"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

"We used to meet every day at Famous Music in New York," says Hal David, recalling the early days of their partnership. "I'd come in with some titles and some ideas for songs, lines. Burt would come in with opening strains of phrases or what might be part of a chorus section. It was like Show And Tell: I'd show him what I had thought of and he'd show me what he had thought of. And whatever seemed to spark the other would be the start of whatever song we started to write that day. I'd write four lines or sing lines of a lyric and he'd have a melody and, very often, we'd sit in the room and write the song together, sort of pound it out. I'd be writing Iyrics and he'd be writing music and, all of a sudden, we'd have the structure of a song, which we'd keep working on. We didn't write songs so quickIy that they were done overnight or that day. I'd take home his melody and he'd take home my lyrics and so, very often, we'd be working on three different songs at one time."

Reportedly Burt didn't like ArthurLee & Love's interpretation - calling it 'neurotic'. It was a further reduction of the ManfredMan version, I think from having heard it in the movie it's in - but not catching all the chords. Seems a little ironic to me as it is about obsessions & fairly 'neurotic' in itself... Then PinkFloyd's manager was trying to convey to them the chords in the Love version by just vocalizing them - & that's where the descending chords to 'Interstellar Overdrive' came from...
Avatar 9:49am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

↳ Yetz @9:35
In other words underscoring how intertwined they were.
Interesting to compare/contrast with Lennon-McCartney... I think TheBeatles worked very fast - also recording their own material of course. Sometimes eye to eye - especially early, but more often helping the other with what they'd present that wasn't completely finished I think...
