am trouble:

ngh: you can now work your way through the bullwackies catalog. there was an interesting article in monday or tuesday's times about the label
  Thu. 4/16/09 11:19am 55ffrr:

What was the Roeg film with Theresa Russell & Art Garfunkle? That one was odd as well.
  Thu. 4/16/09 11:19am Cecile:

walkabout is the one that really knocks me for a loop.
  Thu. 4/16/09 11:20am Cecile:

Track 29, never saw it, but I remember crap like that.
  Thu. 4/16/09 11:20am annie:

i could see that movie over and over cecile. jennie aggutter was great in that. have you read the book?
Thu. 4/16/09 11:20am north guinea hills:

trouble, i do have a bit from wackies (the i dub ny kids throw me stuff every now and them), but i dearly need to take a break from all things dub for a few months. i will look up that article tonight, thought thanks! it would be nice to support what is now a local label, anyhoo.
  Thu. 4/16/09 11:22am Cecile:

No, was there a book? Gotta look that up!
  Thu. 4/16/09 11:23am annie:

there are explanations in the book for the boy's odd behavior.
  Thu. 4/16/09 11:24am still b/p:

I remember that a second or third viewing of the Man Who Fell to Earth lowers the frustration/bafflement factor of first viewing, because what's unclear matters less, and the elements that are entertaining can just be taken as they come.
  Thu. 4/16/09 11:25am dc pat:

if you don't like this oh sees song, then as far a I'm concerned, you've got spit for blood...
  Thu. 4/16/09 11:25am Cecile:

oh, ok.
I could kind of guess why.
I like that movie because it could SO not get made today. And it's like nothing else.

I miss the bittersweet/dark parts of 70s cinema quite a bit.
  Thu. 4/16/09 11:25am annie:

i'm gonna watch that tonight..
  Thu. 4/16/09 11:26am Cecile:

still b/p, I should probably give it another chance

dcp, i have coffee for blood, but love that song.
  Thu. 4/16/09 11:26am annie:

it all focusses on the concept of the walkabout for the young man but spills over into the girl's behavior as well. yeah i'm watching "man" tonight
  Thu. 4/16/09 11:27am listener mark:

trader joe's has a great fair trade organic bolivian blend that's great
  Thu. 4/16/09 11:29am dc pat:

speaking of walkabout, did you ever watch Walkabout?
  Thu. 4/16/09 11:29am N by N again:

Ya down with OBB?
  Thu. 4/16/09 11:30am Cecile:

I got a big can of that from my sister for Christmas.
Now I'm working on a lovely house blend from Twin Lakes Coffee in Twin Lakes, MI. The guy is a fanatic. and the place is located in the middle of nowhere.

Is there another Walkabout than the Walkabout we were talking about?
  Thu. 4/16/09 11:31am Matt:

Wow, I love the Mr. Scruff tune. It sounds very Kruder-and-Dorfmeister-ish
  Thu. 4/16/09 11:31am annie:

coffee roasters are a breed among themselves.
  Thu. 4/16/09 11:33am dc pat:

sorry, popping in and out. Didn't realize it was already mentioned...
  Thu. 4/16/09 11:33am GP:

  Thu. 4/16/09 11:37am annie:

  Thu. 4/16/09 11:38am Cecile:

i sure will.
  Thu. 4/16/09 11:42am zoot:

The one with Art Garfunkel and Theresa Russell was Bad Timing. Track 29 featured Theresa Russell and Gary Oldman. You also might want to check out Insignificance, a very interesting Roeg talkie.
  Thu. 4/16/09 11:42am annie:

i keep thinkin i'm gonna turn around and watch a bear traipse through the land here.
  Thu. 4/16/09 11:42am listener mark:

By the end of "this is the modern world" listener comments side bar just jumps back and forth
  Thu. 4/16/09 11:45am Cecile:

Oh, zoot, you are right. I just mixed that up.

  Thu. 4/16/09 11:46am Roosevelt Franklin:

A bear eats bear food
  Thu. 4/16/09 11:47am Johnny Crow:

......And the bear had nothing to wear.
  Thu. 4/16/09 11:48am trrrriihs:

  Thu. 4/16/09 11:49am dc pat:

  Thu. 4/16/09 11:49am listener mark:

several cups of coffee adds to the effect of the jumping back and forth, this is interesting music
  Thu. 4/16/09 11:53am Cecile:

Rama sounds like it's from this crazy alternate universe 70s
  Thu. 4/16/09 11:54am annie:
