I never miscue a record. I am punctual, well-prepared, and dislike clutter. Outgoing and helpful, I'm always appropriately dressed. I do not behave erratically and have excellent penmanship. My CD's never skip, and I am in good health. I like all the notes, in any order.

Robert Ashley  Automatic Writing   Favoriting Automatic Writing
Alvin Lucier  excerpt from "Dr.Chicago"   Favoriting   1st in a trio of hilarious George Manupelli films, starring composer Alvin Lucier & Robert Ashley's then wife, Mary Ashley. Pauline Oliveros shows up, too. Lucier's extemporaneous rambling would crack the crew up so bad that for some scenes, they literally had to leave the room as soon as the camera started rolling to avoid wasting film. Manupelli's finally put together a 3-dvd set himself. $50 directly from him: http://georgemanupelli.com

north guinea hills:

oh site, i almost forgot about the ashley marathon. thanks for reminding me.

one side of the private parts set i got sounds like kompakt minimal techno, and it was recorded in 1979...
  12:18pm
Chuck7:

Dang it Bryce you are my fave dj of all time, and some of my best friends are djs. And the pic on your dj site is WEIRD and, and,...
  12:28pm
bryce:

huh, some of my most reviled archenemies are DJs.... holy crap, chuck7 i owe you $40,000. do you accept copper bullion?

ngh, dying to hear the whole 7 lp bizniz! spent the last 10 minutes licking the internet for a trace....
  12:33pm
north guinea hills:

i found the private parts lps at eat recs in greenpoint. unfortunately, they didn't have the whole collection.

i already had the cd version, but it's just 1 lp worth of the whole collection.

i'll be playing parts of said private parts on free103point9.org on jan 27 (7pm-9pm) on radio ruido's show.

thanks again for playing automatic writing, it's been a near decade since i last listened to it.
  12:42pm
matt:

Do you have a particular favorite Ashley piece?
  12:43pm
Cecile:

I should have stoled that out of the rekkid library at the station I used to work at, but i'm glad I didn't or I would have been one of THOSE DJs.
  12:50pm
annie:

the worst i ever did as thief/dj was to take the cds that never got played. then i played them on my show but kept them with me. there was the free bucket... not alot to write home to mom about there..
  12:53pm
Bad Ronald:

I lifted "London Town" from a record store.

Ah, now I feel better...
  12:55pm
north guinea hills:

i, on the other hand, have probably had more then 125 records stolen from me while dj'ing.

i guess i was never too careful.
  12:59pm
dc pat:

I'm listening to this while Réveil des Oiseaux by Messiaen plays in the background. It sounds great.
  1:06pm
annie:

i feel your pain NGH
  1:08pm
Cecile:

and let's not talk about friends and family who LOSE records you loan them.
  1:08pm
bryce:

daaaah i'm blinded by golden light!

matt, he's done so much intense stuff, esp. if you can set aside the time to sink into a long piece. "automatic writing" can't be beat for otherworldliness....

  1:27pm
Sean Daily:

Not even close to first comment! Woo hoo!
  1:28pm
Hugo:

Cecile, yes we can!
  1:28pm
Melissa:

This has been a FANTASTIC show so far. thanks so much. Great curating !!!
  1:32pm
zedprophfer:

it's sad that piano teachers never teach you how to play like this on a piano. :(
  1:33pm
Cecile:

I mean, Zed. I'd still be at it if they did.
  1:34pm
Hugo:

For this, you don't need a teacher ...
  1:34pm
bryce:

i'll teach you! but you must pay me in försterkäse.
  1:36pm
bryce:

let me tell you, melissa, it's hard work punching 2 buttons an hour, holy shit.

hugo, don't think we have that one! i'll check, tho.....
  1:36pm
annie:

would it be overzealous to say"I LOVE THIS SHIT!" ??
  1:37pm

  1:40pm

  1:42pm
Parq:

Bryce, if anyone's up to the gruelling technical demands of airing a show like this, you are.
  1:46pm
bryce:

i'm actually standing across the street, pushing the buttons with a 230-foot rod made of taped-together string cheese snacks.
  1:46pm
Hugo:

Pushing two buttons per hour is much harder work than pushing one button per hour ...
  1:47pm
bryce:

that's right, especially in a flaming walrus suit.
  1:48pm
Hugo:

Indeed ...
  1:56pm
Gregg Jarvis:

Bryce- do you have Hans Bennink's drum solo on drum kit constructed of cheese wheels and close miked???
  1:57pm
still b/p:

Carpenters on radio at low volume here singing Top of the World while Monahan makes happen at slightly louder volume. Something so right.
  1:58pm
dc pat:

right on, still b/p.
  2:02pm
annie:

it's very surreal this whole live-talk comments list. the dj can see the comments, respond to them; yet has to remember that the whole city is listening as well. we, on the other hand are out here listening and commenting and taking phone calls and typing in other various chat-boxes... sometimes i get them mixed up and think i am talking with someone in the comments here..very surreal. so many levels ... i love it.
  2:05pm

I know requests are annoying, but any harpsichord?
  2:14pm
eric:

  2:15pm
Bad Ronald:

Yes, I've got my Donald Duck costume on and am sitting in a vat of jello... Ooops wrong chat-box!
  2:19pm

  2:42pm
Matt:

Thank you!
  2:44pm
?:

Is the title of that Aldo Clementi album really "harpsichordling, Elisabeth Chojnacka"? I only ask because I have been trying to find anything about it online, and I'm getting nothing at all. Thank you.
  2:49pm
bryce:

oh shit, sorry! the album is actually by Elisabeth Chojnacka, called "Clavecin d'Aujourd'hui." came out on Erato in '77

if you can track it down, there's also a really intense Luc Ferrari piece on there for harpsi and tape, "Musique Socialiste ?".
  2:50pm
?:

haha, excellent. thanks so much for the new info. great sounding show today, really!
  2:58pm
