rip Brian Wilson. I appreciate Beach Boys music, but it never touched me the way other musicians' works have. Perhaps it just feels too bubblegum to me. May be regional...the music feels so California and I grew up in New England..

I'm gutted by the news of Brian Wilson's passing. I've loved the Beach Boys for as long as I can remember: some of my earliest memories are of listening to the Beach Boys with my older brothers, and I've been a diehard, (some would say obsessive) fan ever since. My sister-in-law gifted me all of her well-loved Beach Boys albums when I was about 13, and I played them endlessly. As I got older, my love for their music only grew and I subscribed to every newsletter and fanzine I could get my mitts on and read every scrap of info and history I could, and spent countless hours hunting for and listening to bootlegs of outtakes and alternate versions of their songs and learning all I could about Brian and his brothers. His music means the world to me, and I'm utterly heartbroken. Sigh. If anyone on this board is interested in any of those bootlegs, I'm always happy to share. A lot of them have been commercially released, but I've got lots that haven't yet seen light of day.

I was going to go out for a ride in the antique sports car, put the top down and cruise in this gorgeous NYC weather, but alas my place is home with fellow mourners. Beach Boys was the first concert I ever went to back in the early 90s during their nostalgia comeback. I don’t remember if Brian Wilson was sitting out that round. All I can really remember is that it followed an afternoon game of the minor league baseball team in OKC, and seeing the advertisements for it on TV. I was only 8 or 9 years old at the time and it was the soundtrack to my parents’ youth, but I was more listening to hip hop tapes and heavy metal at that time. Glad I learned to appreciate later. It was "Surf's Up": As Bernstein declared at the time: “There is a new song, too complex to get all of first time around. It could come only out of the ferment that characterizes today’s pop music scene. Brian Wilson, leader of the famous Beach Boys, and one of today’s most important musicians, sings his own ‘Surf’s Up’. Poetic, beautiful even in its obscurity, ‘Surf’s Up’ is one aspect of new things happening in pop music today. As such, it is a symbol of the change many of these young musicians see in our future.”

The Beach Boys were part of the “5%” of pop music that Bernstein said he not only enjoyed but saw as revolutionary in the world of music, and art at large for that matter. This new strand typified the times. When listing the masterpieces of the era, he declared: “All the truly great works of our century have been borne of despair, or of protest, or of a refuge from both, but anguish informs them all.”

Here's your other bit of trivia: Mouthful of Sores is based on Bob Odenkirk getting so stressed out during his stand-up days that he had an auto-immune reaction and suffered chronic canker sores.

I don't know if the commentaries are still available anywhere but just like interviews today Bob comes across as an incredibly nice guy hampered by insane perfectionism/high standards for himself and David Cross sounds like a total a-hole.

Joe R.:

Has the cliche "I hope he is at peace now" ever rung more true? Saw him a few times including in 1999 when he was just returning to performing. The shows were always sort of fraught—did he *really* want to be there?—but the music always transcended that. Thanks and farewell Brian.

hi Amanda!

i have been listening while at a cat sitting job -- i think these two handsome Tuxedo guys are loving your selections too :)

and thank you for hosting another cat adoption party! i will be cat sitting in Hoboken and Jersey City that day -- but i sm hoping that i can stop by

and thank you for this amazing Brian Wilson tribute!! the word "iconic" gets thrown around a lot nowadays -- but he truly was (and remains!) an icon

my first (and only!) boyfriend in high school LOVED The Beach Boys! to look at him -- "typical" 1970s "burnout" -- you would never know, but they were his favorite band -- i got him Endless Summer for his birthday (i think) one year

i gotta run to a doctor's appointment! so i will have to catch the rest of your show on the archives -- but always such a treat to hear you on WFMU again :)
