I once read a review of an Arab grocery store in Boston that said it was full of "crab." I visited the store. There was no crab there. The Arabic speaking author of the review meant "crap." No "p," just "b."

Sha'bi music, as a genre, takes off with Adawiya, among others, in the 1970s, courtesy of cassette tapes. State-controlled Egyptian radio refused to play it.
  7:40pm
Andrew:

Sha'bi also translates to "popular" and the Arabic root for "sha'b" means "the people." One of the main slogans of the 2011 Egyptian Reovlution was "al-sha'b yurid iseqat al-nizam," or "the people want the fall of the regime." So, as a genre, sha'bi music enjoys a very close relationship with "the people."

Hey Andrew - do you know if there are genres called sha'bi/chaâbi in other Middle Eastern Arab locations? In the Maghreb there is Algerian chaâbi, which is a specific urban genre from the city of Algiers, and Moroccan chaâbi which is a wide label applied to popular music based on a variety of folk sources.

Is it good?
  7:56pm
Andrew:

Great question, Tim! Sha'bi, I don't believe, is limited to Egypt. And, in other places, might also go by other names that similarly embody the spirit of sha'bi music in Egypt. One example you no doubt know is Rai in Algeria. The use of colloquial Arabic, the focus on everyday life, the controversy inspired in the process, strongly resonates with what Adawiya was doing in Egypt and responses to it.

Listeners might enjoy this book on Rai:

Great observations re: rai-sha'bi similarities!

I'm thinking about the term "sha'bi" itself and figuring it usually emerges in distinction to something considered to be not sha'bi. The same could be said for the term "popular" in English.

Is Egyptian sha'bi music understood to be "of the people" in distinction to other musical styles considered to be more elite? In Morocco, I believe "chaâbi" as applied to music emerged in the 1940s with the rise of recordings, referring to urbanized versions blending regional folk and urban styles. I would guess this was in distinction to both elite Moroccan traditions (andalusian, melhoun), and the modern styles coming out of the Middle East (like Oum Kulthum, Abdelwahab, etc.), none of which were sung in colloquial Moroccan Arabic.

Yes, sha'bi signals a sharp departure from "tarab." Sha'bi is grounded in daily life, tarab literally means "enchantment." Sha'bi reflects people's realities, tarab romanticizes them. For more on both, yall might enjoy this piece I wrote on Adawiya, who features prominently in my book on egypt's cassette culture, following his passing last december: https://newlinesmag.com/essays/the-making-and-mourning-of-ahmad-adawiya-a-musical-legend/
