i dont like dublin alot. its the poorest looking richest city in the world with no public transport system and laughably bars clost at 12.30 or 2.30 at latest, a nanny state indeed. i can say these things as i am an irish in exile, also although i do have great friends living there. i just wished thewy lived somewhere nicer. good show

listener jeremy:

hotrod! hola! hey gotta question. how do you find your music? been listening to the past few weeks of your shows offline via mp3 and i REALLY like your seletions. is it all from the music store you used to work at? recommendations from friends? scratching the corners of the internet? inquiring minds want to know... dig your stuff
  8:03am
r080:

very good stuff, greetings from Czech Republic

OK, I can't let that comment on Dublin slide without some defense - even if it was flaming.

Dublin is one of the nicest placest to live in the World. In fact Ireland was ranked by the Economist in 2005 as number 1 in terms of quality of life.

Dublin has a perfectly adequate public transport system. Anywhere in Dublin you wanna go, a bus will be along in ten minutes or so to take you there.

Our bars close at 2:30am (no biggie), and we have a vibrant and living Pub-culture (one of the best in the world without question). Any night of the week (not just fridays and saturdays), you'll find someone to talk to, and be merry.

Obviously no city is perfect, but frankly Reginald, your gripe sounds typical of an ex-pat. Someone who is justifying their move away to themselves as away of convincing themselevs they don't miss home as much as they do. My advise to you is to come home. Its fine. Whats the worst that could happen?

Hey Listener Jeremy! I'm delighted that you've been enjoying my shows so much. I really put a lot of thought into my playlists. Since I've joined WFMU, 99% of the music is from my personal collection...not the WFMU library. How do I find my music? Some things I discovered while working at a record store for about 5 years, some are recommendations from trusted sources (close friends, magazines, blogs...etc). You need to simply connect the dots. For example, if you find an artist you REALLY like, find out what label they're on. Most likely you'll find very similar artists that are also part of that same label roster. Also, look for artists affiliations. Find out what records your favorite artists have been guests on. Dig dig dig!!!
  8:35am
HotRod:

One more thing, Listener Jeremy. Hopefully now you consider me one of your trusted music sources! All quality, no fillers! ;)
  8:37am
HotRod:

What's up, Czech Republic??? Nice to have you tuning in, rO8O!
  8:38am
listener jeremy:

funny you mention that - i JUST recently started doing that. found labels like definitive jux (aesop rock) and ninja tunes (too many) host artists that i really like. always figured labels were just for the money and would sign anyone of any genre, but that understanding was out of ignorance. and found that good websites of labels store collective tour dates, saving me a LOT of time in finding new artists in the genre who play locally (DC)

since day one when i stumbled onto your show, i noticed you had some quality stuff. loved the beats and the gradual initiation into your full catalog. when think of friday, i think of your show (honestly!!)

p f k:

really diggin the show, whats up with the playlist?
  8:39am
HotRod:

What do you mean, p fk?
  8:39am
dedalus05:

One thing I always do is to check whether any of the tracks I like are cover versions, and then check out the original recordings. I came across some of my favorite artists after listening to cover versions of their songs - Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Gillan Welch, The Knife to name the first three that come to mind.

Really amazing set Hotrod. Thanks again.

katy cofrencaine:

Hi Dedalus
to be honest no. I really do honestly beleive dublin is the poorest city to live in, interms of quality of life in comparison to the other western european capitals. its far too expensive, and full of yuppies and buds(aka skumbags). its just hard to avoid that in dublin. i lived in dublin for 9 years, mostly to get my educational qualifications. i wish we had a good big city. As i said i have great friends living in dublin, just could never live their again. currently residing in berlin. say no to damp cocaine. irish people of late cant seemto resist please god.
  7:45pm
Denielle:

So good! Really loved the last set of songs! Thanks again for another ear-candy Friday!
