Franco Twinkie:

Hi Bob. Did I hear you right, you were talking about John Simon? Well, he hated Big Brother and constantly held up The Band as 'real musicians' to them while working on Cheap Thrills.

It's true, Big Brother were primitives compared to the other groups in the San Francisco scene, but at this remove they had something the other bands lacked which was a whacked out punky energy that still sounds good to me.

Franco T., I know I'm repeating myself, but John Simon's memoir, "Truth, Lies, and Hearsay," is a good read. He did a concert and book-plugging tour in 2018 when it came out, and put on a great show (at age eighty-something, I think).

I don't doubt it. For a trained musician been paid to work with stoned hippies had to be a trial. But just the other day on WFMU I heard something by Big Brother recorded live at The Fillmore I had never heard before. I was stunned at the ragged energy.

Hey, Bob and distinguished music aficionates. Hey Bob, something you've played a few times from the magic jukebox: the tape where (I think it's) Tom brings a beer to a church rehearsal and the pastor starts yelling at him. I hope that's on your agenda today, but if not, what is the loose title of thatso I can maybe look it up in the archives; it's hilarious. Thanks much.
