I liked it but I didn't know anything about it other than that it was a vampire movie going into it
Avatar 1:14pm
Noir Lover:

I liked not loved Sinners. There were some allegories in there about black salvation and how it's been stereotyped as "the devil's music" but in the movie it's literally under attack from blood sucking vampires. I didn't love the ending of the movie though. Kinda cheesy.

Didn’t see sinners but am likewise totally confused by how a lot of movies nowadays are super popular while I think they suck. Silver lining is once in a blue moon I find something that does not suck, so I enjoy it all the more
  1:17pm
wimpy:

I also thought the soundtrack was super tacky which was surprising because of how much praise it’s been getting. Maybe that’s just because I’m familiar with delta blues
Avatar 1:17pm
PoL in Berlin:

I thought Sinners was decent, but by no means great. Way too much gratuitus gore. Funny, I was also weirded out that there were at least 5 references to oral sex. That is quite a few for one movie. It was creepy...but not in the scary sense. And why Vampires and not the devil if one is talking about the blues?! And too long. That is the typical self indulgence of Writer/Directors.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:17pm
Handy Haversack:

↳ Karl @1:15
I found it practically unwatchable, just veering between incoherence and total schmaltzy sentimentality. I felt just like Jessica just described -- totally trapped in an aesthetic hell prison.
Avatar 1:17pm
The Chief:

Not ‘explaining’ anything but I can say what I liked about Sinners… it felt like an auteur embracing grindhouse/b-movie elements. The film wasn’t afraid of serious topics or to ‘swing for the fences’ at times, but it was okay with being messy/campy/schlocky.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 1:17pm

@thecheif I noticed the grind house elements as well, but they were very subdued, I guess since it’s a Hollywood blockbuster. It just kept making me think of unfavorable comparisons to From Dusk Till Dawn

Al Pal:

Dude, yes, thank you for having the COURAGE to speak out about Sinners. That movie was so incredibly bad. I too felt like ripping my skin off and running out of the theater screaming. I was so utterly confused as to what it was about, what kind of movie it was meant to be (musical, horror, action, thriller, blaxploitation, campy, Disney, Marvel, sexy, etc. etc. etc.). I found the sexual moments to be completely out of the blue, un-erotic, laughable, and uncomfortable. It was hilariously crass and out of the blue (people saying things like "I'm gonna EAT that pussy, bitch!" or "I'm gonna fuckin' tear this vampire a new butthole!" or whatever) while sort of maintaining this light-hearted Disney aesthetic (which only added to my confusion). I don't think Michale B. Jordan is a good actor. I thought it looked ugly in terms of lighting. And it was just overall dumb.

And then I similarly couldn't understand the immense, unwavering praise it's been receiving. Like, look, I'm a self-admittedly curmudgeon bastard, I don't like most of what comes out in theaters, but I can still be accepting of some elevated, light-hearted, vampire schlock. This was just garbage. And I feel like I generally have a good barometer for what critics will say, and I was again and again baffled by their praise. I read the Manohla Dargis NY Times review and felt like there was a camera over my shoulder just witnessing my reactions as I read, point by point, a take down of everything I thought about the movie.

I am so confused. So anyway, thanks for speaking out lol.

Avatar 1:21pm
The Chief:

↳ wimpy @1:20
Yeah, there was more than a little Dusk til Dawn/Tarantino in there but I think it carved its own path. Also a lot of Carpenter. Idk, I’d much rather have a movie like Sinners be part of the national discourse than something that I’ve seen a million times before (ie, a reboot, sequel, by-the-numbers picture).

Also, is this the first diegetic horror musical since… The Wicker Man? Props for that.

I tend to not watch the thing they say "you need to see" until maybe years later. Only thing I missed was Breaking Bad, which I refused to watch at the time cuz everyone said I needed to watch it. That actually lived up to its hype. If I ever get around to watching the Barbie movie, Severance or Sinners maybe I'll feel the same? Anyways, diggin the tunes. Thanks J!

Al Pal:

Just to add something positive to my comment, I will say I really enjoyed the moment in the film when the young blues virtuoso was performing his song and we got to wind around the room viewing the various influence that Black music has had on the landscape and the world at large over the ages. I wanted to see more of that magical realism, thought it was totally fun and cool, and thought it was a missed opportunity not to lean more into that side of things. Instead it just devolved into boring monster gore and nonsensical relationships devoid of emotional connection.

Yes, what Handy says is true! And since we are living in a time of alternate truths I shall explain my equally truthful truth! I finally picked up the reissue of this last year. I first became aware of it about 10 years ago maybe. It came out the same time and I think on the same label as the Cybotron re-issue. Not the Detroit Cybotron but an Australian synth prog band called Cybotron. My friend was huge into these which is how I learned about them.

Ehhh… Tarantino movies are often “mixtapes”. I think Sinners spent the bulk of its time discussing black identity and art vs post racial assimilation. From Dusk til Dawn has the same premise as “Vamps” and a lot of other movies that came before it because QT assembles films like vision boards so calling Sinners a Dusk til Dawn ripoff feels a bit reductive. Everyone’s entitled to their opinion, obvs.

But I find the staff there very annoying. They're so arch.

Awesome reissue of a great under appreciated French group/album originally from 1986? Perhaps adjacent to offshoots of the latter Etron Fou scene & the wonderful works of Roberto Musci & Gionvanni Venosta.
