Maintaining the gold standard was a controversial issue in late 19th Century American politics. “Thou shalt not crucify mankind on a cross of gold” was the cry of Democratic Presidential candidate William Jennings Bryant. One scheme was to expand the money supply by monetizing silver. 	3:43pm WM: “One awful yet fab movie” - great description of Zardoz. Boorman’s earlier movie Deliverance was a big success, so he got a free hand to write and direct his next film as he pleased. Sean Connery turned down lots of money to continue as James Bond to star in Z. It’s a nutty vanity project but it does have great cinematography by Geoffery Unsworth (who shot Kubrick’s 2001) and Charlotte Rampling is very beautiful.

	3:43pm WM: “One awful yet fab movie” - great description of Zardoz. Boorman’s earlier movie Deliverance was a big success, so he got a free hand to write and direct his next film as he pleased. Sean Connery turned down lots of money to continue as James Bond to star in Z. It’s a nutty vanity project but it does have great cinematography by Geoffery Unsworth (who shot Kubrick’s 2001) and Charlotte Rampling is very beautiful.
