Favoriting February 12, 2023: The Gone-Between
Grant McLennan - he of the melodic guitar, the sweet, smoky croon and truly wondrous songwriting - one half of The Go-Betweens on and off for 30 years, left us longing for more at just 48. A sampling as overly-brief as his life was.

' Grant William McLennan (12 February 1958 – 6 May 2006) was an Australian alternative rock singer-songwriter-guitarist. He co-founded the Go-Betweens with Robert Forster in Brisbane in 1977. In addition to his work with the Go-Betweens (1977–89, 2000–06), he issued four solo albums: Watershed (1991), Fireboy (1992), Horsebreaker Star (1994) and In Your Bright Ray (1997). He also undertook side-projects and collaborations with other artists. McLennan received a number of accolades recognising his achievements and contributions as songwriter and lyricist. In May 2001, the Australasian Performing Right Association listed "Cattle and Cane" (1983), written by McLennan, as one of their top 30 Australian songs of all time. McLennan died of a heart attack in 2006 at the age of 48. '

"created solely from the sounds of a single reeded instrument, pushed into strange shapes by tape manipulation, filters, oscillators and noise generators"

That "solely" is doing some heavy lifting there. Imagine "created solely from the sounds of a conductor's baton waving around, pushed into strange shapes by orchestra members responding to scores and the baton's motion."

Stork and Rev, this seems as good a time as any to mention today's special cocktail…

Corpse Redeader

Did you die of a heart attack in 2006? Or was it 2016? Has an accident involving Long COVID, a shot of Glen Passaic, and a rubber band left you looking both very silly and very dead, yet here you still are, holding down the corner of the bar instead of pushing up the daisies? Has the weight of the world so warped space-time that you can reach out and touch tomorrow, or is that just the stale bagel you ate for breakfast? Whatever your temporal distortion, this spin on the Prohibition-era Corpse Reviver #2 will not make it better, so why not turn into the skid til you meet yourself coming and going and wink out in a puff of sub-atomic self-annihilation, taking a chunk of the known universe (or at least a barstool) with you?

1oz Glen Passaic
1 more oz Glen Passaic, to make certain
1 dash absinthe (Absinthe du Malice preferred)
1/2oz Cointreau
1/2oz Untreau
1oz lemon juice
1 large tuft Dachshund's undercoat

Dash the absinthe into a chilled coupe, then dash the coupe. Shake wet ingredients over ice til dry, and strain directly into mouth through hair of the dog. Serves one right.

Sem, the cocktail has some bite, but so do the clips on the jumper cables, so why not?

coel, I guess it depends how the pitbull-husky mix feels about it. Truth be told, when I tried this recipe at home, I used a mix of west Asian village dog and domestic shorthaired cat hair, because it was in my mouth already.

A pedant might insist that you really meant a palate (as in mouth) cleanser, and not a palette (as in paint) cleanser; but that pedant can get stuffed, because Glen Passaic works in either capacity.

I've found Glen Passaic to be an effective palette cleanser. Just have to be careful to not apply too much or the palette may be totally dissolved.

Interesting. The reviews I'm finding of the band's work during the late '80s and '90s are mostly favorable, but often with serious qualifications. At least two find them wanting when compared with The Smiths and REM.

Looks like they made an in-store appearance at Tower Records on Sunset Blvd. in '88.

"i need 2 heads" clearly based on "it's not you" by the cure.
