Rich, the first time I heard "Dirty Water" was the cover version by The Inmates in 1979. I didn't find out about the original by The Standells until many years later.

Btw, Secondhand Songs lists only 12 cover versions of "Dirty Water", with one instrumental version by Billy Larkin and The Delegates (released the same year as The Gants cover of it) and an adaptation in Dutch by De Kreuners.

Ironically "Eight Miles High" and "Try It" put The Byrds and The Standells off the Top 10 forevermore... thanks to the censors. Both were playing at the same time in early '65, The Byrds at Ciro's LeDisc and The Standells at P.J.'s where those groups were doing house band gigs
