Re: describing his sound, I’ve always remembered a review (Francis Davis maybe?) of Conrad Silvert presents live at the opera: saying the album was uneven but a good place to hear what was then a rare commodity, Wayne’s “inky and enveloping tenor.”
But I’ve never heard a good description of his soprano sound

Re: soprano, I do remember a young Branford Marsalis (who absolutely developed a distinct approach to soprano before he achieved one on tenor) saying that he emulated Steve Lacy’s tone but Wayne’s concept. And that is of course how you integrate your influences. But OTOH I remember thinking “can you do that? Isn’t Wayne’s sound indivisible from his concept?”

Shorter's later quartet is the logical continuation of Miles's quintet. Miles's own electrification project meant he didn't continue on that path, and Shorter himself went in other directions after leaving it. But both groups were really some of the best and most adventurous groups in jazz. In my humble opinion!

I got to see the quartet, think it was 2015, at NJ Performing Arts Center, at a woefully underattended performance. I took MsJazz; that was a tactical error. I thought I was hearing a rebirth of the 60's Blue Note Shorter sound-it clearly wasn't that (it wasn't dissonant, which is what led me to believe MsJazz would enjoy it). What it was waw very abstract-melodies are there, but buried in a constant motion, shifting textures, they require a lot of close listening. Even when Shorter played a melody from 60s record, you had to know it, and then dig it out to recognize what he was playing. In short, I dug it, MsJazz, not so much...

As we go backwards in time, the music does see (to me) to get less dense, a bit more accompaniment/melody and less texture, abstraction of melody. Though you can hear him going in the directions of the 2000+ quartets here at the start of the 2000's

True dat, though the density of improv seemed different with the Miles group. I'd sorta describe it (hard to find words) as the Miles groups sort of exploding-everything shooting out, getting diffuse in a way. The 2k Shorter groups seem to implode- getting denser rather than more airy. (of course this is very imprecise...)

Y'know, Shorter's soprano tone is quite different here than on the 2000+ recordings. It has more bite later, thinner, edgier,
I suspect some of it is age/breath (don't throw things at me...)
Not much vibrato either time period (like Steve Lacy, I suppose)...

Okay, I guess my book report is due. I finished Olga Tokarczuk's "The Books Of Jacob" a couple of weeks ago (took a couple of months). Very good, very worth the journey. Though -- and I think this is a good thing -- she does leave it up to you to work out what you've gotten from it afterwards. I suppose I would just note quickly that although there's a lot of journeying within it, it is no simple-minded 'hero's journey' (and Jacob is certainly no hero, more like crazy cult leader), but a collective narrative with constant movement between many characters, least of all Jacob -- who is mostly a cipher seen through other's eyes. Otherwise... it certainly rubbishes notions of nationalist purity, with borders and leaders constantly shifting; and people and languages in constant flux (and so Tokarczuk gets death threats from the Polish right). There's a lot more to consider (history as non-linear process, the power of extended families, etc), but I'll leave that to you someday, maybe.

I have no need for a "smart" device. To the contrary, I would find carrying one around a burden far exceeding any benefits it might occasion. And I, too, am sick of all the hype about AI, as I was in the '80s about all of the silly chatter about Minsky et al., but then I was sick in the '80s and '90s of all the hype about the Internet, the WWW, and so forth. It's the hype, not the technology, that irritates me. For a counter-example, see this NYT story about the use of AI for improved diagnosis of breast cancer: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/05/technology/artificial-intelligence-breast-cancer-detection.html

Of course capitalism is driving these sorts of innovations, and that's an issue to be dealt with. But on balance it seems to me that technology like this is a good thing. ChatGPT, etc., are another story, as they have no immediately obvious narrow application by which we can measure their utility.

Apropos of… something to do with technology, my wife replaced her 20 year old clock radio, which was making weird popping sounds (speaker cutting in and out unbidden). I thought I'd open it up and DeOxIt before setting it out on the stoop. Five screws, and it came apart to reveal a board scattered with microswitches, all linked by clever plastic fingers to the familar dial-and-button interface on the outside.
