'm probably reminded of Dave van Ronk's recording of "Cocaine Blues" largely due to the subject matter--but the chord structure, the finger-picking, the lo-fi, the little bit of talking blues--all of that is such a hallmark of van Ronk's Village sound (which Dylan very much borrowed from, at least per van Ronk).

@Alvy: I really dig DVR. I picked up some of his 60’s albums back as a young teen, probably because of my Dylan obsession, and just realized that I really need to grab his 80’s Back to Brooklyn album- it’s spectacular. His autobiography is a wonderful read as well. Supposedly, Dylan stole the harmonica holder look from Jesse Fuller, who wrote the song that I played Dave’s version of on my show.

cutting off artists is fine when their work no longer interests you. But it's foolish to cut them off at a particular point because others say they're no longer "cool" or "good" after that point. I missed out on a lot of great later-era releases by some great artists when i was younger because I was told not to bother.
