full disclosure. A motivator for my first dj tour in Mexico (in the before time) was to go crate digging for cumbia and find some cumbia rebajada mixes from the source (Mty, where cumbia rebajada started). This is all dj /rupture's fault, naturally...(I ended up sending him some of the mixes I found).

Side note: With regard to MMA/UFC: even as someone who studied karate and kung fu when I was much younger, MMA did not seem too different from a modern Roman pankration/gladiator spectacle. So, the question of why MMA and UFC became so popular in the last 20-30 years is the focus of the youtube documentary series Fighting In The Age Of Loneliness. It's a good amateur history and analysis of the whole phenomenon. Highly recommend.
