doctorjazz, the highlight of that compilation (and one of the highlights in the entirety of recorded sound) is "Yakhal' Inkomo" by Winston "Mankunku" Ngozi and his quartet. A tune dedicated to and memorializing the loss of Coltrane. The song title refers to "the bellow made by a bull just before it is sacrificed, and the mourning cries of its fellow cattle as they see it struck down."

I took my daughter to see Billy Harper (when she was a pre-teen at a long gone jazz club on Flatbush Avenue, Park Slope. Between sets she went up to tell him that she really enjoyed the set, he was very sweet to her, and started the next set looking at her/our table, and announced, "this next tune is for Poppa and Little Miss". She still remembers that (actually sent us a card months later, I had signed onto his mailing list).

Huey Long played in the same Earl Hines orchestra that boasted Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. As Dean mentions, he lived to the ripe young age of 105. More info here: www.venushairhouston.com...
  12:11pm
Dean:

From an obit:

"Fletcher Henderson hired Mr. Long to play with his orchestra at the Grand Terrace Cafe and later took him to New York, where the simmering bebop movement propelled Mr. Long into a new phase. He joined the pianist Earl Hines’s orchestra and performed with emerging stars like Billy Eckstine, Sarah Vaughan, Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie before forming his own trio and then taking a detour with the Ink Spots.

"After playing with the saxophonist Eddie (Lockjaw) Davis’s Be-Boppers, he formed a new trio of his own and entertained American troops in Korea and Japan as part of a U.S.O. tour."

Dean:

From a 2004 Houston Press profile:

"There's a Xeroxed black-and-white picture on the wall in [Huey Long]'s Heights retirement-home apartment that is simply astounding. On stage in the photo, there's a big band -- and what a big band it was. There's Long on guitar, seated in the back row. Standing in the front row at the other end of the band is Dizzy Gillespie on trumpet. Earl "Father" Hines is on the piano. Charlie Parker's on tenor sax. And singing is Sarah Vaughan. Now that's a supergroup....

"I went down on Main Street. I saw guys shining shoes, and I needed work. This fellow says to me, 'You can have this shine box,' so I shined shoes." Soon thereafter, Long caught a break as a banjoist in Frank Davis's Louisiana Jazz Band, Houston's hottest group at the time. Still, most of the jazz world back then was centered in Chicago, so Long moved there and found a gig at the 1933 World's Fair backing Texas Guinan at the "Century of Progress" exhibition. Since Long and band were posing as Cubans, he was forced to learn guitar. "We were playing Xavier Cugat rumbas," he recalls. "They told me, 'I'm gonna give you x days to lose that banjo, 'cause Cubans don't play banjo.'"

@Brian in UK poses an interesting question. Why DIDN’T Jac Holzman sign The Beefeaters for more than the sole single? My guess is that Elektra did not yet have the infrastructure to compete in the pop marketplace, and that Jim Dickson was looking for the kind of resources that a Columbia/CBS could provide. Seems plausible, anyway!
