Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

My two cents of Tribute :
I've long said that one tends to think of the 1960s in terms of all the tumultuous Social Revolutions - & in fact I think it was characterized by this particular Blakean (I suppose) dynamic between Innocence & Experience &/or the transitions from one to another
...but ! I've noted one watches say Shindig! or some such old TV show from the mid1960s - & there's, say, the BYrdS - iconic Rawk artists with their rebellious vibes whom I completely idolize
...& then - Dionne Warwick comes on - singing Burt Bacharach songs ...& it's another world. A Grown Up among little boys, practically. Singing Grown Up Music - looking sophisticated & singing about Grown Up situations & emotions.
& tho I was only a toddler, barely in School when the 60s finished - this was set up in the Culture & persisted too - & this was our environment sonically & visually via media.
& of course being possessed by the Musics - one's mental & emotional investment in Masters of things like Songwriting such as Burt Bacharach's only deepens & expands.
So - how fortunate to have such early exposure - & to be born right into really no less than the Creative Renaissance that those Times were in Popular Culture. & - how strongly their expressions imprinted ...& really truthfully informed us emotionally - so astute & artful the constructions of a Burt Bacharach. Which is why this moment this Loss - but another in what it is clear will be an uninterrupted & long series of them - is as emotional for me as it is, tho one might not think it would be so for such a 'straight' or obscure un-RawkStar-like figure...

Burt's composing especially were technical masterpieces. He was a jazz fan and added the complicated time signatures and counterpoint to mainstream pop music. Though Dionne W's adept singing of those complex melodies, and the huge influence of Bacharach on The Carpenters (Karen was likewise a huge fan of Dave Brubeck, hear that in her drumming!), it was a subtle, technical revolution, but one that made pop melodies so much more complex and beautiful.

I looked into "Nottamun Town" after hearing an interesting "chill" electronic track that sampled/looped an old folk version of the chorus. It's the local way of saying "Nottingham" town, and it had a peasant rebellion/revolutionary subtext that immortalized it in the English folk canon.

Don't know how LC was himself about performing, if he had a bit of fright or just didn't prefer the limelight, but he was "drafted" successfully by Judy - and later at the Isle of Wight festival. The late night crowd was getting bad vibes, but were brought to a calm by Leonard, dragged out of bed in pajamas! Those "stoned and sleepy preambles" are some of his best live tracks!

Lipps Incing with Lipstique!

The frequency of ridiculous disco covers was apparently one factor that drove the masses against the genre.

Well, a seriously electronicaed R&B version(?) of "Walk on By" was blasting out of a minivan at my corner as we came back from buying pet food, so it seems the mourning is general.

Plus, we listen to any number of things now, when they aren't current and being overplayed throughout the media. Things can be listened to in their own right, not as an element of an amorphous trend. Two+ decades after release, we really see what's enduring and forget the things that weren't.

Hey Emilie! My recollection of disco sentience (and I was pretty wee!) is of Camaro bros cruising Camaro chicks in the suburban NJ park that subsequently closed the loop because of too much disco Camaro cruising (in Jordache, iirc?) to this day, no reentry into the park - THANKS DISCO

Disco had an arc (like maybe every single Movement Ever) - starting with Urban cultures of gays, persons of color & hard drug users & various other outsiders - ending up with 'Disco Duck' & nothing else on the radio or in venues for years - & in the small town I was in - yer Dad wanting to be John Travolta & the Jocks flying its flag in complete opposition to us stoner Rawkfans. @ the time - didn't have that perspective whatsoever.

Donna Summer (the Queen!) and brothers Tavares were among the best of Disco, and on board from the beginning. Having been around before disco, in the soul/funk/dance scenes, we know they can thrive independent of it as well.

Interesting on the anti-stoner anti-rawk view of some conformist alpha-dawgs of the time: remember commenter JakeGould? He had described his rock-loving Brighton Beach self and friends blaring Zeppelin to taunt the "disco-loving Bensonhurst" dudes! Mischief a la 70s!
