Transpacific Sound Paradise Back-to-School Special TSP en Espanol live from Barbes, the popular Brooklyn nightspot at 376 9th Street and 6th Ave in Park Slope.

With guest host / technical guru Irene Trudel.

Featuring three bands live – all performing songs in Spanish but from very different musical traditions.

Based in Mexico, Chejere mixes traditional Veracruz Son Jarocho and Mexican son with Latin rhythms and other contemporary elements. Son Jarocho is a traditional style from Veracruz with Spanish and African roots – familiar to all from La Bamba, the jarocho song Ritchie Valens turned into a rock and roll classic. Chejere, making its New York debut, performed in conjunction with the annual Celebrate Mexico Now festival.

One of the most charismatic Latin American singers around, Lucia Pulido is known in NY for her brilliant interpretations of Colombian traditional vocal styles. But for this performance we hear her exploring heart-wrenching Latin American songs of unrequited love made popular from the thirties to the sixties: boleros, tangos and waltzes. Lucia breathes new life to this repertoire of grief, pain, deception and heartbreak with a richly nuanced dramaticism.

Jose Conde y Ola Fresca are a wildly eclectic Cuban-rooted band, incorporating genres like son, changui, songo-funk, mambo, and timba as well as rock and soul in their sound. And their sound and Conde’s resplendent vocals are getting international attention: Last year they were signed by the prestigious UK label Mr Bongo which has released the band’s new cd Revolucion.

Thanks to Olivier Conan at Barbes and our crew: Chris Stubbs, Katie Gentile, Liz French and Bil Bowen.
