Favoriting May 15, 2024: Hi-Waisted Modernists #276 - Lions & Tigers & Bears

On today's Hi-Waisted Modernists with DJ GeorgyGirl, The Blue-Haired Hippie, I'm trying a little something different. It is the birthday of L. Frank Baum, so I'll be reading from "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" ... AND it's Brian Eno's birthday so the music comes from a selection of his ambient pieces ranging from "Music For Films" through to "Apollo: Atmospheres & Soundtracks". We're off to see a very chilled wizard.

WM:

One interpretation is that WO is an allegory about the gold standard. Maintaining the gold standard was a controversial issue in late 19th Century American politics. “Thou shalt not crucify mankind on a cross of gold” was the cry of Democratic Presidential candidate William Jennings Bryant. One scheme was to expand the money supply by monetizing silver. Thus, the yellow brick road is the gold standard; Dorothy’s silver slipper (they were changed to ruby in the film) is monetizing silver; the Cowardly Lion is William Jennings Bryant; the Emerald City is (of course) money; the Wicked Witch of the East is New York bankers, etc. Several writers have elaborated this theory. See “Political interpretations of the Wonderful Wizard of Oz” on Wikipedia. Also:

GG! haven't been able to comment but am on lunch break now. OH how I used to fill my earholes with hours of Eno back in the daze. Great to hear these bits again, no one ever plays this side of Eno on the radio much.
  3:33pm
WM:

Another interpretation of WoO is John Boorman’s nutty movie Zardoz (1974). It’s a very odd science fiction / fantasy dystopia in which it turns out that the new god is based on Wizard of Oz (zard - oz).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm

Mr Fab:

↳ DJ GeorgyGirl @3:33
radio DJs play his "Baby's On Fire"/David Byrne/etc rockin stuff, which is of course, utter genius as well, but you don't hear his ambient music very often - maybe considered too low-key for radio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm

The City of Emeralds - NOT "Elizabeth Duke" for my UK listeners ;-)
  3:43pm
WM:

“One awful yet fab movie” - great description of Zardoz. Boorman’s earlier movie Deliverance was a big success, so he got a free hand to write and direct his next film as he pleased. Sean Connery turned down lots of money to continue as James Bond to star in Z. It’s a nutty vanity project but it does have great cinematography by Geoffery Unsworth (who shot Kubrick’s 2001) and Charlotte Rampling is very beautiful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

↳ WM @3:43
He turned down Bond money for this?? I bet he regretted that ;-)

↳ Song: "Above Chiangmai" by "Brian Eno"
Ah. Thailand. I was wondering about that :-)
  3:51pm
WM:

Yes! The story is that he afraid of being type cast. Things worked out well for him in the end. Pauline Kael wrote a interesting and funny review of Zardoz in her book Reeling. “Sean Connery in a loincloth as the only virile man in an elitist commune of the future, dominated by hyper-intellectual immoral women.”
Avatar 3:52pm
Mr Fab:

the Winkies = Wizard of Oz characters
the Winkies = Eno's live backing band

Coincidence?!?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

↳ WM @3:51
I mean, Sean Connery in a loin cloth is about as Bond as it gets strangely enough ;-)

Dennis Hopper also had free reign after the smash success of "easy Rider," so he made the "The Last Movie," perhaps as self-indulgent and wonderfully bonkers as "Zardoz."
