Hey Gary - I'm guessing the crossfades I'm hearing are done by you or the software you're using but would not be present if I dropped the needle on the LP - is that correct?

Gary:

Hi Mom! Have a great walk tonight!

Gotcha - that's cool. There are some compilations that feature crossfades as part of the experience of the album. The original Donna Summer greatest hits album is like that.

Whoa, I didn't know that

mic_a:

A wee report -- Last week's chatter about the 1970s 1950s rock 'n' roll nostalgia got me real curious about how far back that wave got started. I'm sure things were bubbling underneath even earlier, but digging for verifiable dates, it looks like 1969 seems to be Year Zero, with the "Rock 'n' Roll Revival" all-star shows hitting the concert circuit and Sha-Na-Na's formation and invasion of Woodstock. The "Cruisin'" series of comps came out in 1970. If we want to use K-Tel as a bellwether of lucrative exploitation, they started cranking out the 50s comps in 1972. Don McLean's "American Pie" released in 1971...

Hi mic-a: I missed last week's show but saw your comments about the Cruisin' series - much appreciated! We had several of those when I was growing up, and it gave a great sense of the times, as well as some great tunes.
Avatar 7:42pm
tim abdellah:

↳ mackeral @7:33
Agreed - this is a fantastic compilation. I pre-ordered it on vinyl from Canary's Bandcamp site. Took him a while to fund and press it. I think it was during that period in the pandemic where everything was slow cause of supply chain disruption.
  7:42pm

I played the hell out of my little Cruisin' 1961 cassette. It was an unusual series, with its recreations of the old boss jocks' radio shows.

Oh, cool. Long story short, I've been assisting her husband with some historical legal documentary research. He is a now retired American Renaissance scholar with an abiding interest in Melville. I've been digging solidly into Melville lately--absolutely essential reading--and now it looks like I will meet a for-real expert when he and his wife visit Berkeley.

Folks, one of Gary's contributions to the trajectory of postmodern and pre-postmodern poetry is memorialized in an important anthology of such texts edited by Paul Hoover.

Oh, flarf, yes! Of course we met in person! I drive by the coffee shop all the time!

Dean:

Ironically, I never caught up with tim abdellah in person, and he lives here in Berkeley or environs!

By "one of Gary's contributions," I mean his development of the phenomenon of flarf poetry.
