WFMU family, let’s make it rain today. Let Michael know how much you appreciate him, and all the amazing work he does for us every week. The fact that Baby Joe is along today is a perfect topping. Two greats together. Batman and Robin, Chocolate and Peanut Butter, Shields and Yarnell. It’s all perfect. Let’s do this!

I loved Grace of My Heart but it isn't very successful at what it aims to do -- it is really all over the place as a pastiche / roman-a-clef or whatever of the Carole King / Brill Building /60s pop-into-70s singer-songwriter epic story ... but kudos to Allison Anders for trying. Music and the stories around it are so central to her films.

I never finished "Roadies"----I think I watched 6-7 episodes & found it boring, not many interesting characters, etc. Given the subject (rock, touring, band/personal drama) I don't know why these series are so bad. Even worse was "Vinyl" (which I did sit thru all of), which apparently was more about violence, drugs & naked girls than anything music-related. Kept waiting for it to get better, but Scorsese & co. seemed more enamored by the bad behavior than the development of punk, disco, etc.

I first heard Jonathan Sings which had stylistic problems and I didn't like the production much but there was something great about him. Egyptian Reggae IS great and was a British hit ,I believe. I DID see him with a band in the 80s which had ZERO production or stylistic issues. I wrote the Egyptian hit comment b4 Michael mentioned it I SWEAR. The Modern Lovers album is KING of course. This week, besides a couple Oscar winners, I saw the doc "We Like It Like That" (mostly too surface but worth it just to see Joe Bataan explain how he taught himself piano), and "Funny Pages" which has lots of WFMU content.
