Hello, Don-O. I'm so glad you played this. It's my favorite song from Freak Out. I guess I'm just sentimental.

One normally doesn't associate Zappa with sentimentality. It's going to be that type of show. Hey, Dave from CA!
Avatar 6:07pm

↳ David Shortell @6:03
He's not mean, he\s thinking of Power....and THEN he got mean/ Yo-ish Dave!

This wasn't on the album.
Avatar 6:27pm

↳ Song: "Deseri [11-68]" by "Reuben & The Jets"
Not to be confused by Deserie by The Beach Boys.

I used to get an annual dose of Zappa on a public station in Connecticut on Memorial Day. I would be in town, having attended the Victoriaville festival the prior week, then I'd drive with a buddy to his Fairfield home. Memorial Day morning the station devoted a number of hours to a Zappa tribute.

@David Shortell: It wasn't?
Avatar 6:33pm
David Shortell:

↳ Dean @6:28
I erred. I used to have that album. Strange that I'd forget that fine song.

You had me worried that I was mistaken, because the song is so familiar to me, but I'm not hip to a lot of Mothers stuff. How else would I have known the song?

Hey Don-O , diggin The Frank Friday as I'm up to my *bleep* in work. Like Aitch, i never thought of Zappa as a singles artist. But he did do a slew of surf/r n b/etc singles under various names in the pre-Mothers era, some of which is pretty durn cool.

(Early Zappa - that could be a show in itself?)
Avatar 7:28pm

↳ Mr Fab @7:25
Early Zappa? That would be a good show. I got the Bot Wonder sessions around here.

Hi Don-O and folks. How could I be such a fool that I took a nap instead of listening to Hours of Crap. Well, there's still some Zappa crap to go.
Avatar 8:14pm

↳ WR @8:12
WR, don't worry WR. I'm going fer a walk and THEN a nap after this crap is over.
Avatar 8:16pm

↳ Song: "Valley Girl [6-82]" by "Frank & Moon Unit Zappa"
THAT single!!

"Valley Girl" was '82?! I was thinking "Goblin Girl" was a shameless effort to ride its coattails.

The 45 releases is an interesting context for hearing Zappa.

I should have played this backwards.....

I've never understood why radio stations don't play everything backwards. Most of us already have the equipment to play it forwards.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:44pm

Tuoba gniklat uoy era tahw

Hour of Parc!

If you do present an Hour of Crap entirely backwards, people will complain, "Well, that's an hour I've gained I wouldn't have been able to otherwise!"
Listener Robert:

↳ Dean @8:44
Several of the WFMU DJs I listened to in the 1980s had frequent resort to playing records backwards.
Avatar 🎸 8:50pm

Good listening big crapper, woulda chatted with ya's but twerk
Listener Robert:

I'm trying to remember who'd play entire LP sides backwards in the 1990s.

Persuasions just kill it. Wish they'd covered "Valley Girl."
Avatar 8:52pm

Figured SOMEbody in the 'FMU universe did something like that.
Listener Robert:

Might've been Rich Hazleton.
Avatar 8:52pm
Mike Rogers:

↳ Listener Robert @8:51
That might make Barry Manilow listenable!

Barry Manilow backwards? That describes the entire ouevre of Iannis Xenakis.

"Brown Shoes": the first Mothers tune I ever heard way back in the '60s, and it haunts me to this day.
Avatar 8:55pm
Mike Rogers:

↳ Dean @8:54
“Haunts me to this day!” Excellent! I gotta check it out!
Avatar 8:55pm

Alright, it looks like we're REALLY wrapping this crap up. My thanks to all for showing up and putting up with this. I'm off to walkies and sleepies, maybe checking the last of Rich's show on that other stream.

David in California:

Thank you, Don-O, for today's show. I heard tracks that were new to me, and gained an increased appreciation of Zappa as a social satirist.

I even remember where I was when I heard it: Rick Williams' house in Whittier. Fourth grade?

What struck me at the time, and still does, were the title (the fuck?) and the motif from the opening vamp. All the other drama was secondary.
